This site is brilliant for anyone with research in either of the two villages.
Census Returns 1841-1881 Wheatley Hill, and 1851-1881 Ludworth

This mainly covers the Elvet area of Durham, but I'll check for any names on request.

I have the booklet for these and am willing to search it for you.  However, details are scant; it only lists names, age, status and birthplace - there is no detail as to the vessel upon which the person is serving. At the start of the booklet it says ...

"The complete census contains the names of 29,600 but the following have been extracted for the counties of Yorkshire and Durham. There were 125 vessels, ranging from a sloop carrying 23 men to a troop carrier with 1,570 men aboard, anywhere from the English Channel to Australia, via North and South America, China, India and the Mediterranean."

For a look up request please start a new topic in the CENSUS and RESOURCE LOOKUP REQUEST board for this county and begin with the words “1881 Royal Navy look-up:” where I'll pick them up as soon as possible. However, SOMETIMES  I don't get notified of new topics on the boards; in such cases, give me a day or two's grace and then you can pm me to put me on the scent!
