my great grand uncle Arthur William Purchall born 1873 in Edmonton, England immigrated to New Zealand in 1874 with his parents before marrying Martha Anne Wallace in 1900. I believe they had several children in New Zealand. Hoping someone can help with a link to this lost family.
-
Hi Katlady
Are you wanting to make contact with PURCHALL descendants ?
> Or are you needing details of the children (there appears to have been 8 or so born to the couple, up to 1912).

Hello there,
Would love to eventually find and make contact with living relatives but at this point I need to pin down my Great Grand Uncle's descendants and find out what happened to him and his family and their families and so on. Have rough birth dates for his children but that is all, no idea what happened to any of them. As it has been 100 years since they were born I am sure there must be some record of them somewhere .
This is what I have :
Arthur Frederick born 1900 Invercargill
Martha Amelia born circa 1901
John Wallace born circa 1902
James Edward born circa 1904 Colac Bay, died 1905 Colac Bay
Dorothy Honora born circa 1905
Robina Jane born circa 1907
Jessie Helen born 1909
Isabella Helen born 1911

Robina Jane died 20/09/1907 age 4 months and buried in Terrace End Cemetery, Palmerston North.

From a quick look at the Electoral Rolls, Arthur and Martha moved from Wallace (1905/1906) to Palmerston North (1911 and 1914) and then to Auckland (1928 onwards).
James Edward also died young. BDM 1905/6199 age 10 months.
Isabelle Helen (or Ellen) appears to have married a Caine (or Caine). Her death BDM 2007/8656 as Isabelle Ellen Caine with DOB 27 April 1912. Can't spot a marriage though.

Hi katlady
NZ Marriage
Dorothy Honoria* PURCHALL - John William FITZGERALD -- 1928
[* Note spelling of 2nd christian name "Honoria" (rather than 'Honora'). "Honoria" is used on marriage record / electoral roll entries and death record. ]

You can also find records (Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland) > see link in Reply # 5 > for
Dorothy Honoria FITZGERALD - d. 1997 - aged 91 years
and her husband John William FITGERALD (d. 1973 - aged 69).
NZ BDM - Death

Unfortunately we are not permitted to publish in threads here, details of NZ Marriages which occurred after "today's date", 1933 ... and three of the PURCHALL daughters wed after that date.
Will endeavour though to find further information for them. :)

Again (at Waitakere Cemetery), there is a cremation record for >
Isabelle Ellen CAINE - d. 31 March 2007 - aged 94 years
[Will need to check further for her husband - can't see a cemetery record for him. ]

The main death notice for Isabelle has been put in the paper by her neices and nephews so she may not have had children, there is no mention of a husband either.I will PM the notice to you

Isabelle Ellen CAINE - widow, appeared on the Auckland Central Supplementary Electoral roll of 1946 - resident at 25 Napier Street.
Prior to that date, the only entry was "Isabel [sic] CAINE - married - 25 Napier Street" (Auckland West Roll) but no husband at that address.

Hello,
The death notice for Robina Jane (shown as Rubina Jane) appeared in the 'Manawatu Standard' on 19.9.1907.
Date of death shown as 18.9.1907.

... oops ... (hit the send button prematurely ;D) ... continuing >
Arthur William / Martha Ann / and John PURCHALL are all still listed at Napier Street, up to 1954.

John (John Wallace) PURCHALL later appears on Auckland rolls (@ Mt. Albert).
Sharing the same address with him (from 1963) is "Frances Alys PURCHALL - married".
I cannot see a marriage for John up to 1956, so it probably occurred after that date.

Hi Katlady,
Acting on a hunch I have found Isabelle's husband. He was Frank Caine, Senior Third Engineer Officer on the S.S. Vancouver Island of the Canadian Merchant Navy, which was sunk by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic on 15 October 1941. Frank was then age 40 and recorded as Husband of Isabelle Ellen Caine, of Auckland City, New Zealand. You can find his memorial on the CWGC web site by searching here:

Another sad war story.

Is there any chance anyone has any ideas on how to find out the death details of Arthur William's mother Jane Purchall nee Summers who remarried to Alexander Hendrickson in 1883 in New Zealand. Have been discovering a bit about her in another chat forum trying to pin down her parentage. She was born in Bethnal Green, England in 1846 but there seems to be some dispute regarding her father. Hoping if I can determine where and when she died I can apply for copy of certificate to get an answer, hopefully. More details are in topic 'Robert and Eleanor Tormey m 1871.

I can't see a death for either Jane or Alexander Hendrickson,or a marriage for the daughter,Rose Henrietta ,maybe the family left NZ

Yes, Jane Purchall nee Summers was my gg grandmother

Hi,
it pays to order a printout rather than a cert. a printout is cheaper and is a scanned image of the original record, prevents any transcription errors and usually has more info,

Cheers. :)
The 1889 Jane HENDRICKSEN death - aged 41 years (bc 1848) is a good match for Jane PURCHALL (m. HENRICKSON) - aged 35 in 1883 (bc 1848) ... so have to be hopeful. ;)

Yes, Jane Purchall nee Summers was my gg grandmother
Hi ... I was just curious really about what happened to Jane's other son because there are so few records for that surname in New Zealand. Often too, by finding where children were residing, we can get a better idea of where to look for "missing" parents ... and the like.
Is your line from her son James PURCHALL ?
:)
-
I'm guessing that you have probably already found the other PURCHALL deaths at the Dunedin Cemeteries database ?
A William Charles PURCHALL birth was registered in 1875 to Jane and James PURCHALL.
There is an error on the cemetery record which shows his death in 1875 "aged 7 years". It should in fact have read - aged 7 months.
* Death of a stillborn baby PURCHALL on 6 May 1876
* Death of Walter Henry PURCHALL

Yeś i had thought that there was an error with william charles death record seeíng as family hadnt been in new zealand that long. I am descended from Arthur's brother James and up till now have had very little info on all his sblings. Have just started with Arthur because he was only one i have any info on. Hope to trace the others soon. Unfortunately i have already ordered certificate foe janes marriage. I had thought the more expensive option would give more info. Will try printout in the future.

Hi katlady
re: DEATH - at NZ BDM (online)
1889 / 4940
HENDRICKSEN - Jane - 41 years
Have now checked the NZ microfiche Death Index at the Library and can confirm that the above death was registered at Dunedin (4th quarter of year).
[Date of Death (- deduced from online index) was -- 24 November 1889 ]

Hello Lu,
Many thanks for following that up for me. Should I now apply for copy of death cert. to verify that this is definitely my Jane or do you believe this is really her.
Katlady
-
Hi katlady
That's okay ... keen to help you solve your myster(ies). ;)
Entirely up to you, but were it me, I think I'd purchase the death printout. I'd want to know for sure. ;D
This is the only death I can see for a Jane - with a name similar to HENRICKSON. [And others here also checked the NZ Burial Locator to no avail. Often informants to a death don't get the spelling of names strictly correct.] There doesn't appear to have been a third marriage for Jane, either.
But as Jane re-married at Dunedin ... and her little girl died there in 1888, I think there is a better than good chance that Jane remained there also. ;)
~ Lu
-
... meant to mention also that I did check the Dunedin Cemeteries database for Jane's burial (but found nothing.) [It's possible to do a wildcard search on that site - e.g. HEN* and other variations --- you might like to have a look, just in case I missed it. ;D ]
[I can only think that she might have been buried in a church cemetery ?]

Hello to all,
Have just been handed a big shock, checking through the papers my mother has on family history I discovered some information from a family tree done by a distant cousin some twenty years ago. It lists Jane Hendricksen/Purchall nee Summers as being buried at Southern Cemetery Dunedin. I havnt been able to find any record of this. The papers also throw a loop into my family details but stirs up the mystery about the Tormey family connection. It states that Jane's father married a Mary Connolls and had Jane Anne Summers circa 1848 at Middlesex. Robert Tormey, Jane's supposed sister, has the parents Dominick Tormey and Mary Connolly who married in 1849.
Oh well, hopefully certificates I order shed some light on this, but will have to check out this new information.
Katlady
-
Update on this saga
Jane's marriage certificate states that her mother was born Mary Connoll and was at that time Mary Summers. No evidence has been found of her marriage to Jane's father prior to Mary's marriage to Dominick Tormey in late 1849.
Can anyone check to see if there is record of Mary's death in New Zealand circa 1896 please

Hi Katlady
Sorry, can't find anything in the New Zealand Death Index (for any year) for Mary [TORMEY var. / SUMMERS ? / CONNOLL (or CONNALLY as per spelling at her 1849 marriage). ]
> Why is the c. 1896 date significant ?

-
Hi again
Isn't the following, the record of Mary's death ?
FREE BMD
DEATHS - DEC - 1869
TORMEY - Mary
45 years
Reg'd. Islington
[Ancestry has : DEATH : Mary TORMEY - October 1869 - 45 years - bc 1824 - Reg'd. at Islington]
-
... and you probably already have the re-marriage of Dominick TORMEY - aged 45 - widower - occ. plasterer - Father: Robert ... January 1871 at Shoreditch, to Elizabeth MULGRAVE.
-
Thanks for those bits of information.
I would say that the Mary Tormey that died in 1869 in Islington is the correct one. I dont think my relative was correct about Mary dying in New Zealand. As Dominick also remarried in 1871 makes me think first wife died previously.
Many thanks to Lucy2 for clearing that up.
Now I have to work out how Mary Connoll/y appeared in James Summers life and where she came from, wonder also if there were more children from this union.

You're quite right that Isabelle was married to the a Canadian serviceman - Frank Caine. She was known as 'Babe' (till she died she was known as Aunty Babe), Dorothy was known as Dora and raised my father after his mother Jessie died in 1946. John married much later in life and had no children of his own, tho he was stepfather to the daughter of his wife. I've never heard mention of a Betty Purchall tho...

Aunty Babe had no children and never remarried after the death of her Canadian husband. She lived in a state house in the (now very gentrified) suburb of Westmere, in a house that backed onto Western Springs speedway/concert venue. SHe had more cats than I could ever count and was a sweetest 'great aunt' (tho her house in my childhood had a strong aroma of cat pee).
