Title: Peggram 1831-1905 Completed Thanks
Post by: Lady Di on Monday 29 October 12 00:58 GMT (UK)
Hi Folks,

I have a Frederic(k) Cole Peggram born in Hertfordshire 1831 to Thomas & Maria.
He appears to have died in Parramatta area in 1905. I don't have the death cert or place of burial.
Strange to have his full birth details, death date and nothing in between  ???

Apart from a couple of mentions in Trove in the 1850's where he's in the Penrith (NSW) area and a Missing Persons newspaper notice in 1876 there appears to be very few references to him in Oz.

Ancestry has an arrival of a William Peggram on the Saxon on the 29June 1849-age 18. Could this be Fred. and it's been mistranscribed?

Any sightings of this gentleman would be most welcome - please and thanks  ;D

Cheers

Di

Hi,

May 30th 1854 South Australian Gazette has a long list of unclaimed letters being held at the GPO and a F. C. Peggram is on the list.

Maybe in 1854 he was in SA, had been in SA or the letter senders had thought he was going to be there.

Regards
Gerry

NSW Police Gazette 14th November 1859 puts Frederick Cole Peggram at Warrington, South Creek.  He gets a mention because one of his horses was stolen on 10th November 1859.

January 1856 list for unclaimed letters at the Melbourne GPO has listed F. C. Peggram.

October 1851 list for unclaimed letters at the Melbourne GPO has listed Wm Peggram of Deep Creek.

Thanks for all the sightings Gerry
It looks like the William Peggram mentioned in Vic was probably the same guy who arrived in 1849. Just a coincidence with the age I guess even though this surname is unusual.

I did find that Frederick was mentioned in 1858 on the Penrith City Council website:
"Publican's General Licence; James Landers; Frederick Cole Peggram of Werrington and John Morrison of St Mary's (his sureties); Annual Licencing Meeting held at Penrith - Odd Fellows Arms at St Mary's"

Someone obviously knew a bit about him as his parent's names were correct on his death.

I can't find a marriage or any children for him but as he appears to be all over the country - SA, Vic, NSW - who knows what he was up to of where he went  ???

Thanks for your help

Hi Di,

On August 8th 1853 the Albion arrived in Adelaide from Gravesend and there were 3 cases on board for a Peggram.

He was on an adventure like many were especially with the stories about the gold rush.

Possibly, expect his Surname to be spelt as Pegram or Peggrim etc.

Gerry.

Yes, I suspect that you're right Gerry - just a young lad looking for adventure.

I think the only answers will be found on his death cert so that's possibly the best way to go when time/money permits.

Thanks for your help

Much appreciated

PAPERS PAST
Late March, early April 1876 in NZ West Coast Times, there is Charles C Medcalf, of 4 Spring St Sydney, looking for F C Peggram,of Buntingford,  news from England.

Targetted newspaper/area of NZ, so hardly just accounting for possibility that he might be in NZ?

NSW BDM
730/1893 Charles C MEDCALF    Sydney
parents Thomas and Stephanae A

SMH 24 May 1893
death Charles Cole MEDCALF  of Church St Ashfield 46yrs.

The Cole name suggests he might be a relative.

Great sleuthing there Wivenhoe  ;D  Just knew that Rootschatters were the best in the business  ;)

Yes you're quite right. They are related. I knew this but I wasn't aware that THEY knew it as the Cole name connection was back quite a few generations.

The "missing persons" newspaper articles were what lead me on this merry chase because obviously Charles looking for Frederick was one big coincidence or they actually knew of each other, even if they hadn't actually met. Would love to know more about who knew what/who back then but that's not about to happen.

Cheers

Di

There was a similar advertisement placed in the Melbourne Argus on 19th Feb 1876.

Just for interest.

There was a Coroners inquest into the death of Charles C Medcalf, he was accidently knocked over on 23rd May 1893 by a horse attached to cab No 13 driven by Sydney Miller.  He died at the Sydney Hospital that same day.

A Thomas Peggram of Chelsing Farm, Parish of Bengeo, Hertford appears on the England Probate Calender 22md May 1875 having died 1st April 1875.   It is likely that Thomas was Frederick's father and they were trying to find him.

Thanks Gerry - I have the coronor's reports but hadn't looked for Frederick's brother's death.

Thomas snr (FCP's father) died in 1854 so the Probate you've found is for Fred's brother (a widower) so it's possible that FCP was mentioned in his will.

Thanks for making that possible date connection. Certainly makes a bit more sense now.

NSW Gazettes show that there were outstanding letters at the Sydney GPO for FC Peggram or Pegram as follows.

April 1868, F.C. Peggram.
May 1871, F. C. Peggram, Burrangong NSW.
Aug 1876, F.C. Pegramm, Obley, NSW.
Apr 1878, F. C. Pegram
May 1879, F.C.Peggram.

Looks like has on the move during that period.

Oh blimey this guy did get around  ::)

Sure looks like he was gold hunting though

Thanks for those Gerry. Gets more interesting by the day. Think I'll have to bite the bullet and see who registered his death or at least where he's buried. Can't say I'm expecting a headstone though as I don't think he found the mother lode!!

Thanks again

Updating ...

I've received Frederick's death cert.

Unmarried, 49 yrs in NSW +3 yrs in other states (unknown areas)
Therefore he arrived abt 1853.

Buried Rookwood

Have also found that he had an uncle and cousins in Sydney & Bathurst so possibly explains what he was doing "out west".

Cheers
