I have located a marriage and viewed the entry on Scotlands People but it just gives the date and names of the couple. If i order the extract (£12) will that give me any more information such as ages and parents names or is it just a copy of what i am looking at??
Many thanks :)

Hi and welcome :)
As you are having to order the cert, I assume that it's within the past 75 years. If so, it should give info on occupations, addresses, ages, parents, etc., as all 1855 and later certs do.

If you look under "About Our Records" on SP there are examples that can be viewed.
-
The image you download is a copy of the £12 official extract so definitely dont order that.

Would be good if gingernutter confirmed the date of the marriage as, mentioned by Brevitas, it is not clear. Subject to dates it could be an entry from the Old Parish Registers (pre1855), or one post the start of official registration from 1855 and downloadable on SP, currently up to 1936. Post this year, all marriage certs need to be ordered as they cannot be viewed online.
Gingernut, I think from what you say, you are looking at the index results page? It is this that shows bride and groom's names.

Hi Ginger and welcome to Rootschat,
How about putting the year and the names you are looking for and some people
might be able to look it up for you without you spending £12.

Just need some care if the names are relatively recent as these mustn't be posted on the main forum (a good time to use the PM system).
We can't really advice further until we get some indication from gingernutter as to timings of events :-\

Thank you for a warm welcome and for all your responses.
JSHC is right, the extract is from the OPR's sorry i didn't make that clear by not putting any dates! I guess i was hoping for more information about their parents. The marriage took place on 1st March 1813.
James Williamson was born c.1793 in Moniaive and his wife Margaret Kerr c.1791. I am not sure when they died either! So back to the drawing board..i will have to try and locate them in the census to try and narrow down a few possible years of death or if I can find a memorial inscription...! :D

With some luck they lived past 1855 (and the start of official registration in Scotland) and you can pick up their trail through death certs which would/should include their parents' names :)
Unfortunately, as you have found, Old Parish Register entries are a bit of hit and miss affair :-\ Sometimes you are lucky and they include a little more info, most times not and they are no more than a single line entry with no more than bride and groom names and marriage/banns date. However, you don't know what will be included until you look (lucky dip comes to mind ::)).

One entry from 1841 that might fit, although children's ages a few years out...Everyone born in the county:
Margaret Williamson 50
Richard Williamson 13
John Williamson 11
Charles Williamson 9
Address: English Street, Dumfries
By co-incidence, cupcake has a post running on English Street here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,629568.0.html

Wow!!! Thank you Monica...! I have the marriage so the banns information is new thank you. The children i have, and i looked at the 1841 census for English Street but the ages put me off a bit but i guess they weren't always accurate and i will have another look at this info. Also i will have a look at the link by cupcake.
Why didn't i join this forum earlier! It was recommended by some one and they were right - it is full of very knowledgeable and helpful people :)

Which of their children are you following? I could only see Richard b. 1830 on the 1851 census with an Annan birth place.

I am following Charles Williamson born on 14th and baptised on 23rd December 1825 who is my Great great grandfather and married Margaret Murray in 1862 in Liverpool. I have ordered their marriage certificate to confirm dates and names etc. I am a bit wary as Charles would have been about 37yrs old then so possibly it was their second marriage???
-
If not a second marriage, then certainly a late marriage given ages?:
You will have this I am sure, but just for background here:
Charles Williams 45 Joiner b. Scotland
Margret Williams 43 b. Scotland
Peter Williams 8
John Williams 5
Margret Williams 3
James Williamson 1
Andrew Murray 24 boarder b. Scotland

Yes..you just imagine that everyone was married in their early 20's but maybe they were just waiting for the 'right one'. Had a moment of panic over that census..it rung a bell but couldn't find my copy..then found it..that's the problem with using multiple sites..or more likely its my lack of organisation... :-\
