Hi.
Need to view my SS Details...
Do not know where to start...
Taken into care when I was only five...In 1978...
Had a limited access to the files when I was 18....Limited means that I was not Privy to all the Files contained.....
Does this mean that the "SS" will not let me see them???...Is this under the "Data Protection Act"???
What about the "Freedom of Information"???
Surely I can view my SS Records....
Any Help Please...

An acquaintance of mine who was fostered from being a baby, had to use the services of a solicitor to get access to his. He found the dreaded SS kept dragging their heels, making excuses and generally telling him he couldn't see them...but the solicitor sorted it all out. He was unemployed at the time and so was eligible for legal aid. Don't know whether the powers that be have altered eligibility rules since though.

I had a look at Warwickshire council web-site and the nearest contact details I can find are here
https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/fosteringinwarwickshire
It's most probably best to ring them in the first instance and ask how you go about gaining acces to your files now you are an adult.
your files may be somewhere else now.
There's also this link and a form to fill in

This also might help:

Hi Dawnsh.
Contacted the Local Authority and there does seem to be a Requst Form to fill in....Said they would post me one...
All I want to do is to find out about my Parents..Nothing else..Do not want Case details about my time in care, if you get what I mean..Wish to forget that part of my life...

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :)

Hi Brenda, I just wanted to wish you luck in obtaining your records, I followed the Percival Norman Thorn thread with interest. It will help you to make sense of what happened in your early years and allow you to move on.
Best wishes

Will do. Who knows what might turn up...
Would like to get to the bottom of this and, if I learn anything that might be useful to anyone else, I`ll share all I get with any Rootschat Member who are having the same problems as me....

Hello Brenda. Having helped you on your other thread, I certainly hope that you are now able to get some answers. Have you seen this, it seems pretty clear that the authorities have to give you access. The only problem I can see is that your records may no longer exist. http://www.careleavers.com/component/docman/doc_download/23-guide-to-accessing-records

Hi Groom.
Thanks for the help on my other Thread...Related to what I wish to find out Information on my SS Files.
It is nice to know that the "Aurthorities" now HAVE to give you access to your files....But you say
that the Records may no longer exist??? I find that totally unacceptable..How can they do that???

Groom has just told me that my Records may no longer be available !!!!
Not read the link yet but it sounds ominous....

Hi Groom
Meant to say to "My Files"...Sorry

Brenda I wish you luck in your quest to see your records.
I know someone who obtained their adoption records and because he already had some knowledge realised his mother had told Social Services nothing but lies about who his father was. So be prepared for something like this to happen.

Hi Jaywit
Thanks for the warning>>I am prepared for anything that the "SS" has for me...
They can put me in chains, torture me, but I will still not give in until I get the TRUTH.!!!!
I think that being taken into care was because of something that happened in the Family, between my mum and dad, which was not appropriate...See my other Posting...Percival Norman Thorn and this may give you some insight into the situation...

Hi all.
Today I received a letter from the Warwickshire County Council regarding my request to see my SS Files...
Heading..."1998 Data Protection Act;Data Subject Access"
Enclosed with the letter was a Subject Access Request Form which I have to fill in and return ....
I need to give them as much Information as I can remember about my time in care and then return it to them...
7 days to process...Then they decide if I can see my Records, if they are still there !!!!
Anyway, seems that I am now getting somewhere....
What worries me now is that I may not see ALL Records !!!...I wonder why????
Filling the form in now and will post it tomorrow and see what transpires....
Let you all know what transpires....
Brenda

P.S.
If I wish to see any associated Records, ie. details relating to my brothers and sisters then I have to obtain written permission from them to do so....Sounds reasonable...
Just Posting this extra bit of Information for anyone else wishing to get Information about their time in care.
Hope it helps ..

Sounds hopeful, Brenda - fingers crossed.
What worries me now is that I may not see ALL Records !!!...I wonder why?
It might be worth contacting somewhere like the Citizens' Advice Bureau to ask if they can tell you under what circumstances Social Services can refuse to let you see all your records. I suppose the problem could be if you and your siblings were taken into care together as obviously anything in your records would be the same as in theirs.

Hi Groom....
Cannot recall what happened when we were taken into care..I was only 5 years of age...
All I know is that we were all separated and sent to different Foster Parents....
The early years of my care are very vague,,,Having trouble trying to complete the form...
How am I supposed to tell them my 1st Foster Parents name and where they lived??? I was only 5 .
Later years are a little a little bit better to recall.
Anyway, I`m going to complete my form and send it in and see what happens...
Brenda.
