Title: Benjamin Staple, a Quaker of Chadlington, 1709
Post by: Opal on Monday 06 January 14 15:35 GMT (UK)
Benjamin Staple, Yeoman,  died and was buried 6th July 1709 at Milton Under Wychwood in the Quaker Burial Ground.  His wife was Isabell.  They had a family and those children were married etc within the Quakers of Witney.  The Staple family were involved in the founding of Meeting Houses etc within the area of Banbury, Chadlington, Charlbury and Witney.  I am unable to find his parents/birth/baptism in approx. 1620 - have searched Chadlington PR - and wondered if anyone else has any knowledge of this Staple family or beginnings of the Quaker Movement in this area of Oxfordshire? Thankyou.

Hi Opal

I cannot help much with your query other than to say the family name still exists in Witney today.

There is still a burial ground with headstones behind the old Quaker Meeting House on Woodgreen Hill, Witney. Perhaps there may be a headstone which is for one of yours?
I am not in Witney for a while but someone on here may be?
Have you explored the OFHS CD OXF-WIT01 on which are Quaker records for Witney 1667 to 1837?

Thank you for your information and interest.  Though I have the marriage what I didn't have was that Nicholas Marshall was a schoolmaster and his father of Lancashire.  That ties in with at least one other, I know of, Quaker preachers coming from Lancashire to the Witney/Banbury area.
