Michael Connolly was transported to N.S.W.from Ireland in 1829 for highway robbery. He was trialed in Dublin City on the 5th. November 1828 with his brother in-law Patrick Dodd. Michael was sent to Norfolk Island, what I am trying to find out is why was he sent there.

Many thanks,

Sometimes the Norfolk Island Museum can be helpful with little snippets of some convicts. Could be worth dropping them a email and seeing if they have anything on your fella.

Michael's ticket of leave dated 27 Jan 1847 states that he was tried at the Supreme Court, Sydney on 18 Feb 1832 and sentenced to 21 years at Norfolk Island.

There was a Michael CONNELL arriving on the 1827 voyage of the Guildford  :) as per NSW SRO

Re the burial index for a Michael CONNELL, aged 52....  perhaps that would be for the chap mentioned in the following two cuttings from Trove ?  The reference is not for a death certificate, as civil registrations for deaths did not commence in NSW until 1856.

Unfortunately, none of these are my Michael Connolly, for which I am greatful for your help. Michael arrived per "Guildford" in 1829 and died Macleay River NSW 1844. During the 1830's sometime he was sent to Norfolk Island and my question is to why and what for?

Any help most appreciated.

IF this is your Michael then he must have gone to Norfolk in or after 1834. As posted on a previous post i would drop the Norfolk Museum a email.

Thanks Muss

The problem is there are too many Michael Connolly's . My Michael came on the Guildford in 1829.  I feel the first two Michaels on the "Free Settler or Felon" site is my Michael.

The last two mentioned came on the Guildford in 1827.

My Michael died in the Macleay River 1n 1844 and the first two names I feel are one of the same with the location of Newcastle and Port Stephens it seems to fit with his death location.

Thank you once again.

Well this is very interesting particularly for a Port Stephens Resident of some years, but the main is something on the trial of your Michael Donnolly.

The extracts are related in letters 566 and 566A

I can't find anything on the Trial but it seems your Michael was a BUSHRANGER.
See below from a letter dated 2nd January 1832.
Letter No. 551
Port Stephens
2nd January 1832
The Resident Magistrate
Maitland
Sir,
I have the Honor to acquaint you that the Prisoner of the
Crown whose description is herewith enclosed has lately been seen
at large as a Bushranger on the Estate of the A. A. Co. – in whose
service he was, ’till sentenced to an Iron Gang in August last for
Robbery.
A Man calling himself William Elder, Manlius, who was his
Companion has been apprehended and sent to Sydney, Hames
escaped, and it is supposed, has proceeded in the direction of
William’s River.
By Elder’s account, they both absconded from a Road Gang
near Old Wiseman’s – and their intention was, to have committed
certain robberies here, and to have escaped on one of the Company’s
Boats.
Description was enclosed and a copy of the above, with
Description was also sent to the Resident Magistrate at Newcastle.
Letter No. 552
Port Stephens
7th January 1832

Sir Edward Parry begs to acquaint Mr Singleton that finding

Hi Neil,
How interesting for it appears he may have continued his life of crime in NSW for he was tried in Dublin in 1828 with his brother-in-law Patrick Dodd and committed for life for highway robbbery.

I think I will need to go to Kingswood to seek the Norfolk Island connection to see if I can marry it up with what you have found.

Many thanks Neil.

Debra would that be the right ticket of leave if Michael died in 1844  :-\

The ticket of leave states that this Michael was tried at Dublin 5 November 1828, sentenced to Life, arrived on the Guidford '8' in 1829, and died on 5 July 1847 at Green's (?) Creek Station.

None of this on Michael is adding up  ???

According to this Michael died in 1844 and also according to Pam he died then.

Connelly    Michael
Guildford  (1829)    1828
Dublin City    Life
Birth year 1804
Wicklow Co
Death 1844 Macleay River District
Remarks Ploughman shearer Norfolk Island

According to the info Debra found Michael died .... he ticket of leave states that this Michael was tried at Dublin 5 November 1828, sentenced to Life, arrived on the Guidford '8' in 1829, and died on 5 July 1847 at Green's (?) Creek Station.

THEN we have

he Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (NSW : 1803 - 1842)
Saturday 31 May 1834
BATHURST.
Thomas Finnerty, free, holding a Ticket of Leave, to be Constable, from the 11th instant, in the room of Michael Connolly, per Guildford, holding a Ticket of Leave, dismissed for neglect of duty.

And then what Neil found dated 1832.

All these state Michael Connolly per Guildford 1829.

The inquest register gives 'natural causes' as a cause of death, inquest held at MacLeay River on 24 July 1847, and notes he died on 15 July.

Well I think Michael Connolly is a very common name and I think you may find many trips of the Guilford. 2 + 2 more than one Michael on the Guilford sometime prior to 1832. Sentence to Norfolk was just for what the authorities at the time called, "the incorrigible" and it was like a death sentence. I am surprised he returned to die in Macleay Area. Was he still a prisoner when he died?

Obviously this is not going to be an easy one working out just who was who. ::)

Neil ???

MODIFIED....Gees I always forget something.... A sentence of life on Norfolk really me4ant never to be released and those offenders if not dead already were transferred to Hobart. So very doubtful if the one in Macleay region is right one also 8)

I am like all of you, totally confused, but thank you all so much for your input.
All I know is Michael Connolly arrived on the Guilford (8) in 1829 with his brother in law Patrick Dodd, they were convicted of highway robbery and tried in Dublin in 1828 receiving a life sentence.

Many thanks,

Pam...Sydney :) :)

Several  lots of bits and pieces, Pam,

May I please ask how certain are you that your chap sentenced to NI as a direct consequence of the Dublin trial?

Also, have you checked out the following chap?

Michl CONNELLY, ex the Guildford (9), date of burial :  Dec 1848, in the Port Macquarie district.   “remarks” on the NSW SRO convict death register read : “ Vide Letter dated 16 Feb 1849, No. 726”
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=65

Patrick DODD, ex the 1829 arrival of Guildford, received TL in 1838.  No. 709.  This was in the Goulburn district of NSW.   He had been tried in Dublin.

Possibly the same chap BUT that’s JM speculating …. Patrick DODD, ex the 8th voyage of the Guildford was recommended for a Conditional Pardon in 1845 (recommended by WP Faithful and W H House, both JPs).

Patrick DODD, ex Guildford 1829, received a Conditional Pardon (2C) on 1 July 1846.  Ref No. 46/376

Hi JM,

Many thanks for your help, I think what I will do next is to take myself to Kingswood and have a look at the reels, they may give me some more information and then I will be able to make a decision on my gt.gt. grandmother's brother.

Thank you again,

I have not been to Kingswood Records but it may be worth a call there first to see if those records need to be brought out. I think if only to speed up the process. Many have been there and could probably advise better including JM. ;)

I am sure it will be worthwhile and getting the differerences between all the Michaels on all of the trips of the Guildford. Could someone advise on how to find his individual record, IE Indent number. ???

I did some research but I read a disturbing court case and decided not to post about it as it actually made me sick. All I'll say is it involved a dog. It's somewhere on my laptop. Usually I keep a blog whoisdeborahlee.blogspot but I deleted my research on him.
