Post by: DMGOING60 on Monday 23 July 12 18:11 BST (UK)
Hi,
Not sure if I am in the correct place but i have hit a wall in trying to research family on my own. This is what I have so far.
My Great Great Grandfather was Joseph Taylor Born about 1814 in Durham Sunderland. His wife was Mary Ann. One of his sons was William A Taylot born 1844 came to the US about 1865. I was trying to find out if he lived anyplace else in England prior to coming to the US. And also looking for more info if availanle on Joseph Taylor.

Thank you,

Hello Doreen and a very warm welcome to Rootschat  ;D.  Do you want to tell us what you know already about the family that you are looking for so that we do not duplicate anything that you already have.  How do you know that Joseph was born in c. 1814 in Durham and that he married Mary-Ann? Do you already have census details? or did you find this another way? Anything else that you can tell us will help us to help you (hopefully) ...  :)

Thank you for getting back to me. What I found below I pulled together by piece mail and very little "real" information from a couple of deceased relatative. Here is what I have working backwards from my father:
Juluis H Taylor US Citizen dob 194
His father born the the US George F Taylor dob est 1880, George's Father William A Taylor dob 1844/45 England. William's Father Joseph Taylor dob est 1814. The reason I am asuming SUnderland is on the only census report I could locate with a combo of the names William, Joseph and or Mary Ann.

Thank you for all the help!!

Hi and welcome
www.freebmd.org.uk is a good site for looking for births but you do really need to work back from what you know as fact.  Can you give us death and marriage details from the USA?   Any idea what the A is for in William A Taylor?  What was his occupation?   Who did he marry?  Do you have the certificate?  The more information you can give the easier it is to find the right family.  Taylor is a very common name in the Durham area so assuming Sunderland may be a complete red herring.

Came to the US about 1865
Married a Theresa (or Tracy) Mulkhern or Mulhern, not sure. Married in Massachusetts about 1885.

Thanks,
Doreen

Do you know the occupation of father Joseph - was he a mariner ?

What was William's occupation ?

I think the A for Abraham is an invention, it does not appear in the index of birth registrations.

There is this family on the 1851 census living in Sunderland. All are born in BishopsWearmouth except the wife who is born Northumberland. Note on this census Joseph is born about 1804

Joseph Taylor 47 - Mariner
Mary Taylor 42
Mary J Taylor 21
John Taylor    14
Margret Taylor 13
William Taylor 6
Elisabeth Taylor 8
Davison Taylor 10
Harriet E Taylor 1

Do the names Chapman or Davison mean anything - I think its possible Joseph maries twi ce both times to a Mary

Chapman sounds somewhat familiar. Not Davidson though. Does it show William Taylor always living in Sunderland before coming to the US?

Thanks for all this help!!

Same family in 1861 ?

Note Joseph has not aged., so now born 1814. All born Sunderland except wife born Hutton Henry, Durham

Joseph Taylor 47 - Mariner
Mary Ann Taylor 42
William Taylor19 - shipwright
Joseph Taylor      14
Robert Taylor 10
Mary A Taylor 8
James Taylor 5
George Taylor 3

If you do not have Williams marriage certificate I think you need to get that - I think I am right in saying US marriage certificates may have the mothers maiden name on it

on the census  1880,USA

it states Williams mother is Irish and his father English
does this tie in with the English census returns
he is married,a woolen mill worker, and has children
Ann Julia ,Martin,William and George born Conneticut

There are trees on Ancestry suggesting Joseph Taylor married Mary Ann Chapman on 18 March 1842 at Sunderland

So going by the ages of teh children on the 1851 census it does look like Joseph was married before. You could get a copy of the marriage certificate to see if this is so

Married a Theresa (or Tracy) Mulkhern or Mulhern, not sure. Married in Massachusetts about 1885.

This looks like their marriage, in 1869 in Rhode Island - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8KF-FVH

And this looks like George Taylor's marriage, listing William & Theresa as parents - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0pdw/

Also, in case it helps, a Dedham city directory stated that William died 8 Oct. 1918.  An obituary might give you some clues, such as where he was born or if he had any surviving siblings.  Sometimes, libraries will do look-ups for obituaries, so if you're out of the area, it might be worth a try to get in touch with the Dedham library.  There is contact information here - http://library.dedham-ma.gov/contact

Baptisms Sunderland:

Joseph Taylor baptised 7 Jul 1814 s/o Robert and Alice
Jane Taylor baptised 7 Jul 1814 d/o Robert and Alice, buried 12 Jul 1814, infant
Isabella Taylor baptised 7 Jul 1814 d/o Robert and Alice

Also buried the same day, so sad,  Alice Taylor, age 43, Union Lane

Robert Taylor first married Alice Bowser, she died, then married Alice Brown.  Nice--no mistakes calling your wife the wrong name!!

It looks like Robert and Alice (Bowser) had children before 1812 so you be in luck as those records give more information

Jane Taylor, born 28 APR 1803. baptised 31 Jul 1803, 2nd daur of Robert Taylor, Tailor, Native of this parish by his wife Alice Bowser, native of this parish

Elizabeth Taylor born 27 Oct 1799, baptised 15 Dec 1799 was daur number 1
