Wondering if someone can prod me in finding marriage and death for Mary Jane DICKSON.
Mary Jane DICKSON was born in 1865 Dunedin New Zealand to William and Mary Dickson.
Mary Jane was the 2nd daughter for this family.
The family moved about 1868 to the gold fields of Buller, being at Brighton and Charleston where more children were born.
I have looked and looked but must be missing something when researching.
Help appreciated.
Thank you.

Maybe list all her parents children and then search for them all in paperspast
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast
If one of her siblings has a more unusual name or spouse surname, you might find other surnames connected with Mary Jane Dickson. Then you can cross-reference

Hi Rainy
Was the mother named Mary, nee O'FARRELL ?
There are online trees for William DICKSON / Mary O'FARRELL naming their children, and whilst Mary Jane (b. 1865) is named, there's no other info than her year of birth.
Have you got more information on this family (especially what became of Mary Jane's siblings) ? This might assist us in finding Mary Jane.

Hi Rainy
I noticed some of the online trees stated that Mary O'FARRELL's husband was William Stewart DICKSON (although that second name doesn't appear to have been used when registering the births of their children in NZ.) Marriage was apparently in 1861 in Australia.
Also a daughter (older than Mary Jane), Elizabeth DICKSON (b. 1862), married a Michael O'SULLIVAN.
The following obituary, for a Mrs Mary DICKSON who died at Patea, Taranaki, in 1923, may be the mother of Mary Jane DICKSON ?
If that is the case, it states that four daughters and four sons survived her.
[That accounts then for the 8 children born to a Mary and William DICKSON who appear on the NZ Birth Index. Of the daughters there were Elizabeth (1862) / Mary Jane (1865) / Cecilia (1878) and Caroline (1890) ... so if the obit is correct, then Mary Jane was still alive in 1923. ]

Thank you 'whiteout7' and 'Lucy2 for your replies.
Lucy2 you are correct with William Stewart DICKSON and Mary O'FARRELL being the parents of this family.
Yes they married in 1862 in Victoria Australia and arrived before Elizabeth was born August 1862.
Mary O'Farrell according to the marriage info was born in Scariff, Co Clare. Ireland.
William Stewart DICKSON was born 1829 C. Tyrone Ireland.
Elizabeth DICKSON b. 1862 Dunedin NZ m. Michael O'Sullivan.d.1936 bur. Patea.
Elizabeth's headstone was the clue to where she was born as it was on there.
Mary Jane DICKSON b.1865 bap.1865 Dunedin
Teresa Agnes Dickson b.1864 Dunedin m. 1886 Walter Scott WELLS d.1933 bur. Patea
William Stewart DICKSON b.1868 Brighton/Charleston NZ m. 1893. d. 1952 bur Te Puke NZ
Thomas Paul DICKSON b.1869 Charleston NZ m. 1898 d. 1941 bur 1941 Northland NZ
John DICKSON b. 1871 Charleston m. 1904 Westport NZ d. 1945 Westport. NZ
James DICKSON b. 1872 Charleston NZ didn't marry: d. 1950 bur Te Puke.
Basil Hall DICKSON b. 1874 only other info I have is from paperspast and Electoral Roll nothing after 1908
Cecilia b. 1878 Charleston NZ m. 1912 d. 1955 Wanganui.
Yes that is Mary Dickson who died at Patea. William Stewart DICKSON d.1896 Westport.
Now not sure if Caroline fits in this family.
I have very recently found Thomas through the WW1 service information.
So it is Mary Jane DICKSON and Basil Hall DICKSON who I am now trying to find.
Basil Hall Dickson named after a uncle in Co.Tyrone.
Thank you for giving me 16 June 1923 Hawera and Normanby Times. will check that again. Thank you.
John DICKSON is my husbands grandfather.
I have asked bdm re Basil Hall Dickson but they just said to look under other names which I have, but so far have not found him.
Thank you both for you advice and help.
Much appreciated.

Mary Jane DICKSON was born in 1865 Dunedin New Zealand to William and Mary Dickson.
Mary Jane was the 2nd daughter for this family.
Hi rainy
Mmm ... I'm not sure either whether Caroline DICKSON (b. 1890) belonged to this family.
However, you'd mentioned earlier that Mary Jane (1865) was the 2nd daughter and now you've confirmed Teresa (1864) and Elizabeth (1862) are older ??
[I was working from the NZ BDM online Birth registrations and couldn't see one for Teresa ?? so I assumed that Caroline was perhaps the 4th daughter. There was also a Caroline DICKSON, spinster, on West Coast electoral rolls for a number of years, but seemingly not connected to this family ? ]
* Do you have the 1923 death printout for Mary DICKSON (mother) ? It should have the ages and sexes of the children who survived her. [Have to say that sometimes the newspaper obituaries don't always get these things correct. ]
Yes, can see now that Teresa WELLS is buried in an adjacent plot to Mary DICKSON (mother) at Patea.
It's possible that Mary Jane DICKSON may have married but simply used the name, "Mary".
I'll check further for you.

Hi Lu thank you for checking for me.
As I have said have looked but must be missing something.
Possibly staring at me. Can happen.
Yes I should say Mary Jane is the 3rd daughter after checking again last night.
With the way bdm has been transferred onto their site, you will find quite a few mistakes.
Which if correct on microfiche they will correct.
That's why you missed Teresa. I think if I remember rightly was under Terisa Dixon.
I know I also missed her birth reg also for quite some time, but had got Baptism's from Dunedin.
Yes there are other DICKSON families on the Coast, that aren't connected.
yes have printout for Mary DICKSON it isn't east to read, but have included it for you to read.
Also thank you as so easy to make mistakes and you have already helped me.
I also have found death certificates are only as good as the person knows the info.
I have a marriage and death certificates for someone, with two different sets of parents.
Yes she could have just used Mary and have tried working out ages re this.
I feel I am just missing something.
Appreciate your help.
Thank you.

Hello...
Do you also have the 1896 death certificate for William Stewart DICKSON.
And, if so, are you able to upload it.

Hello...
Thanks for that :-)
I was just wanting to know the "Living Issue" details on Wiliam's 1896 death certificate. Mainly because as I read it only two of the three daughters mentioned on Mary's 1923 death certificate might be Mary Jane. The 60 year old and the 56 year old. I'm assuming the 60 year old is Elizabeth O'SULLIVAN. If Teresa WELLS née Terisa DIXON is the other daughter then Mary Jane must have died before 1923.
Either that or the informant (and the obituary) got the details wrong.
---
Who is the 38 year old daughter. Can't see an obvious candidate on BDM NZ

Thanks Beg for checking for me.
I think the youngest daughter Cecilia born 1878 Charleston, perhaps informant made a mistake writing down information.
Or who gave information just guessed????
Why didn't I pick up on that. But then newspaper notice says 4 sons and 4 daughters living.
I am going to get that death certificate just need to find out what bdm need to change it.
As I wanted correct spelling for it. Didn't want to buy two certs for William Dickson.
The other daughters all died after their mother.
Thanks Beg.
Appreciate your help.

Hi again...
There's two sides to correcting historical spelling mistakes. I had the same situation with one of my lot having her surname misspelled. Nothing major (an "a" instead of an "i") but when I enquired about correcting it I was told that that was how it was written in the Register.
The procedure for getting the DIA to amend the Register was explained to me but I thought "Who am I" to go around changing an historical document. When the family came out from Ireland some of them seem to have replaced a "gg" with a single "g" in their surname so should I go around correcting all of their Register entries too.
I ended up choosing to leave everything as it was and just spread the family tree, with notes about the spelling, to as many of the next generation as I could. Hopefully they'll pass it on.
Having said that, your man has some serious spelling mistakes so I understand that you want to fix them.

Hi Beg.
I agree who are we to change data.
But then I thought of those that are to come and have had no connection with this era.
I was fortunate and knew my husbands grandmother Dickson.
But I have put it off and I really do need to attend to it.
Then I will buy certificate for him.
Fortunate in being able to see Church and undertakers records for William Stewart DICKSON.
One of the other families named started with 'S' and it was 'L', which they did change for me.
I think Basil Hall DICKSON was under Dickison and they changed that for me.
Just wish I could find Basil Hall DICKSON's death.
But who knows it may pop up one day.
Thanks for your advice and help.
rainy
Have done some transcribing and writing not always east to read.
But they didn't manually transcribe 'bdm records'

Hi Rainy,
Just wondering if you'd made any progress in your search.
I notice that while Mary Dickson's 1923 death notice in the Hawera and Normanby Star lists eight surviving children, her death certificate lists only seven.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01eub/
I agree with Beg Clonrode's comments above in Reply #9, and wonder that since neither of the ages of the two eldest surviving female children are a close match, whether Mary Jane DICKSON might have died in infancy (as also her brother Basil) or was stillborn.
There may not have been a death certificate issued in either case. This would explain why both seem to have disappeared.
Perhaps you should search for burials in Otago for these children.

Spades

Hi Spados.
Thanks for the nudge will attend to it and see if I can change that name on bdm.nz
I have had changes to names before but they said needed proof, wonder if headstone and marriage cert will be proof enough. That is for William Stewart Dickson.
Basil Hall Dickson I have followed to about 1908. He is on some ER's. Not on bdm death's when I have looked and did try other spellings. But of course could still miss it.
Got to wondering whether he went out of the country. Last time I found him was on paperspast I think in Waihi.
I have baptism for Mary Jane Dickson in Dunedin. But have not looked for a death for her as a infant or small child before they came to the West Coast. Will check that out. Will be between 1864 and 1868, Need to check bdm again as well.
Appreciate your advice and help.
Many thanks.
