Title: Mary Edwards, born Cefn Mawr circa 1867
Post by: Gadget on Saturday 01 March 14 00:22 GMT (UK)
Hi

I've puzzled about this girl on and off for a few years now. She is shown in the household of  my great great grandmother and my great grandfather on the 1871 census.

1871
Pontyblew, Chirk - RG10/2784/55/25

Mary Parry, wid, 61, washerwoman, b. Oswestry
James, son, unm, 26, collier, b. Chirk
Mary Edwards, boarder, 4, nurse child, b. Cefn

I haven't found any connection to the family and is boarding as a nurse child. Maybe her mother had died and father had asked Mary to look after her - or some such :-\

If anyone can shed some light on the wee girl, I would be grateful.

I have all the  information on my ancestors, it's just mary Edwards that I'm interested in.

Thanks

Just found all this in the Ruabon Registers - not sure how I missed the succession of records  ???

Bapt - May 7th 1867 Mary d/o George & Lidia Edwards, Rhosymedre

Burial - Lydia Edwards - 21 Dec 1867, Rhosymedre. Aged 27

Marriage - George Edwards (23, collier from Newbridge) and Lydia Jarvis (22 from Rhosymedre)   - 31 May 1863
                 Parents - Joseph Edwards, Collier and Simon Jarvis, Quarryman

Now to find what happened to George and Mary.

Though I do have a historic Edwards interest in the Rhosymedre area,the Simon Jarvis is also someone of interest to me.I'm curious largely due to his name of Simon and the fact I believe he was born in Rhosymedre from memory I believe about 1810.

George Edwards isn't showing too readily in Census entries before or after his marriage?

Whilst there are a couple of possible sightings of Mary Edwards as a Servant in 1881,there are almost a succession of "Civil Marriages" for a Mary Edwards in the area from about 1885 onwards.

I've been digging!

So far I've noted ~

Think I've found a possible link - George was born in Chirk, as was his

mother, Sarah. The family are living at Halton (Top Bank) in 1851 -

HO107/1993/800/1

Same place in 1841 - HO107/1399/3/316

Possible marriage - Ruabon 21 October 1839
Joseph Edwards, labourer and Sarah Davies(widow). Abode - Newbridge
Parents - John Edwards, pavier and John Roberts, gardener
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Think Sarah married a David Davies - a son Edward Davies was 9 on the
1841 -
Chirk bpt -
27 MAY 1832 Edward s/o David (labourer) & Sarah Davies, Tenement
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lydia in 1851 - HO107/2503/138/34
Rhosymedre
Simon Jarvis, 33, labourer, b. Ruabon
Mary, 31, b. do
Sarah, 11, b. do
Lydia, 9, b. do
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ruabon marriage 29 July 1838
Simon Jarvis and Mary Williams, banns only at the moment!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ruabon bapt
3 Oct 1841 Lydia d/o Simon, labourer and Mary Jervis, Rhosymedre
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you got anything  on the Jarvis family?
How about this - hot off the press:
Ruabon - Baptism 25 Dec 1816
Thomas Simon Jarvis  (Baseborn) s/o Charles  Lovatt, sadler and Elizabeth Jarvis. Both of Ruabon
It cools my interest in the Simon greatly!I'd have very much been interested in him if his mother was a Jones!I'd agree that the 1816 birth looks highly likely to be the Simon Jarvis showing with Mary in 1851 and 1861.
There's also a Simon with banns in Wrexham/Brymbo in 1838 - that might be yours. I came across him while searching for mine.
The death of a Simon Jarvis in 1868 is  of interest in that it gives a estimated year of birth of 1807.The death of a Thomas Jarvis in 1888 with birthyear of c 1816 probably refers to a Thomas Jarvis who came to live in the area born in Dudley Staffordshire.
Though I have to say that whilst my comments about the death etc of Simon are of only perhaps of academic interest,it gets us nowhere on George and Mary Edwards!
Three possibles for Mary on the 1881:
Mary E, 15, b. Rhosymedre  - in Ruthin
Mary, 14 b. Ruabon - in Vivod
-do- , -do- in Ruabon
Nothing much on George, so far
Will look further later today - off into my garden while the sun is shinning
The showing of the baptism of the Thomas Simon in 1816 may not be relevant.There is this Thomas Simon Lovatt showing in Liverpool in 1851 with mother Elizabeth,both given as born in Ruabon.
George appears to be living with his parents in 1871:
RG10/2784/3/17
Lower Barracks, Halton, Chirk
George, son, widower, 30, coal miner, b. Chirk
Also there are grandchildren of Joseph and Sarah:
George, 8, b. Ruabon
Sarah, 7, b. Ruabon
I wonder if these are George's elder children and Mary was just too too young or the house was full. Lower Barracks houses were quite small, as I remember.
Baptisms, Ruabon ~
27 Jan 1863 George Jarvis s/o Lydia Jarvis of Rhosymedre
10 Sept 1865 Sarah Edwards d/o George (collier) and Lydia of Rhosymedre
This might be George's burial
April 26 1873, Ruabon, by Coroner's order - George Edwards, Rhosymedre, aged 33.
Presume a mining fatality - will check on the mining site.
Just been into my library site -
Full report in Wrexham Advertizer, May 17th 1873
Explosion at The Green Pit on 24th April - inquest held at the Eagles Inn, Rhosymedre -
Deceased: Richard Thomas, 22; George Edwards, 33; Joshua Davies, 34; Griffith Hughes, 35; (fireman); John Jones, 16; Edwaard Williams, 28; peter Darlington, 18, assistant fireman. Others were all given as colliers.
It suggests that George was responsible for boring the hole and it wasn't drilled deep enough so the powder blew out and ignited and they all got burned.
So many mining deaths that I've read about  :'(
Thought that my Ruabon Registers only went to 1837 but now found the later ones, all neatly filed away!
21 August 1838 Simon Jarvis, labourer of Ruabon and Mary Williams of Rhosymedre (servant, minor)
Parents - Thomas Jarvis, stonecutter and John Williams, mason.
Then back a while:
June 12 1803 Thomas Jarvis  and Sarah Jones
No obvious baptism for Simon.
Odd - the early baptisms with parents Thomas and Sarah have Thomas as a shoemaker ???
Well I told you my interest with the Simon Jarvis would be if his mother was a Jones!
