Title: Ballast Hills Burial Ground Look up
Post by: SelDen on Saturday 11 October 14 08:14 BST (UK)
Hi

Would be grateful if someone with access to the records for the Ballast Hills Burial Ground could provide any details for the burial of William & Allison/Alice Halbert.

This site mentions that they are buried there, but does not give details:
http://www.tynesidesilentcities.com/page_ballasthills_burialground.htm

This request relates to the following thread on the Durham board:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=666035.msg5449506

As the look up request specifically relates to Newcastle upon Tyne, I have put it here - hope that is ok with the board moderator.

I have an index of Ballast Hills burials 1792-1801 and an addendum to the burial books for earlier years.

A few Halberts:

Sarah Halbert buried 12 Nov 1795, no address or age.

Pre Jul 2 1792:

Elizabeth, daur of William and Allison Halbert, died July 27 1771, aged 5 years; George, son of the above died Dec 10 1773, aged 18 months; Joseph, son of the above died Oct 4 1776, in infancy; Robert, son of the above, died March 30 1786, aged 4 years and 5 months; Jane, daur of the above died June 3 1789, aged 20 months; Anna, daur of the above died Nov 14 1789, aged 5 years

Thank you Janis for your assistance. The thread Selden has mentioned is mine. My mysterious Halbert family from Newcastle upon Tyne.

On the webpage about the cemetery it mentions that William and Alison are also buried there. Do you know the date for Allison? William died in 1804.

Is the Sarah one of William and Allisons children?

Ill keep looking for the Thomas Halbert that eludes us.

Sorry the death records only go to 1801.  No other information on the Sarah just the date of burial.  Tyne and Wear Archives probably have the records for that cemetery but I am a few thousand miles away and have to go by the fiche record I have.

I am starting a project at Ballast Hills - https://blogs.ncl.ac.uk/ballast-hills/. We hope to get more information about the place and people buried there. We hope to create a life register of those buried or memorialised there.

Hello

That would be useful, I had to pay several fees for several searches of Burials at the Ballast Hills Dissenters Burial Ground held at Tyne and Wear Archives, to find the Hood surnames buried there 1811 to May 1836.

I presume you are aware there is a photograph in the newspaper of when the Headstones were still in place, before the Memorials were moved?

Some Nonconformist M.I., were also noted in 1817, example at Reply # 542.

See below from Chadwick J & Dodds E (1904) Inscriptions in Ballast Hills Burial Ground, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1904. Page 83. I cannot do this for everyone, but thought I would see what came up for Hood.

Our Life Register is just getting started so will not be avaiiable for a while; Tyne and Wear Archive is one of our project partners. We are running a public surevy about burial spaces, which has a section on Ballast Hills Burial Ground - please complete it and share with other. It is available at:  https://forms.office.com/e/chAsrYZEYx - it will be open until 21 September 2024.
