Can anybody find a marriage for Rebecca Cotterill and John Swain between 1859 and 1870. Probably Shrewsbury. Many Thanks.
-
Do you have them on a census?
And how do you know Rebecca's maiden name was Cotterill?
Not seeing an obvious marriage? :-\
-
I can't see one either.
Do you have a birth for one of the children naming that as her maiden name?
If you could give us a bit more info on them it might help :)

Hi all, just finishing shift so cannot really assist at present, but first child was John Richard Swain b 1860 Wolverhampton, Rebecca b c 1840/2 Chirbury
1861 ref RG09/1989/37/28
EDIT if the maiden name of Rebecca was not from one of the children's birth certificates then can see you possibly located her in 1851 b c 1839 as being the only Rebecca in Chirbury.
Census ref HO107/2498/256/14

Hi everyone . I have now found her, and John Swain dies in Chester 1878, Rebecca is indexed on the 1881 census as living in Chester and also indexed as a widow.
What I can't find now is a marriage for them.

So John Richard Swain b wolverhampton
and
Thomas William bapt in 1863 at Shrewsbury, Holy Trinity
Mary Elizabeth bapt in 1865 at Chirbury, Shropshire, England
William Henry bapt in 1867 at Chirbury, Shropshire, England
All to John & Rebecca Swain, John is a Shoe maker.
They are in 1871 C for wales in Worthen, Montgomeryshire, (along with Frances b 1870)
this the correct family?

Hello Many, many thanks for the response Yes! I believe this is the family.
do you have a marriage for them?

No, but they are in Wolverhampton for 1861 census, which is interesting
It means we have
John is born in Montgomeryshire and goes to wolverhampton where his first son is born in 1860 (did they marry in wolverhampton - was wolverhampton a big shoe maker area?) and still there in 1861
They then move to Coleham, shrewsbury and have 3 month old Thomas William bapt in 1863
Then go to marton in Chirbury, where his wife Rebecca originates from, and have two more children
Before moving to Brockton, Montgomeryshire and having their 4th child Frances in 1870 and there in 1871

Hi Ken, purchase of any of the children's birth certificates would provide a maiden name?!!

I will ask the question again: How do you know her maiden name? ???
-
Hi
With regard to Rebecca's maiden name it is information that has been passed down through the family but there is speculation that they never did marry. The various census's show she was indexed as a wife.
Ancestry family trees also show that Rebecca Cotterell's spouse was John Swain.
We know she came from Shropshire and near to the Welsh borders and we also know that he came from Montgomeryshire.
BUT there does not seem to be a marriage.

Unless the Ancestry trees have documentary proof of her maiden name, it's probably best to ignore them?! ;D
Once an error gets into 1 tree, it gets copied ad infinitum across many trees!
Essentially, you know her name was Rebecca, but there is no positive proof of her maiden name?
