Hi grumper,

Can you tell us where in Wiltshire he was born?  It would help narrow down the search in the 1851 Census transcript.  Any idea of his father's profession?

Grumper,

This could be your family, but the details don't quite match the dates you gave, while the names do.

HO107/1849/fo 243? pg 19  Anstey
schedule 67

MACEY JAMES 36 Former Farmer Teffont Magna
Eliza Wife 37 Widow/er Donhead St. Mary
George 5m Ansty, Wilts.

This is from a transcript so I cannot check any details for accuracy.  No other family members in the household.  Checked the VRI but no baptism information available for these three parishes.  Must say I am puzzled how Eliza can be both wife and Widow/er at the same time!

Hi there, read your message and found the name Topp quite interesting. My Mills family from Mere Wiltshire includes an Elizabeth Topp marrying Samuel Mills in 1838 in Mere.
I believe that she may have been residing in Gillingham before that.
Not sure if she is connected to you or not.
Regards
Karen

Hi Grumper,
Have you contacted RobertS on this board, he is searching the Sparey family, but he has connections with the Macey Family as I have spoken to him before.

In a transcription of the 1851 census I've seen, Nell, the wife is shown as follows
HO107/1849/243/067 - Ansty

Eliza Macey, WI, M, 27, Farmer's Labourer, WIL Donhead St. Mary

The rest is the same.

In the 1881 census there are only 2 George Maceys born between 1843 and 1845 in Wiltshire...........
The first born and living in Chilmark is married but his wife's name is Emma.
The second, also born Chilmark, is unmarried and living in Middlesex.

The IGI however shows a baptism for a George Macey 11 Jun 1844 at Fisherton Delamere, Wiltshire, mother Eliza Macey.   No mention of a father.   However Fisherton Delamere is in the same neck of the woods as both Teffont Magna and Donhead St. Mary.

Cheers Dave
