Miss Alice Elizabeth Wronsky from South Africa was living in Swansea in 1925.
She was aka Wronsley . Any help appreciated . Im assisting a lady from Pretoria
Additional info not included in post
She was in England in 1915 - aged 23 occ Typist and returned to Capetown in April 1926
At that time she was a teacher aged 34 and passenger list shows her address as Glanmor House - Sketty - Swansea which may possibly have been a school or a private house if she was a private tutor
She must have returned to England after 1926 as there is an outgoing passenger list in 1934 back to Capetown - no English address shown
Exactly what type of info are you looking for as it is very doubtful there would be any records of her employment between 1915-1926 and ?? return date and 1934

Thanks for the help . As you might say she was well traveled. But she gave an address as Glanmor House Sketty, Swansea on one of her travel documents. I have split the enquiry into two parts one the person and what happened to her in her life and two the building Im not sure but I have a hunch it may turn out to be a teacher training centre.
I have also started another third thread looking at her life in the 1950's when I am informed by the lady in Pretoria that Alice returned to Wales as a Nun ! and then her name was Sister Alice Benjamin.
I am aware of her stay in Radnorshire during WW1. Other than that I know no more but help is arriving fast !!!! The enquiry I had originally had very little information apart from her birth in South Africa in 1892 and that she became a nun in much later life. So it is the Swansea part of her life first as a target.

Glanmor House was situated on Glanmor Road/Glanmor Park Road. It was owned by a Mr Edward Thomas and later by Iltyd Thomas - it housed Craig y Nos Preparatory School between 1923 - 1940 and after this date became Glanmor Club. The site is now flats. :)

You already have her address in 1926 and her occupation.
Between 1926-1934 she must have returned to England - what date did she return and what was her address at that time?
She then returned to SA in 1934 occ teacher - so what date did she return to England after 1934 and what was her address on the passenger list?
It would suggest she entered the convent after 1934 and probably in SA before coming back to England as you say she "returned as a nun"
By 1934 she was 42yrs old so was a "late" entrant so have you checked any convent records in SA where she may have taken her vows?
In which convent did she serve in Wales?
Did she die in Wales or in SA?

James Price Lloyd, the son of Rev.James Hughes Lloyd, was a schoolteacher at Glanmor House.
His father, the Rev. J H Lloyd died there in 1924.

Hello,
It is confusing with the threads as information often overlaps.
What religious denomination was Alice?
I see from elsewhere on the internet that the convent is 'undecipherable'. I wonder what means exactly. Indecipherable to whom? Is the obituary of her mother available?
The piece also states that she 'may have joined the Academy'. Has that been followed up?
Regards
Heywood
-
That info would suggest the school was C of E rather than RC
-
Info and requests for info is now being posted on the other threads so there is a risk of duplicated efforts. It would appear that the welsh address was a school and some info suggests it was not RC
I think guidance is needed from the moderator as to whether the 3 threads should be merged
-
I have just looked back at that family tree and the convent address was in Alice's mother's obituary. Mother died 1904.
-
Many Many Thanks all of you especially WexDor and despair you've come up with the goods.
Cheers and Thanks
-
If her mother died in 1904 - Alice was then only 12yrs old.
-
No it is not confusing it is straightforward . The threads are as I have put it earlier are
1. Early Life- slowly but surely being resolved by some great help by some fantastic Rootschatters
2. Building - Now resolved thank to some excellent help.
3. Later life - as a nun This is more difficult as she now has a different name and I have been given very little to go on . Heywood You have found an earlier enquiry from the same source placed elsewhere . The lady contacted me directly as I am based close to Swansea.
It is better that these items are dealt with separately as they do not overlap and cover three topics even if it involves one individual .
Finally I am very grateful for all the help that I am being given
Thank You

Carole
I have asked the Lady in Pretoria to let me have a copy of the obituary as I have not seen/found it.
If you have please can you post It
Regards and Thanks

Just to clarify. I have not found an earlier enquiry. It is from information in a published tree.
-
I did not post the info re obit so have no access to it
-
Thank you Heywood for that. Much appreciated. To clarify this lady has used a number of online resources to get information. She has her trees on with a couple of providers. She also placed enquiries over the last couple of years . I assumed wrongly that you had come across one of these posts.
-
Thank you for that Carole. I once again wrongly assumed that you had gained access to the obituary.
As I mentioned earlier I have requested this information from the Lady and I am waiting to see it . But as Heywood rightly put it the comment was that the name of the convent was indecipherable on the obit , so I guess we shall have to wait and see. Anyway thank you for your help. I'm now off out clubbing with a dozen or so friends...so can't stop goodnight
-
If the obit mentions Alice being in a convent in Wales it does not tie in with her being born in 1892 and her mother dying in 1904. We know she was definitely not in a convent in 1934 so I wonder whether the obit is referring to a completely different Alice
-
A very good point Carole. I think looking at it so far the young girl Jean died about 1939 and it looks like Alice was caring for her up to her death ....well maybe. So as an assumption Alice may not have become a nun until sometime say about 1944 to 1950 !
-
The Alice on the passenger lists was b 1892. By 1944 she was in her 50's and my gut feeling is that this is not the same Alice who was in a convent
I think you need to look for a death for Alice b 1892 in SA or England. She returned to SA as unmarried aged 42 in 1934 so it's not impossible she may have married. If no death found under her maiden name, you may need to look for a marriage
-
I think I have missed something here - are you looking for her death?
Is the death as a nun in a convent in Wales?
As I said earlier,I saw a reference to 'the Academy' and a signed photo.
Is it established that the photo is of Alice?
I looked up the academy - is it St Dominic's? Has your lady enquired there?
I only have experience of RC nuns and the name doesn't sound right to me. Most nuns would, at that time, be Sister Mary ..... with a saint's name. Some may take the full name of a saint - first and second. Nowadays a sister could be called by her own name.
None of this seems to apply to Alice. I would think that a death registration of a nun would be in the person's family name.
Apologies for the length of this but I am unsure what you are searching. I just thought you were looking at the various establishments named with regard to her travels.
For example, when she visits a place with Jean, I thought perhaps Jean may be at school and Alice her carer/governess, rather than a teacher in an establishment.

Again, maybe I am way off track but I thought she may be at school in Wales.

Another query ::)
Was there an obituary for her brother, William Henry Wronsley?
I just found one but it was in a medical journal but only mentions a widow and sons.
There may have been a longer one in a local paper perhaps.
-
Hi Heywood
Replies 3 & 4 are the relevant ones. There is a suggestion that Alice the teacher born 1892 was teaching in Wales then returned to SA in 1934 but sometime from 1934 onwards she became a nun called Sister Benjamin. She is said to have returned to Wales as a nun in the 1950's.
Apparently the obit for her mother in 1904 mentions the Welsh convent but Alice was only 12yrs old so I can't see how it can refer to Alice b 1892 and wonder if her mother had a sister who was a nun hence the reference in the obit.
I can't find Alice b 1892 on any incoming passenger list after 1934 hence my suggestions re: looking for her death/marriage in SA
-
First let me say Thank you both for your contributions.
There are two travel mentions 1 in 1937 travel to SA with young Jean.
and again in 1938 as above.
Both mention the address of Milton Abbey,Near Blandford Forum,Dorset.

What Denise the Lady in South Africa originally asked was for any information regarding Alice.
One second I just got a message I shall paste it
Here it is
Hi Mike,
No. Little Jean was born with Multiple Sclerosis. Her father, William Henry, asked his sister, Alice, to come to SA from Wales to help take care of Jean. Alice devoted herself to the little girl and took care of her until Jean died at the age of 13. Alice was engaged to be married before all this back home in Wales but her fiancé passed away. She remained a spinster all her life.
Jean was born 08 Feb 1926
And died 1939 in South Africa.
The assumption I made that she was a nun is based on the photo I have and the fact that her address was given as the undecipherable name of a convent somewhere in Wales. I would love to know more about her – where she is buried and so on. She studied at Rhodes university in Grahamstown South Africa but have not as yet been able to establish what she studied – teaching, presumably. Her brother was KIA in WW1 as you correctly stated. See attached.
Thank you for all your help.

Yes I saw that and his details are on CWGC site with parents names.
In 1915, Alice travels as a typist. Of course this is during WW 1.
On a later sailing, her forwarding address is in Hampstead. That was the home of two sisters, Schroder - lived in London but born in SA.
I wonder if she married a Mr Benjamin- I know it says she was a spinster but someone may have noted the photo with a married name.
It doesn't say, 'Sister Alice Elizabeth' does it - in scrawly writing :)

Thanks Heywood .I'll ask

Can anyone please tell me how I stop people interfering with the topics I have posted. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED with what has happened here and I have reported what I believe to be interference to the moderator.
I am now going out to a nice restaurant to have dinner with friends .

Duplicated topics were merged together as this was confusing duplication and confusion.

You have been previously advised that duplicate posts cause confusion and waste members time duplicating info and I recall you responded with a less than polite reply to the poster at that time.
There is nothing more frustrating for members than spending their time and efforts looking for info and then finding there is another thread elsewhere with all the same details on it.
Your reaction to the moderators decision to merge your current 3 posts does you no favours whatsoever

I want to thank all those who have contributed to this thread . Please now consider it complete and closed.
