Title: James & Elizabeth Foulis' children
Post by: blamcca on Friday 18 January 13 06:24 GMT (UK)
I am currently trying to write a story on James and Elizabeth (Betsy) FOULIS of Deerness, Orkney and their children. Elizabeth's maiden name was CRAIGIE.

They had the following children- George (1832), Elizabeth (1835), Mary (1837), Jane/Jean (1839), John (1841), James (c. 1846), Sarah (c. 1848), William (c. 1851). They possibly had more but I can't find any others. I would like to know where they lived, who they married, what children they had and when they died

If anyone can help I would be very appreciative.

Hi ,

Looking at online trees(not sure how accurate they are  :-\ ) George Foulis goes to South Australia and marries Rosa Rix in Adelaide in 1865.

http://www.genealogysa.org.au/resources/online-databases.html

5 possible children -
George Foulis b. 1867
Elizabeth Caroline Foulis b. 1869
Harriet Foulis b. 1872
Ella May Foulis b. 1876
Charles Henry Foulis b. 1879

You could try the Trove website for further information , it doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Thanks everyone, I didn't expect people to do so much.
I should've mentioned for people not to worry about George, James, Sarah and William. They all went to South Australia, and I have plenty of information on them.
All this is really interesting.
Can anyone find who was living at Noutland over all the censuses I have seen, 1841, 1851 and 1881. It was sometimes called Nutland.

This isn't quite right. William HOURIE would've been 62 not 22.

Also no one seemed to find anything on John FOULIS, can anyone? He died before 1876 from what I could find

Thanks for this guys.
I have just found Scotlands People and got some credits. I found Betsy (the mother) died in 1869. Yet I can't find when James (the father) died. He was in the 1851 census but I don't think he was in the 1861 census. However that leaves the gap before civil registration so there may be no records.

So that is Elizabeth Foulis who married David Ritch. What a small world it is. Her brother James is my 3rd great-grandfather so you would be something like my 4th cousin, once removed. Yes I use familysearch but I find it a bit limited with what records it has sometimes.
Do you know anything of Elizabeth's and James' parents, James and Elizabeth (Betsy)? I have a copy of Betsy's death certificate also of John Foulis, who died aged 24, the son of James and Betsy.

Hi, Blake

Actually, I mis-typed - David Ritch is my 2nd great grandather and he married Elizabeth Foulis on July 27, 1865.  Unfortunately, I don't have any more information about Elizabeth Foulis Ritch and James Foulis' parents (Elizabeth and James), but I have an ancestry.ca membership so I will have a look and get back to you if I can find any census records for them.
I was recently in Orkney and my cousin took me to see the Covenanter's Memorial in Deerness. During a family holiday in Orkney Fiona Sutherland (1968-) paid a visit to the memorial as it was partly built by her husband's (John Sutherland, my cousin) Great-Great Grandfather David Ritch (1843-1923). David was born in Deerness and was a mason by trade. At the time the memorial was built he was farming at Daisybank (28 acres- 10 arable). Daisybank is the ruined house on the left hand side of the track on the walk down to the memorial and is the house nearest the memorial. He died at Kitchen of Brecks in June 1923.
Have a look at http://www.robertwhitton.eu   Robert has a lot of valuable information about the Ritch line.

If I find anything about James and Elizabeth Foulis.

Take care,
L.

Hello
A friend found this thread, and passed it on to me, as it might be interesting.

I grew up in Deerness, near a farm my Dad grew up on. (now known as Horraquoy)

I saw the name William, which I know was my grandfathers first name, (also my dads middle name) and wondered if it may run further back in the family.

Hi,
It is entirely possible that our lines do meet up at some point. May have to go back quite a few generations to figure the connection out though. If there is one to be found.

I am the great *3 grand daughter of Stewart Fouls (female). Her parents were Anne Reid and Olipher Fouls of Papa Westray. Stewart married George Burgar who I think came from Westray. They had 3 children, Margaret was my great*2 grandmother. Stewart died just after the 1841 Census. George remarried to Ann Rendall in 1842.They had two sons George and Thomas. They migrated to South Australia in 1854 on the "Joseph Rowan".
Is there a link to James and Elizabeth?
I am very interested to find out more about Stewart, George and  Ann's families and the link between Westray and Papa Westray and in particular Stewart Fouls (why name a girl Stewart?). Her sister's name is Ann Stewart, and the name is passed down for generations (Son Stewart Foulis Dent, Grand daughter Stewartine). If there is a link to James and Elizabeth who also came to SA this may fill some gaps in the jigsaw for me. Interestingly Stewart and George's son was William Rendall Burgar so there is a Rendall link also.

Hi, I found your post the other day when I was researching my Foulis side of the family. Stewart Foulis is my Great x4 Grandmother. I also am descended from her daughter Margaret Dent nee Burgar.

Stewart Burgar nee Foulis was born to Olipher Foulis and Ann Reid in 1807. Stewart is an unusual name for a girl, but we found out that Stewart was a twin. Her brother was called Stewart but he died after being born. We think the parents maybe conferred his name onto their daughter.

We aren’t sure why the name Stewart was passed on for generations, but our Nana (Stewart Burgar’s Great x2 Grandaughter) told us that her mother, Margaret’s Great Granddaughter, told her that their family was descended from Sir Patrick Stewart of Orkney. (Not a nice connection, I know :)) Apparently, that’s why back through the family, the name Stewart is used quite often. As for William Rendall Burgar, that might be because (now this is Very far back!) Stewart’s father’s Great Grandfather married an Ursula Rendall.

My Mother and Sister did a lot of the research a few years back; since I have taken it up, I’ve researched Olipher’s paternal side to around 1690 and his maternal side to around 1756. On Ann’s side, I’ve researched her maternal side to around 1720 and her paternal side to around 1680.

George Burgar was born around the same time in Westray/Papa Westray (1807). (Westray and Papa Westray were so close that they were both put on the records.) His parents were Andrew Burgar b, 1773 and Margaret Miller b. around 1776. George had six siblings: (ones I can find anyhow), Benjamin b. 1800, Elizabeth b. 1802, William b. 1805, Henry b. 1810, James b. 1815, and Mary b. 1819. George’s paternal grandparents were, William Burgar b. 1754 and Jacobina Setter b. 1756. William’s parents were David Burgar  and Marion Harcus. Jacobina’s parents were Wiliam Setter and Barbara Hughson. They all lived in the Orkney Isles.

If you would like any more info, just reply!

God Bless.

Hi Heapsof us
Thanks for your reply.
Just wondering which child of Margaret and Agen Dent you are descended from?
I have a lot of this data on my website I think and also, thanks to various sources, much from earlier. I did notice there were two Stewart Foulis baptisms. Were you able to confirm thetwins story?
I have a possible link to the Stewarts but it requires documented evidence. However, I think it would be fair to conclude that most of the Orkney population is descended from the Earls. Where you able to obtain confirmation of the connection?
