Robert and Sarah came to Australia aboard "Northumberland" c 1852. I have a family member descended from their daughter Mary Rebecca King b 30 April 1854 in Longford, Tasmania. Mary Rebecca has distinct Mediterranean features and a very Anglicised name which is mystifying. How could I find out what her origins are ? So far all I have is that Robert and Sarah came from Lincolnshire. Robert's fa was Thomas king, Mo Alice Thulby or Thurlby, Sarah's pa John Strickland and Rebecca King.

Tasportal only has a birthdate for Sarah STRICKLAND (1823), no other information. The only mention that I can see for Robert is the shipping record below.
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8
Tasportal shows Robert's arrival:
Robert KING, per Northumberland 20 Feb 1853 & 1 male (?) child
Ref: CSO24/1/216 p120 p127
No mention of Sarah, and no mention of the port of departure.
This may be Robert and Sarah's marriage:
Marriages, Jun qr 1851, registered at Spalding, Lincolnshire, Vol 14, p1071
Sarah STRICKLAND and on the same page:
Robert KING
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Wondering if this is another child born to Robert and Sarah - Surfleet is in the registration district of Spalding.

Doesn't help find your Mary Rebecca though :(

Is this her marraige?
Tasmania, 1875, reg 620 at Port Sorell
Mary Rebecca KING
George Linden SHADBOLT
Marriage Date: 21 Sep 1875
I am a little confused. You say you are looking for her 'origins' but you know her parents' names. Do you mean you are wanting to go back further?

Judith, I think 'Lectu' is trying to find out which ancestor is responsible for Mary Rebecca's Mediterranean features.
cheers :)

All of the places mentioned in my previous post and in this one are within a few miles of each other and easily seen on Googlemap.
Possibly Sarah's baptism:
St Mary the Virgin church, Frampton, Lincolnshire
RegisterNumber 196
DateOfBirth 29 Mar 1823
BaptismDate 30 Mar 1823
Sarah, dau of John STRICKLAND and Rebecca
Abode: Frampton
Father's Occupation: Shoemaker
File Number 15299
Probable siblings, all baptised same church and with same parents, (dates are for the baptisms not births)
13 Feb 1825 Thomas STRICKLAND
22 Apr 1827 Ann STRICKLAND
18 Jul 1830 Mary STRICKLAND
17 Jun 1832 Rebecca STRICKLAND
05 Apr 1835 John STRICKLAND (Father's occ shown as 'gardener' this time)
Here is this family in 1841 but without Sarah who would have been aged 18 so was possibly elsewhere.
Living at Sea Rd, Frampton, all born in Lincolnshire
John Strickland 45, shoemaker,
Rebecca Strickland 45
Thos Strickland 15
Mary Strickland 10
Rebecca Strickland 8
John Strickland 6
Parents in 1851, living at Church End, Frampton
John Strickland 54, b North Luffenham, Rutland, Master Cordwainer
Rebecca Strickland 56, b Moulton, Lincs
Rebecca Strickland 18, b Frampton
John Strickland 16, b Frampton, Cordwainer apprentice
John STRICKLAND of Frampton and Rebecca KING married 22 November 1821, St Botolph's Boston
Seems as though Mary Rebecca's maternal line is composed of Lincolnshire village folk.
I can't see much for the KING family as there are quite a few entries with similar forenames so too difficult to separate.
Cheers, Judith

Possibly - but nowhere near enough info to be certain
1841 at Fosdyke, Lincolnshire
Robert KING, 20 (ages rounded in 1841 so not a reliable age), ag lab, born in Lincolnshire.
He may be in the household of
Edward Sutton 55
Mary Sutton 45
Dorothy Sutton 80
I's difficult to see whether they are the same household or separate.

Marriage:
St Andrew's church, Heckington, Lincolnshire
12 Aug 1813
Thomas KING of Aswarby
Alice THURLBY (her parish is not given which implies that she was living in the parish of Heckington)
Witnesses: Thomas GOODBARNE, Susana KING
FileNumber 19185
So, again, good Lincolnshire stock.
Unless Mary Rebecca was adopted or the off-spring of a relationship it would seem that her parents and grandparents are from Lincs.

My source for these BMDS is FreeReg. They all fit neatly with the information you have given but these records are not necessarily correct.

Thankyou Judith for your research and cupoflife for clarifying my request.
It is clear they are of English stock so the only option is adoption. I have in mind too that many Spanish settled in Ireland at the time of the Armada and wonder if there is a connection here to explore? A mystery !
Many descendants of Mary Rebecca Shadbolt(nee King) even today show random darker skin and/or eyes that affirm my idea that there is Mediterranean ancestry there somewhere.

Looking back over the family more closely (been a while) since you have been so helpful Judith, I see that Rebecca b 16 May 1852 died on board the 'Northumberland' en route to Australia (Tasmania) 27 December 1852. Mary Rebecca was born 1854 in Longford, Tasmania so it doesn't really bode well for adoption, but not impossible of course. I also rememer that I have a newspaper interview with Mary Rebecca when she was in her eighties in Ulverstone, Tasmania commenting she was well versed in the Spanish language ! She also mentioned their settlement at Sassafras in a thickly forested area, and a visit by bushrangers.
Well, the plot thickens I guess ! :-)
Three sons followed for Robert and Sarah King from 1856 to 1860.

This is the article giving an account of the interview with Mary Rebecca in 1935.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/86568774
The writer says that Mary was reading a book of Spanish history when she visited - perhaps not actually reading in Spanish ???
The account of her little sister and her aunt dying on the voyage is sad. The mention of the leather shoes would add weight to the findings for Sarah's father whose occupation was given in a couple of records as 'shoemaker'. A very interesting read.
TROVE also has death notices and an obit for her which you have probably seen.

I tried to upload the same Trove info as you have put up Judith, including the shoe connection ! Something happened to my post, possibly left it too long unposted.
Anyway, I too was going to point out that Mary was reading the Spanish history so I suspect some connection was there. The photograph of Mary and family in the book "Sassafras : A history of Settlement and its People" shows her clearly having darker skin tone.
I keep coming back to this question again and again so I hope one day an answer will come.

Hi Lectu/Judb
Noticed it's been a while since last update on this thread. But was wounder if you have found any more infomation from your inital question, as i am a relative to Robert and sarah so it intrests me in the origins of the darker skin tone also.
