I'm not particularly good at this, but I am trying to find some more info out about my family heritage. Last name is connett and I have records taking me back to James Lewis Connett born in 1877 and married Emma Maud Western in 1902 in New Plymouth New Zealand. And I believe his father is Robert Connett whom I believe took a census in Torquay, Devon, England. Does anyone have anymore info going back further etc?

Thank you so much for the quick response!, yes I believe that is them :) So between the 1881 census and the 1891 census they lost a daughter Emily? And had another one Mary? (My wife's name is Emily).. So they must be the first of the 3 marriages and have gotten married in 1875, one year later had there 1st child. This is so cool!, Does it go back any further than that or what would I have to do to keep going back?
Thank you so much for your help!
-
1841 is the earliest census - but I can't find then there?!
P.S.
I've asked a mod to move this topic moved to Devon - there may be a Devon expert out there who can help?!
-
That's all good, hopefully some more things pop up. You have been a great help. Thank you for your time.

As Robert/Elizabeth married late 1841 they would not together on the 1841 Census.
1841 Robert CONNELL (mistranscribed) is a Male Servant in the Household of John Barker, a Farmer, in Kingskeswell.
So unfortunately not with his Parents.
A Family Tree has Roberts Father as JOHN 1785-1869 but no Mothers name.
FreeREG has this Marriage which may be Roberts Parents;
01 January 1807, St Mary, Kingskerswell, Devon
John CONNETT and Ann POPHAM
1851 Census
Kingskerswell, Devon
HO107/1872/58/25
John CONNETT, 66, Head, Mar, Ag Lab, born Coffinswell
Ann Connett, 70, Wife, Mar, born Ashburton
You would need the 1841 Marriage Cert to confirm their Fathers names and occp's

Thanks Trish,
I'm thinking that my family link would go back to the Robert Connett and Emily Gillard's Marriage in 1875 as their son is James Lewis Connett who is my great grandfather... The only other "knowledge' I have on the Connett name is that it derived of D'Connetté (forgive the spelling, pronounced day-con-a-tay) which apparently came form france. Not sure if any of that would help haha.

Ok this is how I see it;
JAMES LEWIS Connett 1877
Parents ROBERT Connett 1847 and Emily GILLARD
ROBERT Connett 1847
Parents ROBERT Connett 1818 or 1821 and Elizabeth BROOKING
This Robert is born c 1818-1821 on various Census
Found Robert c 1818/1821 as per 1841 Census
Probable Parents for ROBERT Connett 1818/1821
JOHN Connell and Ann POPHAM

One Question.. How did you get the probable parents as John Connell etc?
-
Hi JC,
I quoted earlier;
"A Family Tree has Roberts Father as JOHN 1785-1869 but no Mothers name".
Now if they had the 1841 M/C of Robert/Elizabeth this may be where his Fathers name came from.
I cant find Roberts Christening with my resources to confirm info.
As John Connett/Ann Popham Married 1807 Kingskerswell I think them to be likely Parents for Robert.
The M/C would confirm Roberts Fathers name/occp :)

Hi Everyone,
Long time I know!, I hope all is well in your worlds :)
So I have just returned from a trip back from New Zealand and managed while I was in New Plymouth to track down some amazing info on my family (too much to go into detail). But it would appear that I may have got my info slightly wrong in the previous posts and wondered if anyone would be able to search a bit more as it appears I have hit a will.
So, James Baxter Connett who is my great great grandfather turns out was born in Exeter England in 1843, married Lavinia Snell in 1863 and in 64 moved to Queensland Australia for 2 years before arriving in New Plymouth New Zealand. But this is where the history for me seems to end, I cannot find who James parents were, but I know that there are records dating back to the mid 1500's for Connett in that region. I also found out that he studied at Kings College while in England.
James died in 1919 and with Lavinia had 4 children, Roy, James Lewis Connett (my great grandfather, who was actually born in New Plymouth, not Devon), and two other girls.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Julian

Thanks KGarrad!
That looks to be the one, as James went on to become a major farmer in both QLD and New Plymouth. Do they keep going back beyond his father John or does the trail end there?

Hello! I believe we are related - my great great grandfather = James Baxter Connett too! My grandmother = Irene Lavinia Barclay née Connett. This collection of info has been very Helpful to me also.
