I have a John SAUNDERS born 1819 Long Bredy
In the 1841 Census he was at Lyme Regis with his mother Joan SAUNDERS born about 1795 Long Bredy I believe.
He married an Elizabeth ????
Joan died abt 1874 Lyme Regis
Can anyone find him on later Census please
It would be most appreciated if some could assist me please

Thanks Groom
Much appreciated
I could well be as I have never found a marriage for John and Elizabeth. Finding him on the census may narrow do when he married and hopefully which area.

I think you might have to be careful, as there could be another family with similar names and ages.
In 1861 there is this family living in Lyme Regis RG9.1370/73/41
John Saunders head 41 Greenwich Pensioner Long Bredy
Elizabeth Saunders wife 35 Lace Maker Sidmouth
Sarah Saunders mother 68 Braider of twine Long Bredy
I dont think they are yours though.

Do you have access to Ancestry? There is a tree with this family on there, although they have attached the last census details I gave you to it. They have John's parents as Robert Saunders 1797 -1888 and Joan Hayes 1793 - 1874.
I thought this was wrong as Joan is described as a widow in 1851, however they have Robert as being imprisoned in 1820 and transported to Tasmania for 7 years in 1821. He stayed there, remarried and died there. It might be worth you contacting the owner of this tree as they seem to have it well sourced.

This looks a likely match;
Elizabeth HAM, born 1826, Sidmouth, Devon, Servant, living in Cheltenham, Glous in 1851
HO107/1973/682/27
Marriage Reg;
John SAUNDERS, Sept 1859, Axminster, 5b 39
Elizabeth Mary Snell HAM is on the page
+ Isaac WARR and Mary Ann RATTENBURY
(Followed Isaac in 1861 with Wife now a Mary Ann with her Children Georgina/Emily Rattenbury there)
So this John must have Married Elizabeth Ham

I'm puzzled by that 1861 census - right ages and birthplaces and I can't find another family on other censuses, but why would Joan be Sarah and John suddenly a Greenwich pensioner ??? Mind you I do have a Letty who appears as Sally one census so could be bad writing on the original household schedule, still leaves the Greenwich Pensioner bit though.

That's what threw me about the 1861 census, but it does now look as if it is the correct family, as it fits with the POB for Elizabeth in 1871. Strange about the change of occupation and name.
How exciting to have someone who was transported to Australia. The tree on Ancestry has Robert Saunders life in Australia well sourced.

Hi All,
The family tree on Ancestry you speak of is possibly mine. I am more than happy to be contacted by anyone else who is researching this family. My husband is a direct descendant of Robert Saunders who was transported to VDL.
