Title: Harold Donald Iles
Post by: dougaltopman on Tuesday 09 September 14 16:10 BST (UK)
Afternoon

Looking for some background information if anyone has it on Harold Donald Iles

He was born Harold Donald McLean in St Georges, London, Middlesex in Oct 1895 out of wedlock to Margaret Jane McLean (b 1873 in Dyke, Nairnshire, d 1873 in Auldearn, Nairnshire). When Margaret married Frederick William Iles in 1898, Harold's surname was changed to Iles.
In the 1901 Census he was at 20 Bath Street, Oxford, as a scholar.
The family moved to Auldearn between 1905 and 1908.
He enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders 2nd Battalion but was killed on the 6th of May 1915 at Flanders by the effects of a chlorine gas attack. He is buried in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery (Nord France).

If anyone has any information regarding
* when and why the family moved from Oxfordshire to Nairnshire
* what he did before enlisted
* or anything else regarding Harold or his family
I would appreciate the information.

Many thanks in advance
D

Have you had a look for the family in the 1911 census for Scotland? Harold would possibly have left school by then. You will need to search for them on the ScotlandsPeople site.
