Title: John HOCKING 1869-1938
Post by: Eyesee on Sunday 12 August 12 00:53 BST (UK)
Not sure if he was from Cornwall, but as HOCKING appears to be a predominantly Cornish name, am putting him here to start with.

John Dillon HOCKING, according to his gravestone, was born 10 Sep 1869, and he died at Kiwitea in New Zealand on 30 Jun 1938. No birth of any HOCKINGs in New Zealand about this time so am turning to England.

Found a Mr  J D HOCKING, Gentleman, aged 25, leaving London on 4 Apr 1894 on the Rimutaka bound for New Zealand, which could be him.

Should have looked a bit further before posting.

Found him on Familysearch born in India, parents John and Caroline Amelia, although according to 1881 census some of his siblings were born Cornwall, as were his parents.

He is also on the 1891 census. His father was a clergyman and so he fits the description as a gentleman and is missing from later censuses.

There is a marriage of John Hocking, Clerk in Holy Orders, to Caroline Amelia Montgomery in Penzance on 26th December 1861
