Title: Ellwood, Thomas of Kendal Westmorland
Post by: scrupul0us on Friday 21 February 14 00:49 GMT (UK)
Hello,

My first time here trying to track down a "missing" generation I have in my documented lineage.

I am looking for the ancestors of Thomas Ellwood (born 1802, died Oct 1876, in Kendal) and spouse Agnes Townsend of Westmorland.

They had a son, Thomas Edward Ellwood born 12/15/1831 in New Hutton and came to USA 1855 with wife Mirriam Wilcox born 7/30/1829 in England.

I haven't been able to find anything about Thomas's (born 1802) parents in the late 1700's.

Any help would be graciously appreciated.

Thank you kindly =)

Sadly I do not as most of the resources I have been able to find only start around 1836, namely BMD and parish.

Parish records seem to stop around 1743:
http://www.cumberlandarchives.co.uk/content/category/4/13/27/

I found a few Ellwoods in Stricklandgate:

ELLWOOD John, Strg (2)
ELLWOOD Margrat, Strg
ELLWOOD Mary, Strg

... from the Constables Census Westmorland 1787 here:

http://edenlinks.rootsweb.ancestry.com/1gp/RECORDS/CC/EW/STRIK5.HTM

But I have no way to link Thomas Ellwood of 1802 back one generation to fill the void.

That said, the Kendal records aren't complete so there may be others, however bridging the gap is proving to be a challenge

Thank you!

Now, IF I'm using familysearch correctly the next generation up should be:

Daniel's (1728) parents were Edmund and Elizabeth Robinson, married 14 October 1725 in Carlisle, Northumberland, England and they had 4 children:

John (c 15 Feb 1738, Dufton)
Lydia (c 01 Feb 1729, Dufton)
Samuel (c 13 Oct 1726, Dufton)
Daniel (c 02 Jun 1728, Dufton)

Hoping I got that right =)

The only reason I question it is the marriage in Carlisle which is over 2 hours away from Kendal (by today's travel standards)

Actually some of that does look wrong based on a genealogy search (versus record search) on familysearch...

When I pair Edmund and Elizabeth, I get this for their children:

children:
Daniel /Ellwood/,
Edward /Ellwood/,
John /Ellwood/,
William /Ellwood/,
Richard /Ellwood/

I'm thinking due to the diverse number of Ellwoods, the gene. search is going to be most accurate.

Gillian, can you let me know if I'm wrong or off base here?

I did double check my tree using the gene. search where my own paper records end and so far everything looks spot on.

Thanks, I'm really excited to be getting this far back but don't wan't to get so caught up that I'm committing incorrect info to my lineage.

Thanks =)

Well... I think I've brought this to it's fullest extent...

Apparently I go alllllll the way back to Edward and Ellyn Ellwood back in the 1540's which after Googling around brought me to a few discussions here (many by you Gillian)

Based on what I've read online, this is as far back as one can expect to get back in English history:

http://hayesgreene.wikispaces.com/Ellwood_Family

Has anyone broken this barrier in their Elwood / Ellwood research?

Hi
Just a slight correction
Carlisle is in Cumberland not Northumberland
Dufton is a small township on the outskirts of Appleby which is about half
way between Kendal and Carlisle but would still have taken a good days travel
on horse

Hi

Yes you are correct and you link up into Bruce Morrison's Ellwood resaerch which goes back to Edward & Ellyn of Dufton. I too any many others who have Ellwoods from this neck of the woods link into the Dufton tree.

Edward & Ellyn are as far back as the parish registers go. There are Ellwoods in Penrith at the same time but no link has been found with the Dufton lot.

Gillian

It's funny you should mention Bruce Morrison as I've come across his name and website URL countless times but his website is gone:

http://community-2.webtv.net/BBmorrison/EllwoodGenealogy/

Not even archive.org's wayback machine has a copy of it...

Do you have a copy of his Ellwood works that were on that website by chance?

Hi

I see what you mean! Bruce's site is no longer available!

Last year I had noticed that his email address had been removed from the site and that his old email address was not working either! It makes you wonder if he is no longer with us.

I did make some copies of his site. I will see if I can find them. What do you need exactly?

Gillian,

Not sure, I was just interested to see what was there.

While I now have my lineage back to 1545, I don't really have much in the way about what my Ellwoods did in their lives

Hi
Just hot of the press
Thomas Ellwood [Carpenter] had a hand in two deeds for property
in Scattergate (Sub district of Appleby)
date 1737 and 1743
sorry it does not go back but it will put some flesh on an Ellwood

I haven't been able to find anything about Thomas's (born 1802) parents in the late 1700's.

We have his wife as Agnes Townson, and they had a son Townson Ellwood. Perhaps that was a corrupted version of Townsend, but it seems to have persisted. We have their son Thomas as being born in Skelsmergh.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, so do you have his christening ie

Thos Ellwood Birth 14th June 1802 Christening 19th June 1802 Grayrigg, Kendal Father Edward Mother Abigail

We have that as a different Thomas Ellwood -- not the one who married Agnes Townson/Townsend, but this one seems to have married first Isabella Dent and then Elizabeth Burton.

Carlisle has always been in Cumbria (then Cumberland).

There are quite a lot of old Wills for El(l)woods bet 1661-1750 - Wills proved in the Consistory Court of Carlisle, including the following in Dufton:
Agnes wid Dufton 1678 W
Chris, yeo, Dufton 1676 W
Chris yeo, Dufton 1698 W
Edmund, yeo Dufton 1710 W
Edmund, yeo Dufton 1730 WI 437 (56)
Edw yeo, Dufton 1677 W
Lancelot, Dufton 1683 AI
Mark, Dufton 1739 WI 49
Mark, 1658 Dufton (I have a full copy of this will if you want a copy please PM me)
Thos, Dufton 1665 WI (138)
Tho Dufton 1744 W 217 (136v)
Wm Dufton 1671 AI

AI = Administration of goods, Inventory
WI = Will, inventory

These are all held at Cumbria Archive Centre, Carlisle, I would have thought you could email them and for a small fee they could send to you.

With the Yeomen - it's possible that there will be Manorial Court Records for Dufton which survive and will give details of land transactions, property etc. It may be worth checking on National Archives website, to see if these are held at Carlisle or Kendal Archive Centre.

I think Bruce Morrison, whose website disappeared (I have a copy of it, though) relied a lot on wills for his research, and they mention several children whose baprtism records cannot be found.

Can you tell us any more? We seem to have conflicting record.

We have Thomas Ellwood marrying Gwendoline L. Townson (but that could be an error introduced by PAF).

Some have Thomas Ellwood who marriwd the Townson as being the son of Edward Ellwood and Abigail Shepherd, but we have that Thomas as marrying (1) Isabella Dent and (2) Elizabeth Burton.

Thomas Ellwood b.1802 at New Hutton, married Agnes Townsend at New Hutton on 14/11/1825. Had a son Thomas born New Hutton 15/12/31 and died in Washington, Pennsylvania on 16/11/1901.He married Miriam Wilcox on 21/08/1852 T St John the Baptist church in Tunstall, Lancashire. They had 10 children, the first 2 in England and the remainder in Washington.
My Mother was an Ellwood born at New Hutton. Going back 6 generations in my family my Grandfather William Ellwood b.1796 was brother to Thomas Ellwood b.1802 who married Agnes Townsend. My family tree research goes back from them as follows:
Edward Ellwood b.1761 - in Westmorland married Kendal 16/11/1788 to Abigail Shepperd b.1768 in Kendal.
Daniel Ellwood b.1730 - 1779 in Kendal married Kendal 10/06/1758 to Hannah Crewdson b.1733 - 1811 in Kentmere.
Edmund Ellwood b.1700 - in Dufton married Carlisle 14/10/1725 to Elizabeth Robinson b.1700. - 1770in Westmorland.
Edmund Ellwood b.1666 - 1730 in Dufton married ? 01/06/1696 to Ann Rudd b. 1675 in Burton.
Christopher Ellwood b.1631 - 1676 in Dufton married ? About1662 to Jane Gargatt b.1630 - 1676.
Christopher Ellwood b.1598 - 1664 in Dutton married Dufton 17/07/1625 to Bridget Dobson b.1602 - 1662.
Edmund Ellwood b. 1573 - 1657 in Dufton married Dufton in 1595 to Elizabeth Howe b.1576 -.
Edward Ellwood b.1546 - 1590 in Dufton married Dufton in 1563 to Ellen Marsh b. 1544 - 1597.
Leonard Ellwood b. 1526 - 1581 in Willoughby,Lincolnshire married Helen Newton b. 1525 -1580 in Willoughby.
Robert Ellwood b.1501 - 1552 in Westmorland married Kendal 30/04/1521 to Elizabeth Hunter b.1501 - 1548 in Westmorland.
John Ellwood b. 1476 - 1530 in Westmorland married in Cheshire 1498 to Ellen Hyde b.1474 - 1531
In Norbury, Cheshire. (Her great grandfather was Lord John be Hyde 1356 - 1461)
That is as far back that I can get with the Ellwood tree. I hope is is of some help to you.

Hi John,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Thanks for posting your Ellwood line. I too am descended from this family. My mother was an Ellwood from Westmorland.

I see that you have gone back further than Edward Ellwood d1590 Dufton. You have Edward also married to Ellen Marsh and his parents from Lincolnshire. Were did this information come from? Most Ellwood of Dufton researchers go no further back than Edward Ellwood.

Best regards,

Hi All,

According to the marriage cert on Ancestry, Thomas Ellwood married Miriam Wilcock in Tunstall Lancashire 21st Aug 1851. Thomas, address was New Hutton and his father was Thomas Ellwood, a miller. Miriam's address was Leck? and her father was Richard Wilcock a farmer. The witnesses were Edward Ellwood and Elizabeth Robinson.

It was a catholic wedding.

So Thomas was not the son of Edward Ellwood and Abigail Shepherd.

Best regards

Gillian

PS: Just realised that this is the incorrect Thomas! You were referring to his father possibly being Edward!
