Title: How can I be sure
Post by: waralan on Saturday 10 July 04 03:10 BST (UK)
Hi all,
I hope you won't think I am a cheap person.  But how can I make sure I am getting the right birth certificate for my grandfather, Edward Rutter, who was born on Aug. 8, 1864, in Lincolnshire, England, without spending a large amount of money?

You can never be 100% sure of these things. I have wasted quite a few £7.00's on getting the wrong certificate. If it is convenient you can visit the Lincs Archives and look up the baptismal record of the place where your grandfather was born.

You can save a bit of the cost for a wrong certificate by asking the GRO not to issue it if the parents names you have supplied are incorrect. They will refund you (I think) £3.50

Hi,

If you would like to give me the area he was born in I can look at the parish records and see what they say.  They should give his parents. I live in Lincoln so get to the archives quite regulary.

I omitted to add that you can search http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ to find a reference number which you will need if you are to order a certificate

Panda,
That is the trouble, I don't know the town/city in which he was born.  Not knowing that, I suppose, would entitle searching say 600 parishes.
