Title: Eliza Hood
Post by: softly softly on Friday 22 March 13 19:43 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Wonder if you can help further. After years of looking in UK records for Eliza Hood a long shot is a Victoria marriage ref. She is mentioned in her brothers will as Eliza Freeman. No UK records but by chance looked at marriages in Australia and saw Eliza Hood/ Daniel William FREMAN-1853 Victoria ref 4137. Her father was Joseph and mother either Sophia or Sarah. I say this because her brothers mother was Sophia who died 1821 and father remarried 1825 to Sarah. I possibly have her UK baptism as c1827. Are you able to give me any more details and/or how would I go about ordering the marriage cert and will it give me any more info.

Thanks---John

Hi John, I have an Eliza Hood born 1826 living in Upper Stonnall Parish of Lichfield Staffordshire in the 1841 census. She is with her father Joseph born 1791 Brother Joseph born 1820, Sister Sarah born 1827 and a Sister Ann born 1840.

Does that sound like your family.

Neil, Sadly not my family. Joseph the father was born c1775 and died I believe c1836-he couldn't wait for civil registration could he for me to determin his age. Eliza did have a brother Joseph born 1806 but no sister Sarah.
Thanks

Maybe you could tell us John why you think your Eliza Hood would be in Australia. Is there some reason behind this, you say you have spent a lot of time researching her in England but not found her ??? Could you tell us what date is her Brothers will dated and where was it drafted, is that in Australia. You say you "possibly have her baptism as 1827" why are you not sure of this?

PROV has the will of
Daniel William FREEMAN, nurseryman, of Tooborac Victoria, died 19 September 1884, named William FREEMAN in the will and probate request (the papers include an explanation of why he dropped the name 'Daniel'). Sole beneficiary and executrix is his wife Eliza.

No help in finding if this is your Eliza though!

Eliza HOOD and William FRE*MAN had just one son recorded in the Index.
Edward Samuel FREMAN born 1854 BENA Reg # 5205

This child died the following year.
Edward Samuel FREEMAN Reg #4006

A widow Eliza FREEMAN married twice widowed Alfred KELLAM in 1895 Reg #4825
However, I cannot find a link to your Eliza HOOD as the record said her birthplace was CAMBRIDGESHIRE.

Hi, Thanks for all replies. The following is factual evidence so far.

1. William Hood (1809-1892) brother of Eliza wrote his will 6.5.1892. He states in it " To my sister Eliza Freeman an annunity of £50 during her life"
2. Eliza and William had a sister Harriet Sophia Tanner nee Hood who died and left a son Harry Tanner. He too is mention in the will. "To Harry Tanner sometimes know as Harry Tanner Freeman son of my late sister Harriet Sophia Tanner now living in the Colony of Victoria" This statement would appear to suggest that Eliza had "taken in/adopted" Harry.
3. The reason for some doubt about Eliza's mother is I do not have an age for her. If she was born pre 1821 then her mother would be Sophia, after 1825 her mother would be Sarah. Theres a double baptism of an Elizabeth (born 29.3.1823) & Stephen Hood ( born 14.12.1824)in St Philips Birmingham - parents Joseph and Sarah-fathers occ-Brass Founder. This ties in nicely with where the family were living around that time but is not full confirmation. Other than that I have no further info on Eliza.

Thanks

John

TROVE:
1903 Marriage of the son of Harry Tanner FREEMAN, of Heathcote - does not indicate that Harry is deceased.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/89327079 (two mentions on the same page)

A VERY tenuous connection  - so tenuous I am in two minds whether to put it on ???  :-\ - The Heathcote paper has a death notice for the (Daniel) William FREEMAN who died 1884, of Tooborac.  Tooborac is some 17k from Heathcote.

There is an obit for this man also but no mention of a wife, or other relatives  :(

John - where did the sister Harriet die? - UK or Aus?

Finding the notices given with the mentions of Heathcote certainly doesn't prove anything but it also doesn't rule out Eliza being the wife of William FREEMAN of Tooborac.

Judb, That's another mystery as to where Harriet died. She was certainly in the uk 1851 census with daughter Eliza Sophia and son Harry. Also in the household was I believe her sister Elizabeth aged 38 born Bilston Staffs. Her daughter Eliza Sophia dies3.3.1854 and Harriet is the witness. After this date she vanishes from my records, not on 1861 census so MAY have gone to Australia.

Excellent find Essie.  Still not sure if this Eliza FREEMAN nee Hood is is the same as the one John is seeking - unless the nieces/nephews give a clue. No mention of Harry Tanner FREEMAN though in this notice.

I'm thinking that ordering the marriage certificate or this Eliza is the only way to be sure - which is what you first enquired about, John.  ::)

You can order an 'uncertified historical image' from Victorian BMDs for $AU20.  It will be an image of the actual register  and is immediately available for you to download.

https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=purchaseImage

You will need the registration number for the year, and, as there may be a mistranscription of the groom's surname I would be making the request using the bride's name.

Let's know what you find.

Hi
Yes, I agree. That finding sits much better than the ELIZA KELLAM solution (with wrong father!)

Wonder who Eliza WALKER and Thomas C HOOD were in the case of this ELIZA FREEMAN.

Hi All,
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!! Eliza Walker nee Hood is her niece. Eliza Hood nee Freeman had a brother Edward Brettle Hood 1821- 1893(uk based all his life). He and his wife Emma had 3 children, Ernest Edward, Eliza and Edward Frances. Ernest was always UK based, Eliza married Henry Whitbread Walker and sailed to Australia 17.10.1880. I have a transcript of her journey with husband and children of their voyage. Edward Frances ended up in America. I now have a copy of the marriage certificate. Does not show a great deal that's helpful. 16.06.1853 Daniel William Freeman/ Eliza Hood married by Thomas Odell both of the city of Melbourne. Witnesses Fanny Lunge & Mary Walker. I have quite a lot of Hoods in Australia one way or another but who is THOMAS C HOOD, he does not appear in my tree as yet. Thanks to all who have helped in this posting. Another loose end tied up.

Hi, Sorry I do know who Thomas C Hood is. Thomas Courtney Hood born 1878 Glenelg SA. Parents John Ryley Hood (artist and early photographer) and Martha Mary Hubbe. John(1841) was the son of Samuel Hood 1807-1900 and a brother of Eliza Freeman nee Hood.

Thanks again for all your help, it just leaves me with trying to find Harriet Tanner nee Hood 1816/7, did she go to Australia after 1854?

Sparrett, Thanks for that, I do have full details of that side of the family. On the off chance whilst I was on the subject of Harriett Tanner could she possibly be the HARRIOTT Tanner who married William Coupland 1857 ref 1406-Victoria. Think she may have re-married yet again in 1869 to a Charles McLaughlin-wondered if you are able to do any searching on that for me please.

There is a death for a Harriet McLaughlin which fits in terms of age but the parents are not right, her maiden name appears to be TANNER, not HOOD  :(

Death, Victoria 1877 #6170
Harriet McLAUGHLIN, 56
Father's Name:   Tanner James
Mother's name:   Fanny Fryer
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1821

PROV has papers for this Harriet and her husband/s but I don't think she is your Harriet.

There are digitised probate papers for William COUPLAND died 14 November 1864, tailor of Thomas St Richmond, in which the executrix states that she is Harriett COUPLAND, widow of William COUPLAND and now wife of Charles McLAUGHLIN, of Ophir St Richmond.  Harriett signs with a cross. Probate was not granted until 1877.

Harriett McLAUGHLIN, d 25 April 1877, of  Ophir St, Richmond.  She leaves all to her husband, no mention of other family  :( This time she signs very shakily  - perhaps as the date of making the will and seeking probate for her former husband are so close to her death she was not well enough to sign properly  ???

Who was Harry's father?

Did he die in Uk?

Sue, Harriet TANNER was shown as a widow in Wandsworth UK in 1851 so presumably Harry's father had died some time before that.  Daughter Eliza born in Oxford abt 1841 , then Harry in Newport, Monmouthshire  abt 1843.  As they seem to have moved I'm not sure where/when Mr Tanner died..

If Henry/Harry Tanner Freeman ended up in Victoria, what are the chances of his brother Frederick Tanner ending up there as well. Born 1839 parents William and Harriet?

I recall seeing William TANNER's death c1843?

John HOOD probably has all this.  :-\ And I'm not sure if he's still looking for Frederick as well.  Never mind - a bit of a hunt won't hurt  :)

I do not see a death index entry for a Frederick TANNER and too many Frederick FREEMANs with no identifying information, in Australia but the index I use is not comprehensive.

Frederick TANNER b abt 1839

In 1841 Frederick is with his parents in Oxford - if Mary is the daughter of William and her age is correct Harriet is not her mother.
William Tanner   35 sailor
Harriott Tanner   20
Mary Tanner   9
Fredick Tanner   4
Eliza Tanner   8 Mo

In 1851 seems that Frederick is with his aunt and uncle still in Oxford - Harriet, Eliza and Harry are in Wandsworth, London - see above.
William Hood   40 superintendent of iron foundry works
Elizabeth Hood   39
Fredrick Hood   3 son
Fredrick Tanner   11 nephew, b Oxford,
Mary Williams   79 mother-in-law
Susan Williams   22 niece
Helen Williams   20 niece

However there is an age discrepancy between 1841 and 1851  ???

Cannot see him on UK censuses after 1851.

Hi, Thanks for carrying on. Indeed Harry's father was William and he did die in Newport. As for his brother Frederick I too cannot find him after 1851 but not sure it really matters. He may have gone to Australia! Like most RC's you try to tie up loose ends and your help with Eliza was great. The only other thing I know about Harriet is she was deceased by 1893 when her brother wrote his will stating Harry Tanner the son of my late sister Harriet. So looking for her 1854-93. The aunt and uncle Frederick is with in 1851 is William Elizabeth, the gentleman who wrote the will.

My Grandmother's Grandfather was William Tanner he was married to Harriet in 1888. Her maiden name was Jeffries. They had 2 sons. William was chief detective in Newport, South Wales. He was awarded a medal which I still have to this day. It was given to him in 1898.Sir Henry Mather-Jackson and others including the mayor of Newport honored him. He retired April 30 1922 I would have to find out more information if anyone needs it.
