Title: Please could anyone ID this cemetary in Ayr
Post by: Tom 23 on Friday 22 August 14 12:09 BST (UK)
Hi

The large gravestone in the centre of the photo is my GGG Grandfathers and I would really like to know what cemetery he is buried in.

I believe this would be in Ayr as that is where he died in 1876.

Thank you.

It could be Ayr Cemetery itself which was opened in the 1860's - its located at Holmston Road in Ayr.

Problem is the houses crowding in make it look as if it nearer the centre of the town

I would prefer a graveyard next to a church,
like this:

Probably the old kirkyard round the Auld Kirk in the middle of Ayr. Could probably be pinpointed using an online satellite map.

Wallacetown Graveyard or Newton Green Graveyard are both options .... both old graveyards and both were once in very congested areas which have since been partially cleared.

Wallacetown is off of modern Russell Street and Newton Green is near Weir Road

Most likely the Auld Kirk. the family lived in High Street, Ayr.

That also looks like the Auld Kirk, that Rudolf, highlighted.

Jonn.

Thank you Jonn,

I am not the expert here.

But, there is a larger house in the background (right) of the photo and this might be in High Street.
(or in an other street of the city).

Regards
Rudolf

Hi Tom,
I was walking the dog through the Auld Kirk churchyard this afternoon. Like the others I thought that this was the obvious choice. But I'm afraid there was no evidence of your monument. It is a small churchyard and any monuments of this size are noticeable. There were a few but none of them yours.
I think Ayr Cemetery would have been a bit too rural when it was opened to have had any such buildings surrounding it.

Hi again.
Just ignore my previous post. I was certain the Auld Kirk was the correct churchyard,so I returned this evening and found your monument. It has changed in that it no longer has the urn on top.
I took some photos but I suspect they may be too big to send. So you can send me your e mail and I will send them.

I would say it is the Auld Church Graveyard. The buildings look like the ones in the high street though they have changed a bit over the years. I am not back down in Ayr till next week but will take a wee visit in to have a look
