Title: Help needed with Great Aunt Norah
Post by: Berni on Saturday 22 February 14 21:48 GMT (UK)
Hi
I really need your thoughts on what I think I  know about my great aunt.
Norah Winifred Dempsey was born in 4th qtr 1903, in Cardiff. Youngest child of William and Emma nee Morgan. The family are living in Seymour street, Cardiff in 1911 (gr grandfather lived at the same address until his death in 1942.)
I have a possible  marriage for Norah to Benjamin H Townsend, in 4th qtr 1930 Fylde Lancashire. 8e 1261. Given that Norah's family lived close to and worked at the docks in Cardiff, it's plausible that she met Benjamin in that way, given Fylde is also on the West coast.  I have 2 possible births connected to the marriage, 2 daughters born 1930/ 40's in South Shields. Norah's sister was married and living in South Shields.
I don't know where Benjamin was born so don't know how to look for a birth for him. Do I treat the 2 births as highly probable, until budget allows to purchase any certs.
I look forward to any thoughts or suggestions you may have, no matter how trivial. Many thanks for taking the time to read this

Found this death:

March qtr 1956
South Shields district    vol 1a, page 1021

Townsend, Benjamin H      age 65

That puts his birth about 1891?

So maybe this birth?

June qtr 1890
Ashton district    vol 8d, page 550

Townsend, Benjamin Hague

Thank you so much KGarrad
Surely this death must be him, and the birth you have found is also highly likely  :D

From LancashireBMD:

Marriage, 1930, at Old Fylde Register Office or Registrar Attended (so perhaps Catholic, Methodist?)

Townsend, Benjamin Haigh    to    Dempsey, Norah Winifred

Thank you again
The census also confirms a connection to Fylde.
Norah was Christened Catholic, so it's likely Benjamin was Methodist? must be a reason they didn't marry in church  :-\

The marriage entry says Registry Office OR Registrar Attended.

That means it wasn't in a C of E church!

Could be register office.
Could be a Catholic Church.
Could be Methodist.
Could be anything that required the attendance of the Registrar!

As Norah was Catholic it is highly likely that the marriage was in the local Catholic Church.

Sorry KGarrad I read the marriage as being in a register office  :-\
Thank you Carol

does this mean Norah remarried someone named Thompson?

I had to look at that twice to make sure I hadn't read it wrong- and it DOES say Thompson, but I can't find her marrying someone or dying with either name actually, unless it's after 2006.

So maybe someone messed up there and typed the wrong name. ::)

Thanks Carol, perhaps it is a typing error.
If they had children (I'm thinking 2 daughters) would they have been  mentioned in Benjamin's will?

Thanks Carol, perhaps it is a typing error.

All I have given you is the probate index,it tells you who probate was granted to,seemingly his wife(widow) You would have to obtain the will itself from York for £6 to see who he left his money to.

Although as he was only 65 and his wife still living he may just have left everything to her and would have no need to mention his daughters.

At least it is a further tool to confirm that Benjamin H Townsend aged 65 who died  March qtr 1956 in South Shields district    vol 1a, page 1021 that KGarrad found for you last night is indeed the right chap as it confirms his middle name and that his wife was Norah Winifred.
