Hi,
This is my first time out of England, please be gentle with me! ;D
I am helping a friend with her research and we are trying to find a birth/baptism of Ann Chalk and any more information too.
We can not find her birth or baptism but have been told it was in Porteynon, Glamorgan.
Apparently her mother died when she was born and she is mentioned in the 1851 Census living as a niece with the Beynons.
I have found her marriage to William Davies on 13-1-1861 by banns in Porteynon.
On the 1861 they were lodging possibly with his family (going by the surname!)
We've been told they had first child 1862. Although the 1871 census only shows a William & Ann but, by then, they were supposed to have had 5 children and eventually 10!
Any help would be most appreciated, we'd really like to know her fathers name if possible too
Thank you in anticipation
Wendy

do you have a copy of the 1861 marriage to see who she says is her father?
The Chalk families in Port Eynon in 1841 are still there in 1851, no missing wives. There's a burial in Port Eynon of Mary Chalk in 1842, but too old to be her mother.

Thank you for your reply Osprey :)
No we haven't purchased her marriage certificate.....yet! That's probably the way forward!
It's a bit of a mystery this one, hopefully we will get to a conclusion one day! ;)
Thank you for your help :)

think your next step should be the cert to see if there is a father on there, but it could be that she was the illegitimate child of one of the Chalk daughters and the death in childbirth story a cover-up.
Baptisms for the parish up to 1837 have been transcribed for FreeReg, as have marriages, burials transcribed start in 1838.
The male Chalks seem to have a fair few mariners among them. This webiste should help for more details

This parish map from Genuki may help you know where things fit in

Could just do with a walk along the beach there this afternoon to get rid of the cobwebs!

Ann wife 29 b. Porteynon
Mary A dau 9 b. Sketty
Elizabeth J dau 4 dau b. Sketty
Morgan son 2 b. Sketty
1881 Church, Mumbles, Oystermouth RG11/5367 folio 90 pg 8
William Davis head mar 38 fisherman b. Llangennith

Thank you! Obviously I was! my search didn't pull up Davis, and her married name was Davies, I hadn't banked on the enumerator to get it wrong!! :D
-
same pronunciation, so not that wrong. You should check for variants. The name can turn up as David and Davids as well. I'd be more concerned with the enumeration in 1861 where William is shown as a weaver. It's an odd change from that to oyster dredger!
::)

I do and I did! The funny thing is the site I use does not come up with the record even using the reference you gave me for the 1871 census.
-
that will be because I can't read my own writing! should be be 5460. Many apologies!

Lovely! got both census now thank you :)

Oh! I didn't know my request had been completed? ???
I would still like to find her birth and any other indormation any body has please :(
-
think you'll need to ask a mod to move it back. Or post again when you have her marriage cert with a link to this post.

OK thanks I'll see what my friend want's to do first! ;)
