Title: Is this Masonic dress?
Post by: Hephzibah on Friday 04 July 14 10:18 BST (UK)
This is a photo of an unknown family member.
In order to try and identify which 'line' (Baker or Pendal) Please could someone tell me what all the regalia means.
I'm especially interested in which Lodge he may have belonged. It says Sancroft Lodge 6106 on his apron but according to the Masonic history site Sancroft Lodge is 4347...and what are the initials W.P. are they his initials?
The photo is a picture postcard and there is no writing on the back except for postcard/British made/ and Correspondence/ address.
I'd appreciate any help which can be given.
Thank you.

Hephzibah
Really sorry about quality, it kept saying file was too large and I couldn't work out what to do!!

Certainly Masonic  - could the WPstand for Provincial Warden perhaps. The decorations on the left are Masonic "jewels" issued on a Lodge's formation or some anniversary perhaps. He may have belonged to more than one Lodge. The medals on the left are First World War, " Pip squeak & Wilfred"

Sorry to say that the regalia isn't Masonic, and I believe it and the lodge are more likely to belong to the Ancient Order of the Buffaloes.

There are several threads on here about them and what the initials mean, but I can't remember the links at the moment.

Michael.

I notice that you have a few names in your profile that are linked to Durham ... you could explore these to get more detail.

At a lodge’s foundation it is given a unique number, which are issued in succession.
Sancroft Lodge, Penshaw, Durham 4347, in 1921, Motspur Lodge, Stoneleigh, Surrey, 6106 in 1945.

Masonic jewels/medals are never worn on the right hand side of a jacket, and extremely rarely on a collar. The bottom jewel in the 'V' of the collar in the second photo looks very like a Buffalo's head, and I feel that is the organisition to which this gentleman belongs and where your research should get results.

Best wishes, Michael.

Thank you to all who have taken time to respond to my query.
I am following up Michael J's suggestion that it may be the Buffalos and have contacted the secretary of the local branch to see if they can be of any help.

What a wonderful lot you all are!

Stan's link is without doubt depicting a freemason's lodge.
Particularly the tessalated pavement that every freemason's lodge has.

Thanks Joboy.
This picture is from my Suffolk side.
Several Freemasons on the Durham side but this photo is very very unlikely to be from this side of the family.
Still awaiting response from AOB.

I've had contact with a local member of the Buffalos and he has confirmed that the man is dressed in 'minor lodge regalia' indicating he is a 'worthy primo' which means he is chairman of the lodge for a month. (?)
Haven't yet identified the Lodge but it is likely to be in Suffolk. (lots of records lost in a fire in the 1930s)
Thanks for all help received.

Thanks Philip. I've since found out that Sancroft Lodge 6105 met at the Cardinal's Hat, The Thorofare, Harleston, Norfolk. This would tie in with family who lived in the Stradbroke area.
My contact within the Ipswich RAOB does not think there will be any records because of the fire so it may be I'll not be able to identify the individual......yet!
Thanks,
Hephzibah
