Have you tried contacting Aberdeen City Library? If you look at the "Link to Aberdeenshire Resources" board, you'll find the contact details for the Local Studies Department. The staff are very helpful. They can search the Press & Journal for you.
good Luck in your search,
flst

Raggyroo,  I have lived in Aberdeen since the early 50's. I can not recall any tunnel collapse. Can you give us more information.

Do you have the death certificate? Also it would make it easier to look for information if we knew the name of the person involved.

If it was an accident at work there would have been some sort of investigation, which should have generated records, though I am not sure where such records would be.

So you have an exact date of death then? Your initial post just said around December 1977. The death certificate will probably have a Corrected Entry that will tell you what sort of investigation there was into the death (assuming it was accidental, which seems fairly obvious) and where and which sort of court it was in, which is what you need to access the records.

I've checked the Scotsman archive, and there's no mention there of Norman Petrie.

I did wonder if it might have been the collapse of the Zoology Building at Aberdeen University, as workmen were killed then, but it happened in 1966.  The library should be able to help with newspaper articles.

There is no death of a Norman Petrie in the SP index for 1966. There is one in 1977, and one in 1979.

You need to get the information from the death certificate.

For the '77 death, the age is recorded as 48.
