Title: Little girl lost.
Post by: Tasman1 on Wednesday 20 August 14 13:40 BST (UK)
Hi.
Alexander Aitkenhead married Margaret Christie Todd in Blantyre, on 01/03/1881. The Census of 1881 in Blantyre, shows a Lizzie, daur aged 1, born Blantyre. I have been unable to find a birth in Blantyre or indeed Lanarkshire, all districts, except two with the wrong father and mother. Searched 1879-1881, forenames starting with E and L. Any ideas? Thank you.

Have you tried under the mothers surname?

She could be under B for Betty/Betsy or have a different first name and Lizzie is a middle or pet name  :)

   True enough, Tasman,
There is an Elizabeth Todd born at Blantyre in 1880.     Maybe it is her.     Outside chance, but it could be.

Now why didn't I think of that! Another learning step.
Elizabeth Todd, born 13/03/1880 at Barnhill, Blantyre, Illegitimate. Mother Margaret Todd.
Barnhill is Margaret's address when she married Alexander on 01/03/1881.
Many thanks. Tasman.

Elizabeth Todd Aitkenhead, born Barnhill, Blantyre on 13 March 1880. Birth before parents' marriage and registered as Todd. Known as Lizzie. Married Alexander Cameron Smith and died in Largs on 27 April 1956.

Thanks Forfarian.    I actually knew her!!
In those days it was a long trip from Greenock to Largs, but when we did go, we always dropped in to see Uncle Alec and Aunty Lizzie.
Funny how one thing leads to another. This reminded me that I have a sixteen foot Greenhart salmon rod with a brass reel, inherited from my father, who was give it by Uncle Todd who died in the Boer War. So one line ends and another opens!

Did Uncle Alec and Aunty Lizzie have any family?

I am not sure as I was too young and I have not gone down that path yet on S.P.

Nor have I - they married in 1913 so any children are in that 'black hole' between the 1911 census and the introduction of mothers' names in the births indexes about 1928. And the surname being Smith makes it extremely difficult to find them all.

Alec registered Lizzie's death, and her nephew Alexander Aitkenhead in Inverkip registered Alec's death. I am not sure which Alexander this was - there seem to have been quite a lot of them.

Alexander (Slater Sandy)(Inverkip Sandy) was married to Nan who was a nursing sister in Gateside Infectious Disease Hospital in Greenock. I recall that they had at least one child.
I grew up hearing of Slater/Brickie/Electric/Sandy, to distinguish which Alexander they were referring to. Sorry, nothing else to mind at the moment
