Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help me? - I am researching my G Grandma, its a long story so far but I think I have found her on a passenger list (as a deported passenger) from Canada (Halifax) to Bristol on 29th January 1913. The last record of her before that was 1911 census when she was a servant in Wales.
I dont have access to Canadian passenger lists but would love to be able to find out when she travelled to Canada, which must have been sometime between Apr 1911 and Jan 1913 and also if she was travelling alone.
Her name was Martha Moss, born West Felton Shropshire in 1877 and she died 8th February 1913 in Bristol probably in the workhouse.
Please can anyone help me out with his?

Free index on link below shows she travelled 1911 from Bristol - Martha Moss b 1877 - Bristol - Quebec
You have to buy credits to view the entry for the full date

Cautionary note
I have just found an incoming entry for a Martha Moss b 1877 shown as housewife - plus 4 yr old daughter Ethel W
Returning to 32 Mount St Salford Lancs from Montreal/Quebec 25.6.1919
She may have been the 1911 outgoing entry as the 1913 incoming entry shows birthyear as 1879

Thanks Carole, I am pretty sure that the listing on the Royal Edward in January 1913 Canada to Bristol may be my G Grandma, even though the age is 2 years out.
The background is that she emigrated to Canada with husband Thomas Moss and Elsie May (my Grandma) as Barr Colonists in 1903. They settled, had two more children and for some reason returned in 1906 after they had acquired land, built a house etc. Then I dont know what happened because in the 1911 census Martha is a servant in Wales, all three children are living separately with relatives and Thomas had disappeared?? I discovered recently that Martha died Feb 8th 1913 and is buried in Middleton on the Hill, Herefordshire -I have been told that she died in Eastville Workhouse, Bristol.
I realise its possible that I may be way off the mark, but the fact that she died in Bristol makes me believe that she may have returned to Canada, became ill and that is why she was deported, I thought if I could find a record of her travelling out to Canada I would be able to perhaps confirm it.
Kind regards Moira

Hi
The Canadian passenger list has Miss Martha Moss age 26 single arriving Quebec on the Royal George June 1911. She was heading for Regina, Saskatchewan.

Hi
Some more information
The following Moss family arrived in St Johns, New Brunswick, Canada April 1903 on the Lake Manitoba

The 1906 Canadian Census for Saskatchewan has the following

It looks like the Moss family returned to England arriving Liverpool from Montreal (I think) on the Virginian 5th Oct 1906

Hi Moira
If you search the 1911 England census for Moss born Canada you will find the 2 boys in different households.
I'm a bit puzzled about the 1913 deportation of Martha Moss from Canada. As I said in an earlier post the Canadian passenger list has Miss Martha Moss age 26 single arriving Quebec on the Royal George June 1911. She was heading for Regina, Saskatchewan. The passenger list does have the word Deport but it is strange that the deportation seems to be 18 months later. I would have thought that if there was an issue on arrival the person would have been returned on the next ship,
Have you found Thomas is the 1911 Census?

Hi Andy
The two boys and my grandma were all living with different relative by 1911, I was contacted recently by the granddaughter of James and Grandson of William, who (strangely) were both researching the Thomas & Martha Moss mystery too, this brought the three branches of the family together for the first time since the three Moss children were all separated sometime between 1906-1911!
Martha would have been 34 in 1911 but it is true that she would have been heading for Saskatchewan. I have a copy of the passenger list that details her (I think) as a deported passenger in Jan 1913, on the SS Royal Edward. The reason I am thinking that this may be her is because she died within weeks of this arrival in Bristol in the workhouse there.
I have found no record of Thomas - except a possible sailing back to Canada in Nov 1906 and it looks like this too has a deportation notice on it - 'to be deported on arrival?' I have searched the 1911 census thoroughly and also Canadian records but to no avail. I would love to piece all this together and find out what happened to them! Thank you Andy
Kind regards Moira

Hi Moira
I would have a look at the outward passenger list for Martha Moss on the Royal George in 1911. I don't have access to it but on the free search she was 34. The outward passenger list, which is on Findmypast, might have more information.
If it was her then she could have been deported for making false statements, the passenger list says she hasn't been to Canada before.

Thanks Andy, I dont have access to these records either but I believe my local library does and I am going to have a look at them this afternoon. I will let you know how it goes and thanks very much for your help!

Hi Andy
After spending a couple of hours down at the library trawling through illegible passenger lists, I came away with no proof that the Martha who was deported in 1913 from Canada was my Great Grandmother. So I went for a walk down the canal in my village and still had a strong gut feeling that the deported passenger was Martha and that she probably sailed out on the same ship (the original records for that journey are so illegible I think they must have been written by the ships cat!!)
Anyway, when I got home I received a reply to an email I had sent a couple weeks ago to Bristol Records Office which contained details of Martha's admittance to Eastville workhouse (tried to copy it here but site wont let me) which confirms that she definately was the deported passenger on the SS Royal Edward, and died a couple weeks later in the workhouse. She must have been trying to get to Canada to find her husband Thomas, who she had named as next of kin (address unknown) Sad, sad story but good to know that my gut feeling was correct!!
Thank you for all your help Andy and Carole, much appreciated.
Kind regards, Moira

Hi all - just spotted this tread. I’m also trying to find out what happened to Thomas Moss. (He would be my great great grandfather, his son James my great grandfather).
The last evidence we have is the document transferring ownership of the land he farmed in Lloydminster to him in 1908. Possible he was alive then although the application for the land was made in 1906 and the final stamp given in 1908.
Any updates / thoughts on what could have happened would be fantastic.
You probably know Martha is buried at Middleton on the Hill, a memorial bench has recently been placed there for Philip James Moss, James’ eldest son who was also born there.

Hello Moira and Lucy, I hope you are both still active members on here having only just seen this thread.
I have also been searching into the Thomas & Martha story as they were my great great grandparents, their son William being my great grandfather. Who is also buried at Middleton on the Hill

Hello - I had an email notification showing your message on here. I’m afraid we have not discovered anything further. It’s amazing that we decedents are all trying to solve this mystery after the family were separated over 100 years ago… my mother Pat has probably been in touch with you/your family trying to piece it together too. We even went to Canada several years ago and stood on the plot of land they farmed and looked through archives for hours. Would dearly love to find out anything more about Thomas or Martha. Lucy

Hi Lucy, this is very interesting.
I'm unfamiliar with James's family line. Until reading your post I only knew of my great grandfather William and recently his sister Elsie. If you could provide some more information I'd appreciate it.
This is very interesting, I was told that they owned a saw mill in Canada, and that it was sold after finding no relations to Thomas?
I have information on Martha's residence during her childhood, along with her father and grand father. All living within a few miles of where I grew up.
On Thomas's line i have traced back to Edward Moss born 1756, living in Hatfield, Herefordshire

Hello Lucy,
Found this site by accident, saw the thread between you and other 'descendants of the Canada riddle' and thought I'd say hello. Firstly though, God this site is a bit confusing to use! So many adverts and pop-ups I nearly gave up. Anyway, I'm Richard Moss, my dad is Henry Moss, and my GF was William Henry Moss (born Lloydminster). I've done quite a bit over the years on the tree, (not as much as Moira who I gather is quite the detective) and I recently spoke via FB with Daniel (son of my first cousin) and I gather that he's on this thread too. Are you related to the 'Ledbury Moss's'? I did visit them about 15 years ago in Ledbury, but life moved on and I lost touch. Anyway, If you want to see my FT I'd be happy to send it to you if you'd like or I can just answer your questions. Look forward to hearing from you. Richard

Hi Richard, yes I am Pat Moss’s daughter - who I think you met a while ago in Ledbury at John’s house. We are decedents of James (your grandfathers brother).
Love to see your family tree, and we’d all love to solve the mystery or even just find out a little bit more!
For anyone on this thread my email address is merredylj@hotmail.com. I agree this website is truly awful - But will keep an eye on it for anything new!
Best Lucy

Thanks Lucy, Email sent along with FT attachment. Hopefully hotmail allows the attachment (as I know from experience that hotmail can be a bit fussy. Anyway, let me know that it's arrived.
Thanks again,
Richard
