I can only see a Thornhill on the maps for the area. Perhaps you could copy and paste a picture and this may throw a different light on the spelling.

Follow the link and look at the WHOLE page.

Hi Charles,
The map is the CRAWFORD SURVEY of DUMFRIESSHIRE of 1828.
DGFHS www.dgfhs.org.uk own an original copy.
It comprises four sheets, each approx the metric A1 size.
For safe keep and proper preservation, DGFHS have given it to the Ewart Library in Dumfries as a permanent loan.
DGFHS use clips from it to illustrate their MI and OPR publications.
Cheers,
Sy

The placename is Thorniethwaite. These days it is a farm and a couple of cottages - not very different from what is shown on your map.

The farm is at NY 06978000 and the cottages are at NY07158007

I used to fish the river there, if I remenber right the Lochmaben folk were Crown Tenants.

Hello everybody,
Thanks to all for the great contributions, now that I have established where "Thorniwhat" is I would like to keep this thread going.
You will all notice that I have re-named the Subject line from "Thorniwhat ? in Lochmaben" to "Bell / Taggart - Thorniethwaite, Lochmaben"
For many years now, I have hit many "Bell" brick walls for my g, g, g, grandfather Walter Bell (Annan), spouse Margaret Aitkin (Hutton and Corrie/Kirkpatrick-Fleming).
So, this search interest is a new and fresh outlook for another possible link to my "Bell" ancestors ::)
The facts for this new possibility are as such -
Lochmaben OPR film in the Ewart Library.
