Title: Cornwall: Emanuel BLIGHT, born c1845
Post by: BAC3 on Thursday 19 July 12 22:02 BST (UK)
Hello,

Emanuel BLIGHT, born c1845, was in trouble 3 times with the law, 28/06/1859, 04/03/1860 and 03/07/1860, the latter of which saw him being sentenced to 4 years penal servitude at Bodmin Quarter Sessions.   He was held mostly at Parkhurst Prison and then transferred to Dartmoor Prison on 30/03/1864.

And that is as much about him that I have managed to research!!!

Can anyone help?

Thank you,

BAC3

Thanks Victor,

The Cornwall FHS require an open-ended research project to find Emanuel BLIGHT, which could prove expensive based on my own frustrated investigations.   Sadly, as he is only one of many I am researching for a PhD, mature Postgraduate, fixed income (!!), I may put him the pending tray.

For now,

Hi BAC3
Does this help you at all?
The Royal Cornwall Gazette, Falmouth Packet & General Advertiser - 1 July 1859

Emanuel Blight, 15, pleaded GUILTY of having broken into the dwelling house of William Rodda, at Crowan, on 6 May, and stolen the sum of 1s 8d, a watch chain, and a quantity of buttons, the property of the said William Rodda.

Thank You Osprey,

I had retrieved this entry earlier but discarded him as I though it referred to a Lieutenant Emanuel BLIGHT born in 1793.

Now I am having second thoughts......if he died in September1864 then he should not have been an inmate at Dartmoor Prison, as he was due for release on 02/07/1864.   Possibly he was hospitalised and retained for a long period.   Now the problem of course is how do I find the appropriate records for deaths in Dartmoor Prison??

Brickwalls!!!

Hello Dazey,

I scoured the whole of the 19th Century British Library Newspapers and came across two entries for him, the one you quote and an earlier publication on 01/07/1859.  At least the articles prove he was "real"
as I am so puzzled as to the absolute lack of detail for him.

You will note above the possible death in 1864, which I suppose is clutching at straws, but I will persevere down that particular track!!

For now,

just been having a look around and yes, the death does refer to the Lieutenant born in 1790. He's on the 1861 census and notices of his death are in the newspaper archive.

But where is the "incorrigible young rogue"? Not my phrase, but in the Royal Cornwall Gazette.

In 1851 there is a 5 year old 'Manuel' Blight living with his family in Cambourne (Redruth Reg Dist).
Honor age 37 Miner's widow'

I wonder if this might be your Emanuel?

If the family in 1851 are the correct family -- in 1841 they are living in Sithey -- father is William, a Tin Miner, age shown as 31. On this census the ages are supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years, but it doesn't look as though that was done in William's case.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the fossicking........he was born, admittedly 1846, in "Illogan", a stone's throw from Redruth in 1843 which the FreeBMD quotes.  So on the balance of probabilities one and the same person and with the parental details my Biography is now developing.

And whither the "incorrigible rogue" after 02/03/1864?    That remains the question!!

For now,

I don't know if this is your Emanuel Blight - but there are several articles in the Australian newspapers concerning someone of that name getting into all sorts of trouble!

See;
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q="emanuel+blight"&exactPhrase=&anyWords=&notWords=&l-textSearchScope=*ignore*|*ignore*&fromdd=01&from

This is from the 'Trove' site where Australian newspapers can be searched for free.

An Emmanuel Blight with a birth year of about 1843 - also died in Australia in Kooringa, South Australia in 1886.

Again I don't know if he is yours. I only searched a period of the newspapers --using a search term of "emanuel blight" in quotes. You may wish to extend your search and read the articles - just to see if there are any clues as to whether it is the same Emmanuel/Emanuel.

You just beat me to it with that, June!  He's buried in Burra Cemetery and in the neighbouring plot an Elizabeth Blight was buried.

His birth was registered at Redruth, rather than he was born there and the Redruth registration district included Illogan

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/redruth.html

I've had a look for his siblings as well and only John Henry is obvious in later census entries

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=burials&id=1641085

Sister Elizabeth Jane married in 1872 & the cert is on the opc site, so you could try contacting the person researching the family

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriage_certificate&id=603

Can't find her after her marriage either. It's possible that the siblings emigrated. The tin industry was declining at that time and many Cornish miners left for mining districts around the world. Australia would be quite a likely destination.

Oh - it's no problem - great minds..and all that  ;)  Poor Elizabeth died in the same year - whilst cleaning out her husband's hospital room!  I'm pretty sure it's him.  Think perhaps this calls for a query on the Australia board now!

Oh Wow! I assume Elizabeth's death was in the newspaper on Trove -- I didn't read all the articles. If it's the same Emanuel he has the distinction of gaining infamy on both sides of the world!

Hello June, Osprey and Dazey,

I am going to let you into a little secret.......Emanuel BLIGHT is one of the 4,000 juvenile offenders who entered Parkhurst Prison over the period 1838-1864.   I am a retired Postgraduate researching for a PhD on that subject and how successful the prison was in reforming these offenders.

2,000 or so of them were transported and so in my search for Emanuel BLIGHT I trailed through the transportation records with no luck and as transportation ended in 1868 anyway and Mr. BLIGHT had not re-offended, I did not think (THINK!!!) to research one of the best resources, namely TROVE, as there was no connection.    Oh dear, I now feel rather foolish.    But........how did he get there?   Some effort is now required researching whatever passenger lists I can find that directly relate to Cornish emigrants and, of course, Plymouth was a very popular spot for sailing to down under.

He was referred to as "incorrigible" in that newspaper report and if indeed he is the one in TROVE he seems to have carried on the trait!!

For now,

Tony

Hello everyone who has helped,

Progress Report:      It appears 43 year old Emanuel BLIGHT, father William, married Elizabeth BROFEY in South Australia in 1886.   Strangely, he died the same year!!     This information, courtesy of a message I put on RootsChat Australia, certainly looks extremely hopeful matching up the age and father.

Now the only brick remaining in the wall to knock down is to find out if, between 1864 and 1867 (at the latest), an Emanuel BLIGHT migrated to Australia from, say, Plymouth the most likely port.   Sadly, finding this information is difficult and just as much so apparently in South Australia for immigrant listings.   Incidentally, Emanuel BLIGHT, if it is the same one, carried on his incorrigible ways because he spent at least 13 years in prison down under!!!

Will keep you posted.

For now,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Excellent!

See 'Dazey's previous message though -- it looks as though she found an article in the Trove newspaper saying that Elizabeth also died that same year as Emanuel --- whilst cleaning out his hospital room. 'Dazey' also mentions that Elizabeth is buried in an adjacent grave.

makes a really interesting story.

I couldn't immediately find an immigration into Australia either -- maybe the Australian Roots Chatters can help with that.

Hello June,

There are now some doubts in my mind.................!!!

In 1882 The South Australian Advertiser reported on a case that involved "Elizabeth BLIGHT", four years before the marriage in 1886.
Was Elizabeth BROFEY calling herself by that name?   Curiouser and Curiouser.

Another interesting fact is that Emanuel and Elizabeth both died in Burra, a famous mining centre about 160 miles from Adelaide, which employed a very large number of miners from Cornwall in the mid-19th century.   Something to ponder on I suppose.

Take care,

Tony

Tony, just to make things even more confusing, there's another Elizabeth Blight, wife of William Blight, who died in Brompton Park (suburban Adelaide) in 1900 aged 70.

Here's the link to Tony's thread on the Australian board.

This could well be her death in South Australia.....

Eliza Jane KNEEBONE aged 41 and married of Wallaroo Mines died on 3rd May 1894 at Wallaroo Mines.
Husband  =  Thomas KNEEBONE
Ref = Dal  219/50

Wallaroo Mines is another Cornish mining place and not all that far from Burra.

Sorry.....wrong Thomas Kneebone and Eliza(beth) Jane Blight!    :-[

Good Morning Everyone,

Does the name CAMMER TACKNOTT mean anything geographically to Cornwall?

I have tried googling, and searching my atlas, but nothing.

Apparently Emanuel BLIGHT was a native of the place and if we can answer the question "YES" then almost certainly he migrated to Australia.   How?   As a fare-paying passenger that we have been unable to establish or he worked his passage!!

In anticipation,

Tony

Good Evening Fizzy,

You may have hit the nail on the head................Camborne Tucking Mill.
The village of Tuckingmill was part of the Parish of Illogan where Emanuel BLIGHT was born.

It is all beginning to dovetail very neatly.

Thank you, excellent suggestion.

Good Morning Everyone

Thank you for the tremendous effort in solving the "Mystery of Emanuel BLIGHT".

I think most questions have been answered very conclusively, leaving no doubt that that he was born in Cornwall and died in South Australia.  Of course how he arranged his passage down under will probably remain untold!!   There are, too, several imponderables about his 20 odd years in South Australia but they are of minor concern really.

The amount of information I have retrieved for him, with everyone's help, is considerable and will allow me over the next several days to create a very comprehensive Biography for him to add to my database.
I am delighted with the outcome.

Once again my thanks to you all, and although you will not be mentioned individually in the "Acknowledgements" in the Biography I hope you will agree the expression "Generosity of Subscribers to RootsChat" will be adequate.

For the moment, take care,

Tony
