Title: Southend Address - Where is/was it?
Post by: DavidJP on Monday 31 December 12 21:24 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

Hope someone can help with this.

On my Gt Gt Grandfather's will of 28th Sept 1921, one of the witnesses (his wife's sister) gives her address as: Aire House, Southend On Sea, her name being Mary Ann Louise Floyd. I have been unable to find this address, can anybody help?

Both Mary Ann Louise Floyd & her husband Charles Floyd died in the June quarter of 1927. Charles first aged 81 & then Mary Ann Louise very shortly after aged 64. What newspapers would have covered the area at that time as it would be interesting to see if there are any obituaries/articles concerning their deaths?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi,

Mary's entry in the Probate Calendar gives her address as 38 Prittlewell Street, Southend-on-Sea;  perhaps that is also Aire House?   :-\

Maybe you could Google Street Map it, perhaps the house name is still on it.

Just looking at the 1901 for Charles-it DOES look like it was on Prittlewell St. But I think the name might be Acre House? (He was born in Castle Acre...).

Hi Nanny jan, MaureeninNY & Debsydo46,

Many thanks for you replies, greatly appreciated.

Nanny jan, thanks for the address detail, although i'd found the probate record, not having any memberships i hadn't got the full probate detail. Must get down the local library & do so! ;D

debsydo46, thanks for the suggestion, but already tried that with no success, however with the Prittlewell Street address i shall have another go!

MaureeninNY, thanks for that suggestion, although i was already aware of the Castle Acre connection, i hadn't thought of that, so thank you very much.

Just a note though, the will itself is very clear & definately says Aire House, however i shall checkout your suggestions!

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi all,

I can now confirm that 38, Prittlewell Street & Aire/Acre House would definately appear to be one & the same.

Charles Floyd is at 38, Prittlewell Street in 1911, before they married. Both probates in 1927 give the same address at death as 38 Prittlewell Street.

As far as i can tell, the building no longer exists.

Many thanks indeed for all your help!

Kind regards

David
