Hello
My distant cousin, Ethel Jane Roberts married Arthur Hurleston, Birkenhead 28th May 1901. After then I cannot find them anywhere but I have found a Son, Arthur Edward Hurleston, born Birkenhead 1902 in the Family Search site as follows:-
Arrival Niagra Falls, New York date of 4th Dec 1930 of an Arthur E Hurleston with father Arthur bn abt 1912, Birkenhead Manifests of Alien Arrivals at Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Rochester, New York, 1902-1954 (Family Search).
Arthur E Hurleston age 18yrs arriving Niagara Falls 1920, New York. Manifests of Passengers Arriving in the St. Albans, VT, District through Canadian Pacific and Atlantic Ports, 1895-1954
I have not seen these manifests at all bit I wonder if they might give any clues to the whereabouts of Arthur and Ethel Jane and if perhaps they emigrated to the United States. I haven't found them on Findmypast as leaving the UK.
Any thoughts or ideas as to what happened to Ethel Jane and Arthur would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Bob

Hi
I am Sandra's friend in Canada and I have found a bit of info and will give you some sites that you can followup on.
It appears that possibly 2 brothers or at least relatives came to Welland Ontario within a few years of each other, Alfred and John Henry.
http://automatedgenealogy.com
you can look at transcribed as well as original documents
has
1911/Ontario/Welland/Pelham
Hurliston, Alfred, b. 1877, age 34
Hurliston, Ethel, b. 1875, age 35
Hurliston, Arthur, b. June 1902, age 8
all are listed as Methodist
immigration is 1907
The child that Sandra found born 26 June 1909, Welland, doesn't show up on the census so must assume that the baby died. I haven't been able to find a death though.
The other family in Welland is
Herlston, Henry
Herlston, Elizabeth
Herlston, Margaret
Herlston, Emily
all born England
Herlston, Anne, b. Ontario
went to Family Search to look for birth of Annie
Annie Hurleston
1 December 1906, Welland, Ontario
father - Henry Hurlestan, mother - Elizabeth Weston
Went to Ancestry to see what I could find and there are family trees showing Annie and also John Henry Hurleston. If you can contact the owner of the tree, you may find more information.
Must admit, I searched through a lot of information and I did find a marriage for Annie so I will go back and see if I can find it again. I found it beofre I made a definite connection between the 2 families.
Went to Free BMD
marriages for
John Henry Hurleston
Elizabeth Weston

Alfred Hurleston
Ethel Jane Roberts

Lincoln and Welland are not that far from each other and are close to Niagara Falls and the border to the USA. Port Colborne, Ontario is also not far from this area. When you do a search on the online telephone directory for Canada, the closest name I could come up with is Hurlston.
There is A. Hurlston in Port Colborne that you may want to contact to see if info can be provided.
www.canada411.ca
The libraries in Welland and Lincoln may also be able to give you some assistance. They will have access to newspapers and you can use the last date for the voters list as a starting point to look for an obituary. The libraries almost always have an "Ask A Librarian" section or at least a contact us section. They will have access to newspapers, old telephone driectories, etc. that could help in your search.
www.welland.library.on.ca
www.lincoln.library.on.ca
I did check military records, OCFA burial information, Legion Last Post, etc and didn't come up with anything.
I will keep looking for information.

Just to make sure that I am tracking the correct family, can you confirm the following if you know the info.
Robert Hurlston
Martha Humphreys
married December qtr 1871, Whitchurch Sh, vol 6a, page 1476
daughter
Annie, b. 1872
m. Thomas Harding, Dec qtr 1898, Whitchurch S, Vol 6a page 1421
d. Henderson, North Carolina, USA
Thomas Hurleston Harding
b. Sept qtr 1899, Whitchurch, vol 6a, page 737
I didn't look for the births of the rest of the children but this family is in Pelham, Welland, Ontario in the 1911 census along with her brothers Alfred and John Henry.
1911/Ontario/Welland/19 Pelham/page 9
Thomas Harding, head, b. 1872, England
Annie, wife, b. 1872, England
Thomas, son, b. 1900, England
Reginald, son, b. 1903, England
Jessie, daughter, b. 1905, England
Nellie, daughter, b. 1907, Ontario
Franklyn, son, b. 1909, Ontario
This family immigrated in 1905 and Thomas is a farmer at Lot 9, Concession 9.
There are family trees that follows the Hardings and Hurlestons on ancestry.

It looks like Martha Hurleston, Alfred's mother, also came to Welland, Ontario.
I found a marriage for her 29 Oct 1912 in Welland, Ontario to a Samuel Brereton. They are both age 64.
Martha Brereton died 27 Dec 1921, age 73, Welland, Ontario.
Her parents are Ben Humphreys and Mary Broom.
I think your best bet is to concentrate on the addresses from the census and voters lists and concentrate on the Welland area of Ontario.
I think you are going to have to rely on newspaper clippings for obituaries, announcements, etc.
Contacting the libraries is going to be your best bet. Every thing that I have found leads to the Welland area of Ontario.
Good luck in your search. If I think of anywhere else to search, I will post it here.

Good work Sandra on finding the info on the children of John Henry.
I would contact the library in Welland and ask for an obituary look up for John Henry to see if there is mention of his sibling Alfred or nephew Arthur. The obituary could state if they are alive or predeceased him. Some also state the address of living relatives. That could get you closer to the info that you seek.

That link to the ask the librarian at Welland Library in reply 8 from Val will probably come up with loads of info.
The last sighting of Alfred seemed to be 1957 and Arthur 1968, presume Ethel may have died before 1957 ???
John Henry's daughter Emily.
Just came across a census in Cleveland. Ohio showing Emily under Hurlston at the Grace Hospital, West 14 th Street Cleveland Ohio. Last address in 1935 was Willard think that means Welland. Ontario.
Emily Hurlston 36 Born England 1904. Single. AL. Nurse.

Hello Sandra and Val
Many, many thanks for all your hard work, I have only just had the chance to check my posts (Thursday, 15.55) so I will work my way through all your postings and get back to you both personally.
Many thanks, I was reasonably sure that the family had moved to either the USA or Canada.

Hi Val
Bob again. Just to confirm your earlier question re parents of Arthur Hurleston. Yes they were Robert & Martha.
My main line of descent is through the Roberts name with Ethel Jane my 2nd cousin twice removed.
Bob
-
I wanted to make sure that Martha and Robert were the parents of Alfred as I was finding more information on John Henry and his family than on Alfred and Ethel. Now that we know they all went to Welland, it should be easier to find them. John Henry had only daughters so the Hurlston in Port Colborne could be a descendant of Alfred and Ethel. It isn't a common name in Canada. I would definitely send off a letter by post asking for information. You may get lucky and that person be a descendant.
www.canada411.ca
just put in surname Hurleston and it will bring up that or any alternative spelling of the name.
Val

The Welland Library has a genelogy database that you can search for surnames. I put in surname Hurleston and 3 results.
One for marriage of Anne Irene, one for marriage of Martha and the death for Arthur.
Hurleston, Arthur
Welland
Welland Tribune, page B7, 16/02/1996
If you contact the library they should be able to do a lookup and give you his obituaryThe other option is to contact the Welland Tribune and have them to a search in their archives.

HI Bob,
Just noticed an old message board post (2002) about the Bown families - about the 9th post on the link below.
John Henry Hurleston had a daughter Ann who married Charles Roy Bown in Welland in 1928 and I believe the poster could have been there daughter which would give another lead to investigate.

Wow, I have been doing research as my grandmother was Margaret Hurleston and Aunt Em was my great aunt and Anne was my great aunt also. My mother was Margaret Miele as Margaret married Charles Miele. I was wondering what cousin is looking for this information and are we related. My own email is (*). Thanks so much. Vicki Nielsen
