Title: Dimmock / Dufty
Post by: Justanothersmith on Thursday 02 January 14 00:23 GMT (UK)
G'day

I'm trying to establish if the Thomas Dimmock who married Lucy Dufty, at the Wesleyan Church in Huntly on 20th March 1901, is part of my extended tree. Without purchasing the marriage certificate is there any way I can find out his father's name.

There are the beginnings of a family tree at ancestry.com -but  doesn't include birth or parental information for Thomas DIMMOCK as yet.  :(

Electoral rolls :

1905-06
Thomas DIMMOCK - occupation, miner -- with Louisa DIMMOCK, married, residing at Huntly.

Earlier on the 1896 Waikato Roll >

DIMMOCK - Thomas - miner - residing at Kimihia
DIMMOCK - William ... same occupation and address

Is knowing Thomas's occupation, of help ?

A search of FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ shows three possibles:

Thomas DIMMOCK, birth registered at Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire in 1876, March quarter.

Thomas George DIMMOCK, birth registered at Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire in 1876, June quarter.

Thomas DIMMOCK, birth registered at Stourbridge, Staffordshire in 1877, September quarter.

Note that not all counties are completely indexed.

Bearing in mind that you're searching for Thomas's antecedants, perhaps his death notice or an obituary might help.

Can anyone suggest a newspaper covering the region where he lived?

A possible lateral angle :

NZ BMD:
William Richard DIMMOCK
Annie LYONS
Married 1915

1911: RAGLAN: William Richard DIMMOCK, Woodleigh, Farmer

1919:  RAGLAN
Louisa & Thomas DIMMOCK - Tauwhare, Sharemilker (are these the same pair as in Maramarua)
William & Richard DIMMOCK - Woodleigh, Farmer

William Richard DIMMOCK and wife Annie both appear on the Electoral Rolls at Woodleigh. Annie appears as late as 1935.

In 1946, William has a new wife - but still on the rolls for Woodleigh:  Grace Ethel.
In 1949, they are in the Otahuhu District, residing at Beachlands ( East Auckland)
In 1950 William died - buried in Henderson, West Auckland: Waikumete Cemetery.
http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/cnlser/cm/cemeterysearch/default.aspx
He was a Sheep Farmer, age 71  when he died 1950 (so born around 1879)
His Widow Grace Ethel  died in 1964 age 80, cremated at Waikumete. WH Tongue Funeral Director.

And I think this is a first wife:
Train Accident in Huntly:1912
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xfj/
May Charlotte (or Charlotte May) DIMMOCK nee WALSH age 25, wife of Settler, William Richard DIMMOCK of Te Aku. Had been married for 11mths to Richard DIMMOCK, late of Waimata Valley and now of Te Uku where Mr Dimmock has a 650 acres and is a sheep farmer.  NZ BMD show they married in 1911

The article says Te Aku and Te Uku - but it is Te Uku, in Raglan.   The article may also be pointing to William Richard using his middle name.

Hello.

In farming terms Te Akau and Te Uku are neighbouring farming districts on the back route from Tuakau [Taukau Bridge] through to the township of Raglan. In those days sheep farming was predominant.

DUFTY is a name I associate with North Waikato.

Just checked the index on BATTLES, BUGGIES AND BABIES, by Sophie May JOHNSTONE-SMITH, which is a family history story of the pioneering JOHNSTONE family, of that greater Raglan area, because LYONS was/is another of the connected family names, but DIMMOCK does not get a mention in the book.

- Alan.

PS. If you are into cold calling, I can only find 3 South Auckland / Waikato WHITE PAGES listings for DIMMOCK and 10 for DUFTY in the Waikato Region. One at Hoe o Tainui I think could be the family I recalled.

G'day

Thanks for the information.

First up apologies for misnaming Louisa as Lucy in my earlier post.

The Thomas I'm researching was born in Rowley Regis in 1875 [a son of Joseph & Emma].

This group of Dimmocks emigrated to Australia in the 1880s but Joseph, Emma & some of their kids returned to England in 1892. Thomas doesn't appear to be with them.

There is a tree on Ancestry that suggests the Thomas who married Louisa was the son of Joseph & Emma.

That's all I really know.

Hi
What were you wanting to know about Tom and Louisa? I may be able to help? it's been awhile though. Sorry that this is so random after such a long time but just opened the site today.

Also what do you think is your connection to them?
What country are you from. (told you I am new to this site).

G'day

As I indicated I was trying to establish if Tom was the son of Joseph Dimmock [1851-1927] and Emma Clee [1836-1914].

If this is, indeed, so then he is the brother of my great great grandfather William Dimmock [1856-1915].

I was born in England but have lived in Australia for most of life.
