Can someone please take a look on the 1911 on the return for the Charles Hutton household at 8 Harcourt Terrace, Brithdir (Gelligaer). I am interested in the boarder John Herbert Speak(s) (e) not sure of the last letter. I would appreciate help with his surname and also help with his birthplace. I read it as Barnley, Radshire............but that can't be right.
Thanks, Roy

Looks like 'Speaks' and 'Barnley, Radshire' to me too, or maybe 'Burnley, Yorkshire' though Burnley is in Lancashire!
However the only John Herbert Speak* birth I can find between 1890 and 1893 is in Brecknockshire for a John Herbert Speake in JunQ 1891 so I guess this could be him :-\

A different possible spelling here
John Herbert Speke
Born St. John's, Burnley
Died 26 Mar 1915, France & Flanders
Enlistment Location: Tredegar, Mon
Private, 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers
No 10760

Thanks Deidre
I must admit I thought it could be Barnsley but I couldn't make out what was written underneath.

That looks good Mabel, though I can't find that birth ???

Me neither
here's the Brecon chap on 1901, who I don't see in 1911
John Speake 61 - b Clun
Alfred Speake 17 - son b Llanbadarn, Radnorshire
Alice Speake 14 - daughter b Llanbadarn, Radnorshire
John Speake 9 - nephew b Brecon
William Gallier 18 - servant
RG13, 5183, 59, 6.

Hi Mabel
The nephew aged 9 on the 1901 looks interesting, the John Herbert in Brithdir on the 1911 is aged 19 years, could this be the J Speake named on the Brithdir War Memorial I wonder.
-
Maybe the 1911 says, or should say, Radnorshire :-\

There's a John Henry Speak birth in Burnley, Lancs in DecQ 1891 which would match the age on the 1911 and part of the location.
And John Speak, Burnley Lancs in MarQ 1895, and John Hubert Speak, Burnley Lancs in JunQ 1896, though both ages are a few years out for the 1911.

You've got a right old job on your hands Roy, given that a number of people you're looking for have no age or next of kin on their CWGC records ::) and several do not appear to be from the area....

It does look interesting... but it doesn't match the John Herbert SDGW record though, showing birth in Burnley, or the John Herbert with the query birth location on the 1911 :-\
