This is probably his birth but before I spend more of my cash can anyone find this man in 1881/1891 please.

1911 Joseph Fitzgerald b Birkenhead aged 40
1901 Joseph Fitzgerald b Mold aged 27
Marriages Sep 1894 Civil marriage in Buckey Chester Register Office
Crofts Catherine / Fitzgerald John Joseph
Witness. Walter Crofts and Nellie McKenna
I had to buy the certificate as it was a Civil Marriage, no father named for John Joseph. ???

Have you checked freebmd and CheshireBMD for female Fitzgerald marriages between 1872-1881 in Cheshire?
If he was illegit and his mother married pre-1881 - he may be under her married name in the 1881 census
Doubt he is the 1901 b Mold if the 1872 birth is his as Birkenhead RD did not include Mold

IMHO, the 1901 and 1911 families are the same! ;D
Father, mother and 2 children all the same names
Living in Buckley on both censuses.
1901 census says all born in Mold Parish,
1911 census says all born Buckley, except father born Birkenhead.

Yes 1901 and 1911 are most definately the same family, but he is using the name of Joseph, marriage cert confirms him as John Joseph.
I have Crofts back in Flintshire for many years, but am stuck with Fitzgerald.

Thanks, problem is - he is born Crewe, mother Elizabeth widow 36 is born Monmouth.

John is described as a boarder - no evidence that the Elizabeth, another boarder, is his mother - could be any relation, or none at all (though unlikely)
But why is a mother (or whatever) called Elizabeth and born Monmouth a problem? I didn't think we knew his mothers name, or have I missed something?
Not saying this IS him, but not sure it an be ruled out, especially with the lack of other cotenders!

I can`t access the original image , only free transcripts on Anc, that`s why I said Crewe was the problem, not his mother Elizabeth, yes - she could have been from anywhere.
FindMyPast has the same birthplaces.
Could you post the image so I can take a look ???
Agreed, at the moment I don`t have any names at all , except for Nellie ( Ellen?) McKenna , a witness at him marriage.
It would help if I cound find him in 1891, but it`s looking as if another £10 will have to come out of the kitty :(

Have rechecked Cheshire BMD, and apart from John Joseph b 1872 Birkenhead , there is only this other one between 1870 /1875.

Thats a good find, as it does appear to rule out the one I found in 1881.

The other awkward thing is that by 1901 and 1911 he was using his middle name of Joseph.
There`s a slight chance this may be `Nellie` the witness, she is in the right area as the Crofts were from there also.
No marriage found between McKenna and Crofts ( just a thought)

In both 1871 and 1851 her father is a bookbinder, but where are they in 1961.
