Post by: knight456 on Sunday 09 December 12 00:29 GMT (UK)
im looking for information about my 2nd great grandfather john hitchings.
he was born in angle pembrook, but lived in swansea.my great gran violet may hitchings born 1898 married john brinley price and on the parish record it says that her father was also called john a tin ware manufacturer in 1924.her address was 38 park st swansea when she married.ive got her on 1901 census with her grandparents john and jane living at 5 portland st swansea.a search on the cambrian index says that a john hitchins died 1906 at portland st,buried in cockett.
violet lived in pontardulais after she married but when my gran was young she died at the age of 34.my aunt says that she was taken back to die in 38 park st.does anyone know if that property was a house or not?
where would a tin ware manufacturer have worked then?

Hello  :)

Violet May is listed as Granddaughter of John and Jane Hitchings on 1901 census, at 5 Portland Street. John is listed as a tinplate manufacturer, and both John and Jane were 62 years old. Perhaps Violet May thought of her Grandfather as her Father if he brought her up.

J Hitchings was still a tenant at 38 Park Street in 1914, according to the 1914 Swansea Directory. He may have been running his tinware manufacture business from here, but is not stated in the directory as such. Some other addresses in the street are listed as businesses, e.g. tailor, W Evans & Son Grocers, Stables, etc.

If John was manufacturing tinware, products could have been things like saucepans and  cooking utensils. If he was manufacturing tinplate, that would have been the raw material but I doubt he would be doing this "at Home" as described in 1901 census.

Kind Regards
Morgan

You're Welcome!

Do you have Violet May's birth certificate?

I suspect that this may be her family on 1901 census, but that would confirm it.

3 Princess Street

John Hitchings Head age 28 Tinplate Worker
Mary Hitchings Wife age 26
George Hitchings Son age    4
Elizabeth Hitchings Dau age 1
