Title: Can you find my Grand Aunt Marian?
Post by: wakokid on Thursday 12 September 13 19:49 BST (UK)
I am trying to track down my Grand Aunt Marian Nutman (and indeed the rest of the family) in the 1901 and 1911 census returns.

Screen capture picture attached shows all I know so far.  In the 1891 census the family is mistranscribed as Hutman.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

gortonboy and heywood thank you.

Can I ask a question of you both?

I am currently using Ancestry which was not able to find any of the records you have listed.

In the Devonport record the whole family is listed as having the surname Kahana not Nutman.

In 1911 Marion is living with a family called Churchill in Byker but is also transcribed as Churchill.

How do you do your searches?  Do you use a different website(s)?

That must be a particularly bad transcription and you can leave a correction on the Ancestry record.
Generally, if a search does not come up immediately, I would try various combinations. For example: first name, year of birth and place if birth; name plus parent or spouse: use * for some letters - you do need to have at least 3 letters and use exact search e.g H**ry would show you Henry or Harry which often are used interchangeably.
Really, just keep trying. Whether that would have found you Marian though, I'm not sure. ;)
