I have been looking for my 2 x gt.grandmother Ann nee CESNAN for quite a few years. Ann married Owen MCLOUGHLIN & by 1849 they were in Chorley, Lancashire where their last child Bridget was born. On all the UK Census except from memory the 1871 all they put was born Ireland (typical) but my gt. grandfather Michael had on one census put Sligo. CESNAN seems to be an uncommon name & a very elusive one - it appeared on Bridget's baptism as being her mother's maiden name but even taking into account the accent I can't work out what is might be instead. Any help will be appreciated.

If you search Griffiths Valuation on the Askaboutireland website you get 3 hits for Cesnan. All three are in County Sligo, townland of Lahanagh, parish St. John:

A Bridget Cesnan appears on Civil Index as marrying in Sligo in 1894.
A Bryan Cesnan of Sligo, as well as appearing in Griffiths Valuation in 1858, also appears a bit earlier, 1852, on the Sligo Prison General Register. He is not a prisoner, but rather the victim of an assault, so his name appears in relation to this.
Wonder if perhaps the surname was a derivative of the French surname Cessna, and perhaps linked to the Huguenots in Ireland.

Sorry folks, I should know better by now that dates are important - my Ann CESNAN was born about 1809 - 1811 & Owen McLOUGHLIN born abt 1811 -1817 depending on which census you look at - he didn't seem to age but taking into account that my gt.grandfather Michael was born 1843/1844 in Ireland y the abt 1817 seems to fit better. Michael was the eldest child.

Given the fact that the only Cesnans showing in GV are in Lahanagh, then it must be worth investigating in that area. Perhaps a post to the Sligo board?

Bridget Boyce was born to James Boyce and Eleanor Cesnan on 3 June 1828 in Kilcooley, Roscommon.

I am doing some detailed research in Lahanagh. I am starting to think that Cesnan became Sexton
,bearing in mind that surnames were mostly spoken and morphed phonetically were written.
Luke Sesnan married Bridget Kelly, had Catherine 1859, Thomas 1860 and Honor 1866.
A Luke Sexton, Lahanagh, appears in Prison Records in 1871, born 1808.
A Thomas Sexton is recorded in the 1901 Census in Slishwood, he is also listed as the owner of hse 15 in Correagh, an adjacent townland. Thomas was married to Mary Fury.
My specific interest is in Fury and K/Gilroy. Bart Fury married Honoria Sesnan in 1877.

Many thanks to JimJGilroy & Hallmark. I have had another look at my info & on the 1851 UK Census my McLoughlin family had a family staying with them & they are down as :-
Bridget ASMAN age 35, Patrick ASMAN 14 & Thomas ASMAN 10. Phonetically to me it would sound a lot like the CESNAN name & even though they are down as Boarders I suspect?? that this Bridget was my Ann's sister. Ann's age is 33 & Owen McLoughlin is 30 & their children were Michael age 12, Peter age 10, Thomas 5, & Hannah age 2. The last child was Bridget born Chorley, Lancashire in 1851. By 1861 the ASMAN? family had disappeared.
