Hello,
When my great grandfather was over here in Cheshire from former Yugoslavia he met a woman, Emily. Once his wife died in former Yugoslavia, he came back and married Emily in 1953, and his children followed him after to Cheshire.
I've tried to find out the maiden name of Emily, however I can't find it out. My grandfather and his brothers don't know/can't remember her maiden name. I looked on many sites but can't find it out.
This is because when you look at the marriage it always comes up with Emily's surname as BERAN.
It sounds as if she changed her name before they married to look respectable, because BERAN is a extremely uncommon name in England and so her name would not already be BERAN.
As well as this, I believe she was married before before my great grandfather, but no one can remember who it was.
I don't know how to find out her maiden name before, and your help would be appreciated,
-
So you are looking at the Emily Beran - Anton Beran Marriage? (sept 1953)
There are Beran names in England prior to that so it's not impossible for her to have wed a Beran before. Did they have any kids together?
did she bring any kids into the marriage?
-
It looks as if Anton Beran was in England in 1911?
Born Bohemia? Is this the same person?
No it's not!
Death: March qtr 2001
South Cheshire district Register: B5B, District: 3411B, Entry: 299
Beran, Anthony Date of Birth: 29th May 1913
Did Emily have any other family?
Brothers? Sisters? Children?
Emily's death:
August 2006
South Cheshire district Register: D22B, District: 341/1D, Entry: 299
Beran, Emily Date of Birth: 11th September 1916

this is the form to request the marriage cert from 1953
Emily Beran to Anton Beran - Crewe Civil Marriage
you will notice to the right of both names it states - ANY OTHER SURNAME USED BEFORE THIS MARRIAGE
this box is blank ...which leads me to believe that Emily was a Beran and hadn`t been married before ?
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/pma.cgi?date=1953&county=cheshire&reference=CC%3ACR%2F23%2F162&file=B&pos=41038&surname=BERAN&forename=Anton&area=CC
have you checked on www.freebmd.org.uk for a Beran to Emily 1953 backwards ?
ADDED....there are no marriages for a Beran to an Emily on freebmd ...so it looks like she was a Beran ...freebmd 1964 onwards has a few Beran births in Crewe ( where Emily married ) could these children belong to Emilys brother ?.. can`t see them being children of Emily / Anton because in 1964 they would be 51 and 48 ??...no Beran children in Crewe from 1953 -1963
-
Emily and Anton didn't have any children together, however Anton already had 3 children from his first wife. The births from 1964 onwards is my grandfather's and both my great uncle's children - grandfather's brothers.
Unfortunaly I didn't know if Emily had any brothers or sisters.
Thank you,
-
If the births you mention are those in Crewe, their mother's maiden name is Bailey/Bayley!
FreeBMD again ;D
-
The children's births mentioned is my mother and uncles, the mothers maiden name is BAYLEY because that it my grandmother's maiden name.
I don't know if you understand.
Anton was born in Yugoslavia/Germany/Austria - not sure - and married a woman called Cecilija. They had 3 children together - one of whom is my grandfather. Anton was taken as a prisoner of war to England where he met Emily. His wife died in 1953 in Yugoslavia with the 3 children. He married Emily the same year, and his child came to England soon after.
Emily and Anton had no children together.
Anton's 3 children all have families, and all of the Beran's found in the Crewe/Nantwich area are all part of my family.

Hi, Reece, I cannot find a birth in the period 1915 to 1917 for an Emily Beran. This then leads me to believe that maybe she wasn't born a Beran. Also, I cannot find a marriage between a male Beran and an Emily in the period 1926 to 1953 other than the one of Emily and Anton.
I agree wholeheartedly with Garstonite on this one. The only way to find out if Beran was an assumed name of Emily, or she had changed her name by deed pole, or had previously been married to a Beran (the later seems unlikely), you really do need a copy of the marriage certificate of Emily and Anton. You hopefully will be able to see who is named as Emily's father. Witness names might also give you some help. Please let us all know on here what you find.

Hello
Do you know what year Emily was born?
When was Anton born?
Was Emily older or younger than Anton?
Heather
-
When did Emily die?
-
2006 - see my reply #3! ;D
-
Emily was born 11 September 1916, Anton was born 29th May 1913. Therefore Anton was older than her, and by the time they were married Anton was 40 and Emily was 37.
-
Not the reply your looking for
Anton BERAN was Naturalised living at Hope Street Crewe
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/40857/page/4722/data.htm
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C12189503
By Obtaining the 1953 marriage certificate, you will find
a) the address each party was living at, if Emily has a different address , searching the electoral roll should give an indication of a surname
b) if Emily had another surname it should be recorded together with her status ( my mother's is)
You do not state where in Cheshire Anton was!
My mother was a Crewe Girl, went into the Land Army based at Aldersley & Burtonwood, met a GI married him, divorced him & married a Gresty lad..... mother was born 1920 so not far off Emily's age....
Emily could have adopted the surname BERAN when the family lived together for respectability purposes........

Could Anton have told a little white lie and been German and not Yugoslavian /Austrian ?
I have found a Beran familytree from Bukovice,Germany 1829- 1920
http://en.geneanet.org/search/?page_size=20&ressource=arbre&vplist%5Bname%5D=&name=beran&nbindi=&country=®ion=&subregion=&place=&annee_debut=1910&annee_fin=1920&source=&sub_frm53cbdafc2e0c4.x=14&sub_frm53cbdafc2e0c4.y=8&ajax_ok=1
Anton Beran is the 1832 born earliest in the tree
http://gw.geneanet.org/sberan?lang=en&v=BERAN&m=N
do any of Antons children to his first wife match any in that tree ?
-
Great find Elzabels. This now establishes Anton's original nationality. There were two main prisoner of war camps in the Crewe area for German soldiers. Crewe Hall housed German Officers and Snape Farm Weston housed other ranks. It is possible that this is how Emily met Anton. There were also other POW camps at Dorfold Hall, Nantwich and in the grounds of the Boars Head, Walgherton. Not to be ruled out in surrounding areas is the Racecourse Camp at Tarporley and Marbury Hall at Marbury, Northwich. Also in Cheshire there were POW camps at Dunham Park, Altrincham and Madeley Tile Works on the Cheshire, Staffordshire Border. On the Wirral there was a camp at Parkgate and one at Ledsham Hall, Sutton.
I am not sure if there are any records for POW's which would show a possible match with a camp for Anton. Someone on Rootschat might be able to help.

As the OP knows the dob of Emily i.e q3 1916 he could ask GRO if there is any way of tracing her with this info.
Ot to get a list of all Emily b q3 1916 Crewe or CHeshire and tick them off until one fits!!!
Still think the purchase of the marriage cert is the next move! www.gro.gov.uk
I do not think she was necessarily born/ registered in Crewe and the options of the camps open up a girl born in say Birkenhead!

so if it is Emily WARD 11/9/1913 she may have been registered Dec qtr??
Quote -On the Wirral there was a camp at Parkgate
I wonder if this is her
Emily E Ward - Birkenhead - mothers maiden name Renshaw - dec qtr 1913
if this is the right lady she had brothers and sisters born up to 1928 in Birkenhead - wouldn't it be nice if any were still alive :)
well done Ray :)

Hi
I am a little confused?
Mr Beran was born 1913 ?
Emily (Ward/Beran) born 11 Sept 1916 ( not 1913 ) according to '39 ?
seems to point to
Birth 1916 Dec Nantwich 8a 474 Emily Tatler ( mmn Tatler )
1939 has Emily Tatler marrying Fredk Ward
1948 sees Fredk passing
1953 sees Emily marry Anton
'39 Register has Eleanor Tatler (mother?) living with Fredk and Emily
Emily (Ward) surname crossed thru and substituted with her later (1953) Beran surname?
( as per the continuing use of the register )
I don't see why 1913 is being used for Emily,
or am I wrong? ???
Cheers
Ray

Eleanor R Tatler ( b 26 Jan(?June?) 1894 )
Could be Eleanor Rebecca Tatler dau of
William (1873) & Rebecca B (1872)
Sister of Thomas (1896) , Emily (1898) , James (1900)
There is a marriage 1893 Dec Hardingstone 3b 91
William Tatler and Rebecca Bonham Hall
1901 shows Stephen Walker (1895/6) as a "cousin"
