Title: NZ to UK 1950s Lookup
Post by: sharren1837 on Tuesday 25 June 13 20:36 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

If anyone can help as i would really appreciate a lookup for my aunt; i believe she worked as a nurse in NZ after WW2 & that she returned home via Glasgow port sometime in the late 1950s.

i dont have access to Ancestry & Find My Past only has the outgoing passenger lists. Her name was Marie T Clare born 1923, British Citizen,  She had arrived via Wellington.

Kind regards

Sharon

I saw that one, but wasn't sure if it is the right one as the image says she was what looks like school teacher and was a Canadian citizen. She was on a visit to Hull.

In 1964 she must still be a nurse as the London Electoral Registers has her recorded at Archway Wing, Whittington Hospital.

Yes she became Matron @ a London hospital but i think she had retired by the mid 1970s as i remember visiting her as a child in Ealing where she then lived.  i think she trained @ Leeds General in the 1930/40s

Was she the one born in Knaresborough in 1923?

I'm still puzzled though as this is what it says about her on the image - she was visiting for 2 months

It does actually say that she is a Canadian Citizen as shown by her passport and that her last place of residence was Canada. I wonder if the information on the passenger list is wrong.

when she travels to NZ in 1957 her occupation is listed as S. R. Nurse @ Staincliffe Gen. Hospital, Dewsbury with a UK Passport????  i dont know what her purpose was for visiting NZ or when she returned to the UK.

I cant find any record of her going to Canada either. From those records it looks as if she went to Canada, came back to England and then went to NZ the following year. Passenger lists stop after 1960, so she may have returned from NZ after that.

Could she have been sent to Canada as an evacuee at the start of WW2 and stayed on there after the war? Although she would have been 16 in 1939.

hadnt considered the possibility of her being sent to Canada as an evacuee?  she spent some/most/all ?  of her childhood in a catholic orphanage so i guess evacuation could have been a possibilty.

Lots to think about.

Just putting another needle into the haystack .... perhaps she travelled out on the ship working in the ship's hospital. :-\

Quite a few children were sent out to Canada from orphanages under The British Home Child scheme. I wonder if that is how she got out there and therefore had a Canadian Passport?  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~britishhomechildren/

Hi Kiwi,

do you mean on the evacuee ships to canada? i guess thats possible, she would be 16 as groom says but i believe UK school leaving age was 14 then & i think she began training in nursing early on.

Hi Groom,

She would be 23 in 1946 & my grandmother was in touch with her in 1950 (she was pregnant with my mum) but im not sure whether this was by letter or in person.

No, in 1957 and being paid for it while she was working.  Nurses pay back then wasn't great I think, it would have taken a while to save up for the voyage .... just tossing my thoughts out :D

Hi Kiwi,

i guess thats possible, although she had inherited a large sum of money upon my ggrandmothers death in 1951. she did like the finer things in life, so its quite possible. nothing seems to make much sense at the moment.

The bit that doesn't seem to be fitting is the description of her on the passenger list ie Canadian citizen, a school teacher, visiting Britain for 2 months. As I said it may have been a mistake on the form especially if she inherited a lot of money in 1951.

Hi groom,

Yes i must agree with you, however, i dont know much about my aunts early life. but the date of birth is correct, i have her birth & death certs & the birth details tally. my ggrandmother is listed as her foster parent (in her will) & she is left the equivelent of  £10,000 in 1951. my grandmother is left the equivelent of £350,000.

My aunts parental details acc.to her BC look to be legitimate but upon further scrutiny bear no resemblance to the facts.

Groom,

thanks for 'The British Home Child scheme' links you posted, it makes for interesting reading & if she did go, i can understand why she never spoke of it.

Hi Shareen,

Would this be the one? -

Marie Clare
Birth Date - 1921
Age - 32
Port of Departure - Durban, South Africa
Arrival Date - 9 Oct 1953
Port of Arrival - Southampton, England
Ports of Voyage - Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town
Ship Name - Athlone Castle

She is shown as 'Housewife' and has children with her.

So it doesn't look like the Marie T Clare you are researching.

That does look interesting, she would have been 30 in 1954.

Do you think 'Severton' maybe mistranscribed as 'Tiverton' in which case this could be the property

Looks very nice

The actual ship's manefest show 'Severton', however it could be incorrect when recording the details.

The property looks rather appealing.............. :)
