I have done quite a bit of research on my Phillips relatives and the census links them up well but I would like to have concrete paper evidence of a birth in particular. The birth I am looking at is for a Jane Phillips. Jane would be my great-great-great grandmother. The census records record her as being born in or around 1855. We have searched as much as we can for baptisms and birth certificates but nothing seems to come up yet her elder and younger siblings do have birth certificates and baptism records.
Jane became Fishlock upon marriage. Her parents were Thomas and Susan/Susannah Phillips, both of Giant's Grave, Briton Ferry. How can I solve this situation?

Hi
Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/5 so numerous births went unregistered prior to then.
Re: baptism - although there may possibly be a record somewhere - it may not have been transcribed. Welsh transcriptions are much thinner on the ground than English/Welsh ones
You haven't said whereabouts Jane was born - only her parents birthplaces

Have you seen the Jane Phillips birth registered in Neath in Sep quarter 1855 (vol 11a, page 413).

We have asked, been told it's not her.

Strange 1871 entry - parents Thomas & Susan are shown as 58 & 57 respectively but they have a 3yr old daughter??
Thomas married Susannah Williams in Neath in 1850 as per freebmd

This is an interesting one isn't it. Their eldest son is a John Phillips (b.1851) and we had found a record of him. I can't make this one out.

I can't see them on the 1861 census though and in 1871 Jane is shown as 14 so birthyear 1856/57

Births

The 1871 says she was born in 1857 - and there's a birth registered in Neath in Mar quarter 1857 (11a, P419). How about this one?
EDIT: Sorry Carole, mine took ages to post so you beat me to it!

We asked at the registry office for them to search 1855 and 1857. They also search the years before and after and they say nothing comes up. The weird thing is Thomas and Susannah registered the older siblings and the younger ones but not her.
Her siblings were; John Phillips, Thomas, David, William and Ann.

I would ask for another check for the 1857 birth
-
Would there be alternative sources for births? Could it be that the baptism records could had been destroyed/damaged?
-
1881 census has a likelt looking Thomas aged 54 and wife Susan aged 57. Havent aged between census so likely one set of ages are wrong.

I will have to consider this.

Yes, the 1871 census is wrong - Thomas and Susannah have their birth years wrong. Though unsure if Jane's is wrong (need to find it) but we know John Phillips (1851) is still correct.

Have you tried the Jane Phillips registered jun qtr 1855 in Bridgend. i have family from maesteg and they varied registering children under neath and bridgend (always joked in the family that it depended which direction transport was going on the day!!)

Unless a baptismal record can be found showing her full birthdate and not just her christening date - then no
Could it be that the baptism records could had been destroyed/damaged?
Perhaps somebody with local knowledge of any such event can help with that one. The likeliest is lack of transcriptions. You are very much dependant on the willingness of volunteers to transcribe entries from the registers
Whilst it completes things to have the birth/baptism info - being realistic - apart from her actual birthdate - what other info will you obtain from a birth cert or baptismal entry that you don't already know from census entries?
The birth cert will give her parents names and mothers maiden name - already known
Her fathers occupation - already known
The baptismal entry probably won't show mothers maiden name so you will just get the date of baptism and her parents names and possibly her actual birthdate but that's not guaranteed
-
Well we know who Jane's Parent's are, as she is with Thomas and Susannah in the census until she get's married just that I hoped for a birth certificate as I would not mind a precise date etc. I will check at Bridgend in case she was registered there. With thanks to all who helped.

You mention that all the other childrens births were registered - just Jane's is missing.
Were the others all registered in Neath Reg district?
If so - I would be more likely to trust her age on the 1871 than the age she herself gives on later censuses.
That 1857 birth in Neath was in the March qtr which would make her 14 in 1871 so I really would consider asking for a check on that again before moving to the Bridgend possibility
I actually have a similar situation in my own FH in that I know my great grans birthdate from her christening record but there is no birth reg for her - and that is 1877 after it became a fineable offence not to register a birth.
Like your Phillips family - all her siblings were registered and I had to get a copy of one of her sisters birth certs to find her mothers maiden name
