Title: St. Mary's Church, Rickinghall Superior, LILLYSTONE
Post by: cathysm on Monday 24 March 14 19:06 GMT (UK)
I would be grateful if anyone could look up the marriage of my 6x great grandparents, Abel LILLYSTONE and Elizabeth BLOMEFIELD, which I believe took place in Rickinghall Superior on 13th Jan 1766 - I'm hoping that the names of bride or groom's parents may be recorded.

I've been unable to find a baptism for Abel LILLYSTONE, although a Henry Abel LILLYSTONE was baptised in Rickinghall on 14th Feb 1737, son of John and Mary, and I believe this may be the same person.

Thanks,
Cathy.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Unfortunately - marriage entries for that period contain very little really useful info which may help to advance your research.  This is a rough guide to what you can expect.

Fathers names were not shown on marriage entries prior to 1.7.1837 which is the date when Civil Registration was introduced.  Mothers names are never shown on English marriage certs
Occupations were not shown

All you will get will be on the lines of the following - some of which you may already know

Names, date and venue

Spinster/bachelor - or widow/widower
Age = Full (over 21yrs) or Minor (under 21yrs)
Of this parish (OTP) - does not necessarily mean they were both born in that parish - just that they satisfied the short residential qualifying time required to enable them to marry there (approx 3wks)

The name and signature of the person marrying them plus the signatures of the 2 witnesses (occasionally more than 2 witnesses but not usual)

Strangely - there is a burial on 19.1.1766 for an Abel Lillystone at St Mary's Rickinghall Superior but no age shown

Hi, and thank you for your quick and helpful response to my post!

It's a pity that parents' names were not recorded on marriage records of this time - it has become increasingly difficult to find proof of relationships as I've moved back in time with my family tree. However, even the names of witnesses may give a clue.

Thank you for clarifying the situation regarding OTP - I wasn't sure whether the bride and groom had to be born in the parish for this to apply.

The lack of age on the burial record of Abel Lillystone on 19.1.1766 is also frustrating. It seems likely that this person was related in some way to my 6x great-grandfather but without an age, it's difficult to know how. I think that my Abel Lillystone was buried on the same day, in Feb 1789, as his wife, Elizabeth (Blomefield). I believe they were paupers and may have resided in the workhouse, but that's another line of investigation!

Thanks again for your help.

Some baptisms at Rickinghall Superior.

Children of John and Mary Lilliston.

John 4th October 1730
William 8th January 1732
Thomas 1st November 1733

And then written like this:-

Henry  }
Able &  } sons of John and Mary Lillistons baptised 14th February 1737
William }

I don't know if you've seen the original register yourself, but written as they are (above) Henry, Able and William could potentially be three different people as opposed to Henry Able (one person) and William.

And then a couple more children:
William 25th March 1739
Elizabeth 18th August 1741

Thanks so much for all this information, I will take a look at my family tree over the coming days and compare names and dates. I appreciate the time you have taken to look these events up for me in the parish records.
