I am currently trying to research my great grandmother, Mary Lizzie Housley but can find very little info on her. So far I have her birth in Mansfield uk in 1891. A marriage to a David Oldbury in 1919. and her death certificate in 1964 Sheffield. David Oldbury was not my great grandfather. She was with my great grandfather after this although they never married. I have no idea what happened to David and I can find no census info on Mary at all. I know her father was called walter and think her mother was Mary. If anyone can help it would be very grateful. Ive been stuck on this for months!!
Kindest Regards
Sally

Hi
Welcome to rootschat :)
Her birth certificate would confirm her parents names including her mothers maiden name

I see her birth reg is Mary Lizzie but her marriage reg is Mary E

Morning Rosie and Su, Thankyou for the welcome.
That's it su! I also think I may have found the 1911. She is listed as Lizza and the age only 12 which is 8 years out. But the entry seems to have a few errors and scribbles on it! I would appreciate a second opinion on this if anyone has the time.

On the census there is a David Oldbury at Nottingham suggested birth c 1894 - freeBMD shows a birth registration Dec Q 1893 Nottingham. You will probably need to await the 1921 census as by then they are a couple and if living in England and Wales to find where they were residing. Just a possibility trace him on the 1911 census to see if he had a trade or occupation e.g. seaman or alternatively get a copy of the marriage certificate as his occupation may prove to be of use.
If you purchase a copy of Mary's birth certificate it will confirm the names of her parents.
As David does not seem to appear on freeBMD as a death he may have died outside of England and Wales.
-
I don't think she is with the family in 1911 - "Lizzie" age 12 is more than likely Eliza E age 2 in 1901
Mary Lizzie would probably be working away from home
The other thing which puzzles me is they had 9 childen and 2 died - on census it looks like Jane is crossed through -so she may have died but there are still 7 children listed -ages of older ones match with 1901 details
What name is Mary Lizzie's death registered in ?

There is a death here
David Oldbury 74 yrs born abt 1894- September 1968, Basford, Notts
Heywood

it seems Jane Housley age 8 in 1901 didn't die -she is visiting Grandparents in 1911 -possibly that is why she was crossed through on census -as she usually lived with her parents but was absent census night

As a side note, Walter HOUSLEY doesn't appear to have been transcribed in the FreeBMD for their marriage. Only Mary CLARKE is appearing.

Hi all,
Thanks hsfam that 1891 census definitely looks correct but I still cant pull it up on ancestry for some reason.
I do have the marriage certificate for Mary and David and he is listed as occupation miner. I am unsure wether he died, they divorced or she just ran away to Sheffield with great granddad.
I also have her death certificate where she is named as Mary Elizabeth Bostock. Although family says they were never actually married.

Yes hsfam. I found that also, I just knew this side off the family would be trouble ::)

Walter appears on marriage reg on FindMyPast
still can't find Mary in 1911 tho

Hi Sally,
I'm not surprised you haven't found it on A. The writing is truly awful so probably a transcription error. You may need to jiggle things a bit to find them. I found the return on [FindMyPast] but I don't have a sub for A so can't do a cross check. The Clarke name is fairly legible so maybe try under their names.
Yeah, that's where I found it, Suz.
-
Thank you I will look for it on FindMyPast
-
On A******y the Clarke family are transcribed as "Clarks" and Walter Housley is transcribed as "Walker Handy"
Suz
-
Hi suz, Yes just found it on FindMyPast and then looked up the folio piece numbers and got it. I would never have found them under walker handy!
sal :)

Oops. Sorry, should have passed on the Folio numbers. I had to rush off after my last post as my little son had just called out. Its night here and he's been sick. Anyway, just thought of it now but see that you have it all sorted! I'm off to bed. Good luck with the rest of your hunt!

Hi all, I shall continue to search for her in the 1911 census. But I wanted to say a big THANKYOU to you all for taking your time to help me.
Kindest regards
Sally

I thought I had her in 1911 - as a barmaid in Nottingham - but then noticed that Mary was b Ireland
Suz
-
Hi yes I saw that too and got all excited as word has it she worked as a barmaid when she came to Sheffield! Another question if you don't mind? When looking for her burial would you search housley/oldbury or Bostock?
Thanks in advance sal

Just in case David is son of David Oldbury, there is a death certificate for David the elder 7th June 1947, formerly a coal miner, in military records. On another set, family as Sarah, sons Edward and David, Pink Street, Radford

Thanks wilsy, I didn't have the baptism. So that's another thing checked off my list :-)
