William Henry Ellis Born 8 June 1868... He jumped ship in Geraldton when 14 years old and walked to Nannine. Married Margaret Amelia FEWSTER 11 Nov 1877.

In 1877 he would have been aged only 9 so either birthdate or marriage date must be wrong. If he was born 1868 then he would have been 14 in 1882.

Newspaper death notice makes him born c1864.

William Henry ELLIS married Margaret FEWSTER in 1899 in Nannine,Western Australia according to the Australia Marriage index.

Hi Nita,
WA BDM has been playing up for me   :( but now I  can find more directly

John Newell Ellis was born in 1902 in Nannine to William Henry and Margaret Amelia Fewster reg 3413

James Henry Murchison Ellis was born in 1900  in Porlell (?) to William Henry and Amelia Margaret Fewster reg 3011

Hazel Miriam Ellis was born in 1905 in Nannine to William Henry and Margaret Amelia Fewster reg 4085

There are a couple of possibilities for  birth of Kenneth - WA BDM do not include parents names after 1905.

Burial of John Newell Ellis died 3/10/1985 http://www2.mcb.wa.gov.au/NameSearch/details.php?id=KC00082222

I am trying to chase the link back from NZ as I have no idea what to do here. I did try and get details from NZ but the request paperwork was difficult from here. They would not transact via email as most places I have dealt with. I have no family or friends there to research for me. My tree basically comes to an end there. If it can be traced to the UK I can then obtain records to verify the family history. (common name not helping at all) So I thank everyone who has helped me in this search.

INFO ONLY on Nanine for interest.

The townsite of Nanine is located in the Murchison Goldfields region, 735 km north east of Perth and 30 km south south west of Meekatharra. Gold was discovered in the Nannine area in 1890, the area being rich with gold, and by 1891 was the site of feverish activity. In 1892 John Forrest, the Commissioner for Crown Lands decided to have lots surveyed and a town site declared, although Forrest referred to the place as "Annean", the name of a nearby pastoral station. When the local miners heard the auction of lots was to be in Perth 85 of them petitioned Forrest to have the auction in Geraldton. The lots were surveyed in 1892, and the town site named Nanine, as "it is situated 10 miles from Annean Station and 3 miles from Nanine Wells", and was also the name of the proposed electoral district and adjacent gold mining lease. The townsite was gazetted in April 1893. Nannine is an Aboriginal name, "Nanine Wells" being first recorded by a surveyor in 1889. The meaning of the name is not known.

Hi Nita,
You probably should remove the marriage cert (or a moderator will do so).

But some of the details like professions are important to help in the search, so include these in future requests.

I did look on NZ BDM for marriage of parents https://www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz/ without success.  I also looked on familysearch where there are a few possibilities but nothing obvious.

Perhaps we should ask the moderator to move to NZ board? ?

regards,
   Ros
(adding thank you -I hadn't heard of Nannine before   :-[)

Hi Nita,
In my first post I did ask if you were wanting to go further back and you replied that you couldn't go forward.  That is why I gave you info (as well as I could with WA BDM being shakey ) about descendants.
However it seems you did want to go further back to ancestors in NZ and UK.

It is exciting that you have ordered war service record - they are so fascinating with photos and family letters.  Well worth the money.

I am hoping that some NZ gurus will come on board but I guess I have filled a couple of pages with info that you already knew  :( and that makes it harder for others to plough through.

So I guess another hint for future requests is to make clear whether you want to go back further and find out more about the ancestors, or to go forwards and find out more about the descendants.

All the best with your research

regards,
   Ros

I have applied for Birth record for William thank you, I have also applied for service records for Kenneth. I am hoping both of these will lead me back to the next line of ancestors you have assisted so much. The NZ BDM is great works well.
Are yes also I will be clearer but I didn't know how much I could unwind. What you have done though is help me to stay straight with correct information also with how to get records. I am still hoping others will assist as they see a flaw or a link in my chain of events
You have also helped with direction on what to post. New nothing of a hotel  and only know of Marys death through others
Nanine does not exist any more I have been able to get the odd photo from archives.

I have a possible birth place of Leith Scotland for Mary Ann nee Thomas so with the death notice of age 37 I might have a further run with this.

As we currently have it  :) :) :) :) :) ;D ;D

The NZ site https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/ says they will e-mail printouts to you (new service).

Hi Nita,
didn't the marriage cert say that John Ellis was a publican? (or did I confuse the 2)

I was hoping to find an obit to John with lots of background but haven't done so yet.  Any idea when he died?

If no-one else comes along then  I suggest that you post on the NZ board focussing on the NZ aspects.  Something like ...
John ELLIS and Mary Ann ELLIS (nee Thomas)
Mary Ann Ellis died 10 Aug 1880 at Arahua
They had a child William Henry Ellis in 1868 in Greymouth NZ (who lived and died in Australia).
    John Ellis was a publican.
Looking for any information about their arrival, marriage, children.  John was believed to have been born in Cornwall c 1832 and Mary Ann Thomas was from Leith in Scotland.

cheers,
   Ros
