I believe Edward's father was John, who married twice according to trees I have seen - with no sources.
John may have been born in Evenley in 1763 to William & Elizabeth.
I wondered if anyone was able to access parish records for Farthinghoe and help me please.
Any help with this family going back from Edward would be great.
Edward married Susanne Gardiner in 1823 in Farthinghoe.

From the Northants Baptism Index:
Farthinghoe
9 Dec 1794 - Edward Newman son of John and Esther baptised
No burial for him before 1812 so more than likely the correct person, although I don't have the post 1813 burial index.
This would appear to be his parent's marriage:
Aston le Walls
7 Oct 1789
John Newman and Ester Brown, both of this parish. First child in Farthinghoe is 1792. I can't see any children to them elsewhere.
There is a John and Mary Newman having children in there too but they would appear to overlap according to the Northants Baptism Index as there is one child to them in Farthinghoe in 1790 and the others are post 1800. I suppose it's possible the 1790 has the wrong mother's name listed? The original would need to be checked.
Esther would appear to be buried 12 Dec 1800 in Farthinghoe.

Thanks for such a brilliantly rapid reply- and I do think this is Edward who was buried in Farthinghoe on 16 July 1874. His age was given as 80, so pretty accurate!
:)
Other unsourced trees have John remarrying Mary (Whitmel?) in 1801 and having more children, but Edward is the one I am interested in.

The "second" marriage, would appear to be:
Farthinghoe
28 Sept 1801 John Newman and Mary Whitmel, both of this parish
No marital status listed on entry on Northants Marriage Index. There is a burial of a John in Farthinghoe on 29 May 1802, but it could be the son I suppose baptised in 1797 as no age or other details are listed.
Really depends on whether the 1790 child has the wrong mother's name listed I suppose, althought the 1801 marriage would tie in with a death of first wife the previous year. John and Mary Newman were still baptising children after 1802.

So there is no way I can confirm that John Newman was actually born in Evenley?....unless there is christening for him in Farthinghoe.
-
NBI is showing a John Newman buried in Farthinghoe in 1852, born c1763, and also one buried there in 1871 born 1797 so that may scupper the John buried in 1802 as being the son baptised in 1797.
The 1851 Census confirms the 1797 John Newman on 1851 Census in Farthinghoe has birthplace listed as Farthinghoe, so that isn't him dying in 1802. It also confirms the 1763 John Newman on 1851 Census in Farthinghoe was born Evenly, but whether he is Edward's father really depends on who died in 1802 I'm afraid. You can't just assume it wasn't your John.

I have the 1787 John in Farthinghoe on 1851 census.......I want to think Evenley John was Edward's father! He must have been born nearby and if there is no christening in Farthinghoe and he did live there as census records show then I am happy to go for John nor to William and Elizabeth in Evenley.

Northants Baptism Index has baptism for the Evenley John:
Evenley
10 Jul 1763
John Newman son of William and Elizabeth baptised
The Northants Marriage Index has the following:
Evenley
27 Dec 1757
William Newman and Elizabeth Hart, both single, both of this parish.
Problem of the 1802 Farthinghoe John Newman burial remains to be resolved to confirm if these are Edward's father and grandparents.
The 1851 Census John Newman was born 1797, not 1787, so ties in with the 1797 baptism.

Thanks so much for your swift help.......shouldn't have struggled all day with it! i was almost getting in my car an driving to Northampton to sort it out!
Don't suppose you can trace Esther Brown??
:)
-
1841 Census shows Edward and Susannah living next door to John and Mary Newman so it's possible those are his father and stepmother.
-
How did I miss that! That's great, many thanks.....I have birth year for Esther of 1766 from another tree but nothing more.
-
Can't see a baptism for her on the Northants Baptism Index I'm afraid. There are some Esther Browns but none baptised that early, not under variation of Hester either.
I suppose it's possible she could be a widow.
-
Don't suppose her age is given at her burial? Never mind, got to stop somewhere!
Once again many thanks.
-
Sorry no age listed on burial. Not uncommon before 1813.

I tried Oxfordshire but only possibility is birth in Benson, south Oxfordshire - Hester Brown 1766

Was that from the Oxfordshire FHS search or another source? Definately looks like Hester wasn't from Northamptonshire, unless she was a widow which would be difficult to confirm because nothing obvious in Farthinghoe or Aston le Walls.
-
my usual familysearch source:
Name: Hester Brown
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 22 Jun 1766
Christening Place: BENSON,OXFORD,ENGLAND
Father's Name: James Brown
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Hester
Mother's Birthplace:
But it is a long way from Aston le Walls unless they met half way!! Well not even half way as Benson to Aston le Walls is about 4 times as far.
-
not Hester Brown - she had illegitimate daughter in Oxon in 1805. thanks a lot :)
-
Familysearch isn't a good source for Oxfordshire, it doesn't have a great deal on there. If you want to confirm whether Esther came from Oxon, you'd do better by trying the Oxfordshire FHS search facility. I'm not sure if it's complete yet, but they don't charge that much - http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/.

Thanks for your advice - will have a look tomorrow - been family researching all day so need a break!
