Has anybody managed to track down the birth certificate of John Gerrard who was born in Paddington, Middlesex (circa 1860), and who's death certificate records his death in Chelsea as 6th November 1897 at the age of 37? Needless to say, I've browsed the Civil Registration Index but have been unable to find John's birth entry. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer me. Tony.

Hi Tony
Do you mean this John? If so his age on the census

I found this when I was looking for more information
John Gerrard
Age - 21
Born Saddington, Middlesex about 1858
Service Start Year - 1879
Regiment - A. W. Corps
Regimental Number - 4045
Attestation Paper -Yes
-
Thanks for the rapid reply crisane. Yes, that's the John I'm interested in. I've found him in several census entries, (but not the service record, thank you!). I've been specifically trying to get a copy of his birth certificate, but despite trawling through several years of the Birth Indexes have been unable to find a possible entry - hence my previous post.

Just found this on the GRO index
John Gerrard mmn Yeatman
1855 June 1/4 in Kensington vol 1a page 18
But this son appears to have died
John Gerrard
1856 March 1/4 Quarter in Kensington vol 1a page 10
All the other birth registrations are there, just not John's. Maybe for some reason they chose not to register his birth. It wasn't until 1874 that it became the parents' responsibility to register their children's births.
-
Thanks again crisane. I think I have come to the same conclusion as you, and will accept (for the time being...) that John's birth was not recorded. By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that the 1855 index entry is associated with 'Yeatman'?
-
Hi Tony
The GRO has a new index for births and deaths and the birth index gives the mother's maiden name. Makes it much easier to find the correct birth registration.
You have to register but it costs nothing.

Thanks crisane - I'd noticed that the format of the GRO website had changed, but hadn't realised that the search facilities had been changed - a massive improvement in my opinion.
-
Tony. What is your connection to this Gerrard Family. I was helping one of my cousins with this information.
-
Hi R Snelling. I have been researching my wife's family tree. Her maternal grandfather is Albert Henry Gerrard (1889-1966). Albert's father is the elusive John Gerrard - hence the interest in obtaining John's birth certificate.
-
Hi Tony. This is also my Cousins Gerrards Family. I can put you in touch with them if you so wish.
Regards
Roy

John Gerrard (b 22nd October 1815) is the brother of my husbands 3X great grandma Mary McCune, née Gerrard. Her husband Robert McCune was a witness at John and Janes wedding. According to their wedding certificate, his father is Richard Gerrard, his mother was Elizabeth, I believe her maiden name was Pullman. I’d be grateful if anyone has anymore info on the family. I’m going on holiday to Dorset in a weeks time and will be staying near Beaminster. I hope to visit the museum there, where I believe they have family history resources.

DMR. Can you contact me please. I have more information on the Gerrards. It looks like you are related to my cousin.
