Hi
"Northlands" which is situated on North Road, Cardiff and is now a residential care home for the Elderly (I think it's Salvation Army run) was once a home for mothers and babies.
I'm not sure if this was the case during 1922, but certainly during the 1950s and 60s it was a home for unmarried mothers. During that time I believe that most of the babies born there were adopted.
I think you should consider the possibility that the reason your grandmother came to Cardiff from Ireland was due to a pregnancy, although as I wrote above I'm by no means certain that Northlands was a mother and baby home in 1922, it may have just been a young person hostel.
Hope this helps
Regards
Caro

I believe that Northlands was a private home in the early 20th century as stories in my family talk of my great grandfather driving a coach from Pembrokeshire to North lands. He was a groom/coachman at the time working for one of the wealthy families in the area(don't know which one yet could be Rind) so the story is quite feasable. In the 50s and early 60s it was a private hospital. My mother was due to give birth to me there but was moved to St Davids as they did not deal with complicated deliveries. She was certainly married at the time.

It was definitely mother and baby (including SA officer baby deliveries) during the 60's.... I was born there ;D Its apparently being renovated at the moment.
