My great uncle, James Cooper, born 22/09/1871 in Waterloo, Liverpool, emigrated to Canada aboard the Aurania which left Liverpool on 06/03/1926. With him was his wife, Agnes, and 11 year old child, Jean. I think the ship was bound for Halifax.
Could somebody please give me a few guidelines how to find what happened to the family after they arrived? (I have not done any research in Canada before.)
Many thanks, Matahui.

Thank you. The site lay-out has changed since I last used it and I am finding it extremely confusing. Matahui

Hi Matahui,
James was a returning Canadian on the Aurania Passenger List in 1926. Jean was 11 years old and born in Canada. They were returning to Winnipeg Manitoba.
Here they are together at 538 College Street. Winnipeg Centre Manitoba on the 1916 census :-
James Cooper 42 Born England. Immigrated 19x4. (not clear) Plumber.
Agnes Cooper 39 Born England. Immigrated 1912
Jean Cooper 3 Born Manitoba.
Sandra
-
Canada Voters List shows the Cooper family in 1935 - 538 College Winnipeg Manitoba.
James Cooper (Plumber) Mrs James Cooper (Housewife and Miss Jean Cooper (Stenographer)
Sandra
-
If that immigration date for James was 1904 then he was a boarder with the Salmer family in 1911 - 442 Baunatyne Winnipeg City. Manitoba. Occupation:- Plummer. Immigrated 1904 - Birth a year out - Septe 1870.
Sandra
-
Think James used to enter Canada via the USA. Certainly found the family crossing the border that way in 1926.
New York Passenger List - James Cooper - born about 1871 and aged 33 years - single - occupation:- Plummer. Travelling Liverpool to New York on the Campania 19th March 1904. In transit to Winnipeg.
Sandra
-
James crosses the border from Canada to the USA James Cooper born 1871 - aged 35 years - Plummer. Arrival Date Dec 1906 Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Sandra
-
On the border crossing 20 Jan 1926 - Agnes says she was born in Bolton and arrived in Montreal on the Tunisian in June 1912.
There was an Agnes Cooper on the Tunisian, June 1912 but her age is recorded as 22 years. Going to husband in Winnipeg Manitoba - plummer.
That seems to fit with a marriage for an Agnes J Dodd to a James Cooper - West Derby 8b 559 - Q1 March 1912.

Wow!! Thank you so much, Sandra. You HAVE been working hard for me. It all sounds so positive until your last post. My James was married 05/03/1912 to Agnes Anderson McBride in West Derby, L'pool. She was a spinster aged 38. I cannot find her or James on 1911 English census. On 1901 English census Agnes is with her family in L'pool and it says she was born in L'pool. I cannot find James on 1911 census, which would tie in with him already being in Canada.
I do think I have the correct marriage certificate because of:- 1) James' age, 2) his address 3) Father's name and occupation 4) witness is his youngest brother 5) Agnes' witness is her cousin who was living with her family on 1901 census.
The address given on 1926 shipping record is the same as the Cooper family home.
-
I suppose I should try for Jean's birth certificate. Would that give mother's maiden name like the English ones?...and an address?....that could tie in with what you have found for me??
Did you use Ancestry to find border crossings? I got the shipping records from Find My Past, but I know Ancestry has some now too.
You've given me heaps of info' ...thanks sooo much.
Matahui

Hi,
Yes, I see 2 Agnes's married in March 1912 - yours was the other one.
There is a 100 year rule on births in Canada so Jean's birth should be coming up on records shortly I presume. The birth certificate should give the information you want.
Regards
Sandra

One little bit of info -- in 1911 you will find Agnes at Anc'y as Agnes Bride living with her father in the same place as they were in 1901. The "Mc" in her father's surname has been transcribed as initial "W".

I have now found James on 1911 Canadian census and 1935 voter lists as previously suggested. I have also found Agnes Anderson McBride at Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg, died 2.29.1948 and a possibility for James there, died 2.20.1949. Does anybody know how to find if there's a headstone, please? Are death certificates available? Also, can I find if daughter, Jean Cooper, married? She was still single in 1935 when she'd be about 22 yrs. Thanks, Matahui

Unfortunately you are just outside the limits for online access to those records:
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
The deaths didn't appear on searches because the cutoff date is 70 years ago (1943), and you won't find any marriage because the cutoff date for marriages is 80 years ago (1933).
You can order the death certificates:
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/HowToApply.html
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Entitled.html
The "Query" page above says:
"If you wish to obtain a certified copy of the original record for genealogical purposes based on a search you have done, the fee for each record is $12.00. No refunds or replacement of documents will be given for copies of the records issued based on your search. If you wish Vital Statistics to perform the search on your behalf, the regular fee of $25.00 will apply."

Many thanks. I'll leave certificates for the moment, I think. Matahui

I believe I have found an obituary for Jean. It looks like she re-married after the death of her husband as her surname was Clark in the obituary. Here is a link to it at the Free Press website:

I've found an obituary for Jean's son as well from 2001. It appears he was divorced as there is no mention of his wife. Here's the link:
